CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

LGBT, an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender,is known as a

minor sixual orientation group.LGBT can also be used as an ambrella term for referring

to a certain gender and sexual identity topics. At first this miner group was called

homosexual in the 1660s.However, it was replaced to represent all of the queer gender

and sexual identity. In the past LGBT already existed, but people were very strict to

LGBT.One example of how strict and harsh people to a homosexual individual is an

Sodomy Case by Rechard Cornish in 1625.He was reported on changes of sodomizing

a male ship steward and was sentenced to hang (Cropton,2020).

There have been many issues and cases about the acceptance of LGBT issues in

society, such as hate speech, discrimination, and negative attitudes towards LGBT

individuals. The negative treatment makes the minor individuals hard to express

themselves in society and causes them to experience mental health problems and

difficulties in accepting themselves as they are. In the 1920s, The Society for Human

Rights was formed by Henry Gerber in Chicago as the first formal organization in the

United States that support gay rights (Elliot 2016).

In the Philippines, rising incidences of harassment directed at Filipinos who identify

as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) are part and parcel of

the systemic prejudice and discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation,

gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). In the absence of a national anti-

discrimination legislation, the burden to confront SOGIE-based harassment (SBH)

rests upon the LGBTQI+ community and their allies.

The Philippines does not legally recognize same-sex unions, either in the form of

marriage or civil unions. The Family Code of the Philippines defines only recognizes

marriages between "a man and a woman". The Constitution itself does not mention the

legality of same-sex unions.(Louis Emmanuel A Abesamis,2024).

Students have been daily targets of bullies because of their perceived sexuality

(Swearer, et al (2008). In many cases, the bullying of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,

Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) students has happened at school. According to

the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN),which surveyed students in

2014, 74% of LGBTQ students have been verbally harassed in school due to their

sexual orientation and 55% because of their gender expression. Due to the feelings of

being unsafe or uncomfortable, 30% .percent of these students missed at least one day

of school within the past month (GLSEN, 2014). Bullying too often results in dire

consequences. Sometimes the bullying of LGBTQ students can leadthem to commit

suicide. The results of a study conducted by (Duong and Bradshaw 2014) the effect of

the bullying to the academic performance of lgbt members in New Alimodian High

School History of LGBTQ+ in the Philippines is One of the more memorable moments

in the history of the LGBT movement in the Philippines was the first LGBT Pride March

on June 26, 1994 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot. The

march was not only the first gay pride march in the Philippines, but in Asia. This event

was organized by the Progressive Organization of Gays in the Philippines (PROGAY

Philippines) and the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) Manila. The march was

small in number, with 60 participants in fact. As they marched from EDSA at Quezon
Avenue to Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City, it was the first time for the public to

see members of the LGBT community speak out for equality at such a scale.

More recently, the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) released

the LGBT Non-discrimination Policy Resolutionin October 2011. This was in response to

overwhelming letters, calls, and ethics complaints against a certified psychologist who

recommended conversion therapy for children who come out as gay or lesbian to

achieve a “happy family life”. This policy statement affirmed the inherent dignity and

equality of LGBT individuals as well as the right to not be discriminated against based

on their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. This resolution also

reinforced the American Psychiatric Association’s position in 1973 viewing same-gender

sexual orientations as healthy, non-disordered variant of human sexuality, love, and

relationships. The resolution was later translated to Tagalog in November, 2014

Social patterns in bullying show consistent gender differences in adolescent

perpetration and victimization with large cross-national variations. Previous research

shows associations between societal gender inequality and gender differences in some

violent behaviors in adolescents. Therefore, there is a need to go beyond individual

associations and use a more social ecological perspective when examining gender

differences in bullying behaviors (Alina Cosma Ph.D, 2019).

place, set of norms, culture, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may

share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area or in virtual space through

communication platforms.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Bullying

Bullying influences both the individual and the perpetrator and may lead to present

and long-term effects (Aleem, 2016).Bullying and peer victimization always have either

direct or indirect effects on the victims and may result in poor academic performance

(Holt, et al (2007).

According to Nishina, et al (2005), school harassment, peer victimization, and

bullying have contributed to a decline in classroom activities and school engagement,

which tend to impact academic performance and achievement negativelyBullying is a

social problem, and one person in every three individualsrandomly selected has been

bullied physically, verbally, and socially (Misawa, 2010).

The Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10627) is a crucial piece of

legislation in the Philippines that aims to protect students from bullying, particularly in

schools. This law mandates the establishment of anti-bullying policies in both public and

private elementary and secondary schools, making it compulsory for these institutions to

take an active role in preventing and addressing bullying incidents.

to be used in the study.

Research Design

This study will use descriptive correlation method to find out the effects of bullying

to LGBTQ members in New Alimodian High School and to determined the academic

performance of LGBTQ members and to identify the relationship of the effect of

bullying to the academic performance of LGBTQ members in New Alimodian High

School.
