1. Highlight the nature of reading by
identifying what and when to read.
Answer.
The nature of reading can be analyzed from 2 different
aspects. They include ‘What to read’ and ‘When to read’. The
manner at which individuals usually read is determined
majorly by what they are reading. Newspapers, magazines,
textbooks are some of the materials commonly read. While
reading newspapers or magazines , people may just skim
through the write up once and do away with it, but this is not
sane with a textbook. Scrutiny is highly observed when
reading textbooks and they are repeatedly read for better
understanding. The concept when to read
can also dictate the nature of reading. Using the examples
earlier stated, newspapers and magazines can be read at
anytime of the day and anywhere. The environment and how
serene may not [Link] the other hand, while reading a
textbook a period when the environment is peaceful,
organized and calm is more appreciated and fosters
understanding.

2. Mention and explain some methods of reading
Answers.
The methods of reading are techniques employed by readers
to enable them understand the material they are reading.
These methods include:
1) The SQ3R Technique.
2) The PQRST Technique.
3) The 3S3R and OK4R Techniques.
The SQ3R Technique.
The acronym SQ3R means, S for Survey, Q for Question,
3Rs for Read, Recite and Review. The Survey (S) involves the
process of examining the tables of content of the book, the
short introductory passage regularly referred to as the
preface. The reader is expected to examine the title of the
book also and if need be topic sentences of the various
paragraphs that make up chapters or [Link] is done to
ensure the article or book about to be read is of relevance to
the reader concerning his or her search.
The next stage is the questioning stage. In this stage, the
reader is expected to ask himself questions that will serve as
a guide during the entire reading process. The 3Rs (Read,
Recall/ Recite, Review) are then carried out after the
questioning stage. In the Read stage the reader is expected to
carefully read through the text or topic for proper
understanding of main ideas and also sought for answers to
questions asked earlier. Clarity and understanding are the
top most priority at this stage. Note taking is also a key
characteristic of this stage. The Recall/Recite stage is right
after the Read stage. In this stage the reader makes die
efforts to remember what has been read. He or she should
repeatedly try to say what they have read in their own words
from memory. Finally the Review stage. It involves revising
what have been done so far and also making necessary
correction.
The PQRST Technique.
The acronym stands for: P-Preview; Q-Question; R-Read;
S-Summary and T-Test. The first stage Preview is a stage
where you examine the topic and heading in the course
outline. The question stage is right after the Preview stage. It
involves asking relevant questions that will help you boost
your understanding about the material you are [Link]’s a
very important stage as it offers guidance while reading the
text. The R in the acronym meaning ‘Read’ is a stage where
you carefully read the material understanding it’s content.
Next up is the ‘Summary’. Here you take a short note of what
the entire material is talking about while taking into
consideration details used in the material. Finally is the Test
stage. In this stage you assess yourself by trying to provide
answers to the questions earlier asked by you
3S3R Techniques and OK4R Technique.
The 3S include Survey,Study and Speech. While the 3R
stands for Recite Reflect and Recollect. This technique helps
boost understanding of the article. The OK4R stand for
Overview, Key point, Read, Recall, Reflect and Review.

Discuss what is required to read, retain and remember what
you have
Answers
The memory is the major unit that enable individuals
remember, retain and recall what they have read. There are
basically three types of memory. They include:
1. Sensory Memory Temporary storage of sensory
information from the senses.
2. Short-term Memory -Brief storage of information, where
relevant points are selected and irrelevant ones filtered out.
3. *Long-term Memory-Permanent storage of information,
with limitless capacity.
To enable individuals recall effectively all they have read
some techniques are employed they include: Paraphrasing.
This involves recalling information in your own
[Link] Reciting verbatim. This includes recalling
exact words or phrases, useful for memorizing lines or
foreign. Information storage is also done by the memory and
it involve stages. The first stage of information storage is
Encoding. This include reading, organizing, and internalizing
information.
The second stage is storage. Here the reader retains

stored information, aided by attention, repetition, recitation,
and review.
