GROUP 2 – Noli Me Tangere Reaction Paper

The novel Noli Me Tangere by Dr. José Rizal is a powerful depiction of the social
injustices and abuses in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. One scene that stood
out to us was the confrontation between Crisostomo Ibarra and Padre Damaso. This scene
highlights the oppression of the Filipinos under the Spanish friars, as well as the struggles of the
educated class to fight against corruption and injustice.

The tension in the scene reflects the deep resentment and anger that many Filipinos felt
towards the abusive clergy. Padre Damaso’s arrogance and Ibarra’s restrained fury demonstrate
the conflict between blind authority and reason. This moment resonates with us because it
emphasizes the need for courage and wisdom in confronting oppression. Ibarra, representing
the educated and reformist sector, stands in stark contrast to the domineering and authoritarian
