Solution To Refraction Problem

The document presents a solution to a refraction problem using Snell's Law. It calculates the refractive index of a second medium when a ray of light passes from air into that medium at given angles of incidence and refraction. The final result shows that the refractive index is sqrt(2).

Solution to the Refraction Problem

A ray of light is incident on an interface separating two media at an angle of incidence equal to 45°
for which the angle of refraction is 30°. The refractive index of the second medium with respect to
the first is to be found.

Using Snell's Law:

n1 * sin(i) = n2 * sin(r)
Given that n1 = 1 (air), i = 45°, r = 30°:
sin 45° = n2 * sin 30°
Substituting values:
(sqrt(2) / 2) = n2 * (1 / 2)
Solving for n2:
n2 = (sqrt(2) / 2) / (1 / 2)
n2 = sqrt(2)
Thus, the refractive index of the second medium is sqrt(2).

Correct Answer: (d) sqrt(2)
