Problem Solving For Refraction and Reflection

The document outlines five problems related to refraction and reflection, utilizing principles such as Snell's Law and the Law of Reflection. It includes calculations for angles of refraction, conditions for total internal reflection, apparent depth of objects in water, and image distances in mirrors. Problem solving for refraction and reflection 5 points each. Do It in a ½ crosswise.

1. A light ray traveling through the air (refractive index n1=1.00) enters a glass block (refractive index n2=1.50) at an
angle of incidence of 30∘. Find the angle of refraction inside the glass.

Using Snell’s Law:

n1 sin θ1= n2 sin θ2

2. A diver underwater (refractive index of water n=1.33) shines a laser beam at an angle of incidence of 50∘ towards
the water surface. Will the laser beam escape into the air (n=1.00) or undergo total internal reflection?

Solution:

Total internal reflection occurs if the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, which is given by:

θc=sin−1(n2/n1)

3. A coin is placed at the bottom of a swimming pool filled with water. The actual depth of the pool is 2.0 m. Find
the apparent depth of the coin as seen from directly above. (Refractive index of water = 1.33, and refractive index of
air = 1.00).

Solution:

The apparent depth d′ is related to the real depth d by the formula:

d′=d/n

4. A light ray strikes a plane mirror at an angle of 40° with respect to the mirror surface. What is the angle of
reflection with respect to the normal?

Solution:

According to the Law of Reflection:

Angle of incidence=Angle of reflection

θr= θi

5. A person stands 2 meters in front of a plane mirror. How far is their image from them?

Solution:

In a plane mirror, the image appears behind the mirror at the same distance as the object in front of it.

Image Distance=Object Distance=2 m
