Abstract

This paper presents an RFID-based smart shopping trolley designed to enhance the shopping experience by reducing checkout times and improving efficiency. The trolley uses an 8052 microcontroller and RFID technology to identify items and display their total cost on an LCD screen. Customers can complete their purchase by sending the total amount to a central billing system via a ZIGBEE module.

Abstract

Wireless technology has led to the development of electronic commerce to such an extent that
convenience and efficiency in trade has been achieved to a level. In this paper, I discuss the
concept of RFID based smart shopping trolley. The current shopping experience in shopping
malls is average in terms of efficiency and time required to do the shopping. This is because of
long checkout queues. The primary goal of this project is to provide a technology oriented, cost
effective, time saving and comfortable shopping experience for the customers. In the project, an
8052 microcontroller is attached to an RFID reader. As the customer drops items in the trolley,
the reader on the trolley reads the tag and sends a signal to the controller. The microcontroller
then compares it with product ID. If it matches it shows the name of item on LCD and also the
total amount of the items. The customer then presses complete button on the trolley and the
trolley sends the total amount on shopping items to the CBS via ZIGBEE module.
