Question 4

Derive, from first principles, an expression for the ultimate bending moment capacity, Mu, of
a rectangular reinforced concrete beam, of width b and effective depth d as shown in Figure 4.
The expression should be in terms of b, d, the concrete characteristic compressive strength f´c,
the steel yield strength fsy and reinforcement area in tension Ast.

Question 5

An overhanging beam shown in Figure 5 is supporting load from a slab and a brick wall
above it. The beam is made of a uniform concrete section of 250 mm wide (b) × 500 mm
deep (D) with d = 425 mm. The concrete used has fc = 25 MPa and the flexural
reinforcement is N20 and the shear reinforcement is N12 closed ties.

a) Using an appropriate load combination calculate the design load for the beam taking
into consideration the beam selfweight.
(2 marks)

b) Find the reactions at A and B and draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams.
Identify the design positive and negative moments, and design shear force.
(5 marks)
c) Determine the positive and negative flexural reinforcement required to resist the
design positive and negative moments. Consider additional requirements for minimum
reinforcement and crack control.
(10 marks)

d) Check the adequacy of beam in shear and if required design the shear reinforcement to
resist the design shear force.
(6 marks)
e) Draw cross sections of the beam at support B and at mid span between A and B
showing the flexural and shear reinforcements.

Question 6

The column section shown in Figure 6 is reinforced with four N32 bars and is made of
concrete with fc = 25 MPa.
a) Calculate the pure axial design compression capacity Nuo

b) Calculate Nu and Mu for unstressed state of tensile steel
(6 marks)
c) Calculate Nub and Mub for balanced failure state
(10 marks)
d) Calculate the pure design bending moment capacity Muo

e) Would the column be able to safely carry a design load N*=2700kN applied at point A
as shown in Figure 6. Demonstrate your answer using the interaction diagram for this
column.
