Week 5

This week we're focused on NGOs. For this discussion, please complete the three parts
described below:

1. Each student should present a description (in your own words) of an individual
nongovernmental organizations (NGO's) mission and capabilities.

2. Describe the NGO and its capabilities in your own words (paraphrase and cite). Don't cut
and paste something from the NGO website. Obviously, you'll want to pick an NGO that is
involved in issues related to the course. Be sure to use more than one source and incorporate
references to course material. Please be sure to paraphrase and cite the information rather
than quoting it.

3. Your summary should indicate why your NGO should be considered as a friend, foe, or
foil. Some NGOs play important roles in conflict resolution. Some NGOs stir up conflict.
They also play important roles during the economic, social, and governmental aspects of
peace settlements--the kind of problems that often cause negotiated settlements to fall apart
and conflicts to reemerge.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello class,
The NGO of my choice is the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI). The
USCRIs mission is to assist individuals who have voluntarily, or forcibly, been migrated
across the world and help them transition to a new life; they provide legal, health, and
housing services across the U.S., El Salvador, Honduras, Kenya, and Mexico. (“Who We Are
- U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants” 2024)
Started in 1911, USCRI has been at the forefront of ensuring asylum seekers and refugees are
properly homed and has vocally stood against bills and resolutions that would be antithetical
to America's core values of migrants and those seeking sanctuary from turbulent countries,
with recent activity from late last year regarding negotiations surrounding a proposed budget
cut that would have rendered critical aid to asylum seekers short. (“USCRI Calls on Congress
to Prioritize Human Rights Amidst Budgetary Negotiations” 2023)
It is for all these reasons that I consider the USCRI a friendly NGO that furthers human rights
and seeks to protect the vulnerable from dangerous environments where war, poverty, and
severe societal upheaval are taking place. The war in Gaza or Ukraine are perfect examples of
where the USCRI has come into place to ensure that families fleeing from those countries or
who were displaced manage to find refuge in their centers until they can be relocated to more
permanent homes.
