SERVICES PROVIDED ARE:

CNC TURNING CENTRE AND VMC

Company Provide CNC precision machining service for metal & plastic part
manufacturing to numerous industries. CNC turning centers are advanced computer numerically
controlled machines. They can have 3, 4, or even 5 axes, along with a multitude of cutting
capabilities, including milling, drilling, tapping, and of course, turning. CNC machining centers
describe a wide range of machine tools including CNC milling and drilling machines, which
include vertical machining centers (VMC), horizontal machining centers (HMC) as well as 4th
and 5th axis machines.
Vertical Machining Centers, also known as Vertical Milling Machines, create holes in flat
parts. The VMC technology is favored when three-axis work is done on a single face, such as in-
mold and die works.

Figure 3.2

BENEFITS OF PRECISION CNC TURNING SERVICES:

The technology investments and expertise in precision CNC turning services have made
one of the leading CNC turning components manufacturers. The following benefits of services
are well-appreciated by clients across industries.
Dimensional Precision and Stability: The products manufactured through CNC turning assure
high dimensional precision and stability as dimensional deformation is negligible in the CNC
turning process.
Quick-Turn CNC Machining: Owing to the availability of state-of-the-art equipment and
skilled operators, which are capable of offering voluminous CNC turning parts production in a
limited duration
Complex Part Production Capabilities: intensive knowledge and experience with advanced
design software and accomplished CNC turning skills allow us to perform complex part
production easily.
Secondary Services: We also provide secondary services like CNC threading, drilling, tapping,
and turning etc, which makes them a one-stop destination for all their CNC machining needs.

LATHS AND DRILLING MACHINES:

They provide CNC lath works and manufacturing of drilling machines to other industries.
A CNC lathe is operated with precise design instructions to machine parts to precise
specifications. A CNC lathe is a machine tool where the material or part is held in place and
rotated by the main spindle as the cutting tool that works on the material is mounted and moved
on various axes whereas, CNC drilling is a machining process that utilizes a rotating cutting tool
to produce round holes in a stationary workpiece. The holes are typically made to accommodate
machine screws or bolts for assembly purposes.

6
A simple CNC lathe operates on two axes with the cutting tool in a fixed position at 8 to
24 station turret. The rotating action of the workpiece is called "turning." This is why certain
types of CNC lathes are called CNC Turning Machines. CNC lathes produce precise round
shapes with an outer diameter (OD) and an inner diameter (ID). Many different kinds of
structures can be machined with this machine tool, depending on their various industries' needs.

Modern CNC lathe machines usually come with tools that could work on multiple axes.
Different types of machines can include both X and Y-axis, incorporate a second turret with
other tools, or include a second spindle. This means a CNC lathe can perform additional milling,
drilling, and tapping operations, resulting in a complete and even complex part manufacturing
process and eliminating the need to transfer the part to another machine for a second operation.

Types of CNC Lathes

CNC lathes are classified into types by how many axes they have. They are available
with different axes, allowing more complex parts to be produced without manually switching
machines or tools. The different axes affect how the machined part or the tool can be positioned,
rotated, and approached during the machining process.

2- Axis CNC Lathe

This basic CNC lathe machine has two linear axes that can perform outer diameter/inner
diameter, basically cylindrical machining, and facing operations, or drilling and tapping at the
center of the part. It has an X and Z axis and does not allow for milling.

3- Axis CNC Lathe

With a 3-axis CNC lathe, a C axis and life tool system are added, allowing the part to be
positioned so that standard milling operations, boring, and tapping operations can be performed..

4-Axis CNC Lathe

A 4-axis machine has an added Y-axis so that off-center machining operations can be
performed. The fourth axis works well for more irregular and complex lathework.

5- Axis CNC Lathe

 In 5-axis lathes, a second turret is added to a 3-axis CNC lathe. Such machines would then
have two axes at each upper and lower turret plus the C-axis on the rotating spindle. This

7
enables the use of two tools at the same time on the part, which drastically increases
machining speed.

6- Or More Axis CNC Lathe

 With more than five axes, the permutation may include the following: two C-axes with a
primary and second spindle; two turrets, with an upper and lower turret, each with two
linear axes; one Y-axis at the upper turret; and a second spindle that can move towards
the main spindle to pick up the part. There are even machines with more than eight axes

6 or more axis CNC lathe

Figure 3.3

Applications of CNC lathes

 The material being worked by a CNC lathe machine is slowly sheared away. The result is
a precisely finished product or an intricate part. Because these machines are so versatile,
many industries use them, including automotive, electronics, aerospace, firearm
manufacturing, sporting, and others.
 Some examples of items a CNC lathe machine can make include baseball bats,
camshafts, bowls, crankshafts, cue sticks, sign boards, musical instruments, and table and chair
legs.

Considerations

A CNC lathe must be used with care. Although the process is automated, an operator
must understand computer programming parameters, safety standards, and other vital
information. With the lathe's focus on detail, a qualified professional must run the machine.
Manufacturing processes are made easier due to the automation, which consists of complex
commands and speed rate instructed by an internal computer, but a human operator must still
oversee the overall process. This means that special training to develop the necessary skills is
essential.
8
MANUFACTURING OF DRILLING MACHINES

 CNC drilling is a machining process involving rotating cutting tools for producing round holes in
a stationary workpiece. The purposes of drilling are aesthetic ones or for further accommodating
of screws and bolts.
 CNC drill can be described as the following. Spindles securing the chucks, drill bits, and other
movable parts of a machine are activated by an operator through the control panel. Then,
following the CAD/CAM file, a drill adjusts speed, fed rate, and the position of its spindles while
cutting holes of appropriate depths and diameters.
 After the machining is over, parts manufactured are checked for compliance, and adjustments are
made, if necessary. Sometimes the manual change of tools in spindles is required if the pre-
installed, in a tool changer, drill bits are not enough for all the types of holes needed in the
design.

Advantages of CNC Drilling

 Speaking about the respective advantages of CNC drilling, the referential models to compare
with may be manual (traditional) drilling. The list below also incorporates the distinctive
benefits of CNC drilling.
 High accuracy and precision. CNC technology-based drills can reproduce the original designs
with very tight margins.
 Versatility. Drilling is considered a frequently needed operation, which can be applied to
various materials from metal to foams. A variety of holes types is ensured with multiple drill
bits existing.
 Less percentage of sub-quality products. Correctly pre-adjusted CNC mills are less prone to
errors, which leads to consistency and uniformity while producing large-scale orders.

CNC drilling
Figure 3.4

9
Types of CNC Drilling Machines:

Upright drill press. It has a geared drive spindle head and is designed for machining heavy,
large parts. It can be either CNC or manual type, requiring an operator to feed workpiece. It is
known for feeding a workpiece to a cutting tool instead of vice versa.
Radial arm drill press. This type of CNC drilling machine incorporates the basic mechanism of
positioning a movable spindle over a stationary workpiece. The wheel head gives a cutting tool
enough versatility to perform numerous operations on parts presented with most sizes and forms.
Gang drilling machine. This press has several work heads (avoid confusion with spindles,
several of which may be present in one work head). Typically, those work heads are positioned
over a worktable, where a part is fixed or mounted.
Multiple spindle drilling machine. It has several spindles connected to one work head, and all
of them are fed to a workpiece simultaneously. Such machines are highly needed for producing
components with a large number of holes located close to each other.
Micro drill press. It is the most accurate CNC drilling machine with small chucks. A micro drill
press is useful for shaping macroscopic components.
Turret type drilling machine. This one has several work heads mounted on a turret. It enables
quick changing of cutting tools and their positioning over a workpiece.

CNC drilling is required in these products

Metal fabrication. Holes drilling in solid metal for automobile, aerospace, and other industries
are the most frequent use of this machining. Some of such products may include turning wheel
hubs, custom shafts, gear blanks, and more.
Wood manufacturing. Along with other machining operations, drilling is the frequent method
of shaping wooden workpieces for furniture or other purposes.
Electronic components. Highly precise CNC drilling machines can shape computer parts of
microscopic sizes at rapid production rates.
Electrical industry. Some electrical components intended to transfer power require drilling for
their production.

Plastic manufacturing. Plastic parts intended for various purposes and having intricate designs
are frequently made with CNC drilling machines.

10
MEASURING INSTRUMENTS

Measuring instruments
Figure 3.5

They manufacture or service various measuring instruments used in different industries with
highest standard and quality.
Various measuring instruments are:

 Outside micrometer
 Depth micrometer
 Depth vernier
 Vernier caliper
 Dial vernier
 Bore dial
 Height gauge
 GMT surface plate with bench center
 Bewel protractor
 Digital height gauge
 Groove micrometer
 Digital micrometer

On every CNC machine there are preliminary operations that must be carried out The
original and classic method is to touch the workpiece, or the machine table, using the tool itself
in conjunction with a feeler gauge or even a piece of paper to establish the Z value (length) of the
tool.

11
This operation using the machine takes about two minutes and often, especially for large
machines, it can be particularly inconvenient to carry out as the operator must physically enter
the machine. It is certainly the least accurate and most expensive method in terms of machine
downtime! Another method for measuring tools on CNC machines is to adopt a mechanical
‘feeler’ or gauge.

The final method often considered and recommended to provide presetting inside the
machine tool is normally for an accessory to be requested when purchasing the machine tool.
Today this solution has become very common and almost a standard for most machine tool
manufacturers and suppliers.

It’s simple enough to take a ruler or a measuring tape and mark out inches or millimeters.
But measuring dimensions of CNC machined parts – many with tolerances tighter than +/- .001
inch. Every CNC machine shop will use a different set of metrology tools, depending on the
type, quantity and quality of work they do.

Surface plate
A surface plate is a flat surface used as a reference point for vertical (Y-axis)
measurements. They’re only useful if they’re properly calibrated and maintain their shape
impeccably. Because of its smooth surface and low level of expansion and contraction with
temperature changes, granite is often the material of choice for surface plates.

Go/No-Go Gage

Go/No-Go gages measure parts to ensure that they are within their specified tolerances.
The “no-go” portion represents one end of the tolerance range, and the “go” portion represents
the other.

Callipers
Calipers range broadly in shape, size and sophistication. Regardless of type, calipers all
measure using the same principle: by allowing two opposing tips to rest at the beginning and end
of a distance being measured.
Vernier calipers: First perfected in the 1600s, vernier calipers consist of a flat bar along which
two opposing tips slide. The distance between the tips is measured using an accurately graded
scale.

12
Dial calipers: Dial calipers function similarly to Vernier calipers, but display measurements on a
simple dial, making them easier to read.
Digital calipers: Like dial calipers, digital calipers offer an easy-to-read display–in this case, a
digital screen.
Micrometer
Micrometers use a calibrated screw, connected to a scale that moves as the screw is
turned clockwise or counterclockwise. Many micrometers look and function similarly to calipers,
but they can come in a variety of shapes.

Caliper micrometer: General description of any micrometer made up of two opposing parts
joined by a frame; often similar in appearance to Vernier calipers, but replacing the flat bar with
a screw.
Bore micrometer: A micrometer attached to a bore gage, used to measure the size and shape of
holes.
Depth micrometer: A micrometer used to measure the depth of any recess, hole or slot.

Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)

CMMs vary widely when it comes to the “probe” component, or the attachment that
directly measures an object through contact or proximity. Originally, all probes were mechanical,
and recorded coordinates through direct contact with a surface. Optical probes, more recently
developed, have a camera-like component that scans images at specified coordinates, registering
changes in contrast within the image to determine accurate measurements

Laser Scanning Arms

State-of-the-art machine shops can take metrology to the next level with laser scanning
arms. These devices, a type of portable CMM, allow metrologists to measure a broad range of
dimensions simultaneously, and are capable of making millions of calculations per second. More
basic CMMs require time-consuming calibrations and dozens of measurements, but laser
scanning arms save time by automatically taking measurements from thousands of points on
an object.

13
Overall supply of the company
Over the years, consumers have become more and more demanding in terms of the
features they expect from the products they purchase. Because of these increasingly specific
requests and expectations, the manufacturing industry has seen a shift in the way certain products
are made. Having a capable supply chain management system is especially important for
manufacturers.

The first step is that the client company approaches for a machine component making to
our company and our company quote the rate for purchase of raw material ,process cost,
packaging forwarding cost and delivery cost all these cost are calculated and they make a sample
of this and send it to the client company through the enquiry and when the client accepts it .the
purchase order and the diagram of the component is send to our company through [Link] our
company purchases the raw materials and they start to prepare the component in units.

If and when there is a decrease in raw material cost. Client company intimate our
company about the cost reduction in raw materials and deduction is done on the basis of market
value in raw materials obtained , and then the overall deduction with GST and then the process
cost, packaging cost and transportation cost is mentioned in the delivery challan and the product
is dispatched successfully.

3.3 OVERVIEW OF VARIOUS DEPARTMENT

1. HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT

 Human resources (HR) is the division of a business that is charged with finding, screening,
recruiting, and training job applicants. It also administers employee-benefit programs.
 HR plays a key role in helping companies deal with a fast-changing business environment and a
greater demand for quality employees in the 21st century.
 A human resources department is focused on the recruiting and retention of employees within a
company. HR typically finds, hires (and fires), and trains employees.

19
 An HR department is an essential component of any business, regardless of an organization's
size. It is tasked with maximizing employee productivity and protecting the company from any
issues that may arise within the [Link] responsibilities include compensation and
benefits, recruitment, firing, and keeping up to date with any laws that may affect the company
and its employees.

FUNCTIONS OF HR DEPARTMENT

Recruiting The Right People for The Right Job

The success of recruiters and employment specialists generally is measured by the

number of positions they fill and the time it takes to fill those positions. Recruiters who work in-
house – as opposed to companies that provide recruiting and staffing services – play a key role in
developing the employer's workforce.

Compensation And Benefits

Like employee and labour relations, the compensation and benefits functions of HR often
can be handled by one HR specialist with dual expertise. On the compensation side, the HR
functions include setting compensation structures and evaluating competitive pay practices. A
compensation and benefits specialist also may negotiate group health coverage rates with
insurers and coordinate activities with the retirement savings fund administrator. Payroll can be a
component of the compensation and benefits section of HR; however, in many cases, employers
outsource such administrative functions as payroll.

Training And Development

Employers must provide employees with the tools necessary for their success which, in
many cases, means giving new employees extensive orientation training to help them transition
into a new organizational culture. Leadership training may be required of newly hired and
promoted supervisors and managers on topics such as performance management and how to
handle employee relations matters at the department level.

20
Occupational Health and Safety

HR plays a vital role in the creation and implementation of occupational health and
safety policies. This can be a particularly delicate task in many sectors as we are dealing with
health and safety of employees. The team must Implement safety measures when regulations
change, Ensure compliance with regulations.
2. PURCHASING DEPARTMENT
Purchasing departments are often an important part of large corporations and small
businesses. They establish policies and procedures that try to ensure the financial health of a
company. Understanding the functions and roles of purchasing departments may help you
develop supply strategies and procurement goals to benefit your company.
A purchasing department is the division of a company that's responsible for acquiring the
goods and services the business requires to operate. Some companies refer to purchasing
departments as procurement departments or buying departments. These units are often an
important part of helping companies meet their daily needs and their long-term strategic goals.

Key Functions of Purchasing Departments

All purchasing department functions are aligned with the business objectives of an
organization. Identify business requirements for goods, materials, and services
 Find reliable suppliers to meet these requirements
 Negotiate prices, build quality, and delivery terms
 Set up the order quantities and making bid requests on supply contracts
 Coordinate delivery and storage operations
 Run quality control and product testing
 Manage budgets based on ROIs and payments.

Acquiring Goods at the Best Possible Price

Purchasing departments must continuously evaluate materials based on quality and, more
importantly, on pricing! To maximize profitability, organizations need to procure goods
efficiently. For example, buying small quantities from a large vendor is not economically
practical. The procurement team must achieve bulk discounts on these orders and negotiate with
alternate vendors for better pricing.

21
Procuring Raw Materials and Other Resources
One role of the purchasing department is to procure all necessary materials needed for
production or daily operation of the company or government organization. For a manufacturing
company, this might include raw materials such as iron, steel, aluminium or plastics, but it also
might include tools, machinery, delivery trucks or even the office supplies needed for the
secretaries and sales team.

Compliance with Business Protocol

The purchasing department also must ensure that it is complying with all company
policies. In a company, individual staff members may communicate with the purchasing
department about purchasing needs for things such as office supplies or computers. Before
making a purchase, the purchasing department must ensure that it heeds the proper protocols for
purchase and budget approval and must ensure that any items are purchased in accordance with
the overall purchasing policy of the organization.

3. SALES DEPARTMENT
A sales department is responsible for selling products or services for a company. The
department comprises a sales team that works together to make sales, increase profitability and
build and maintain relationships with customers to encourage repeat purchases and brand loyalty.

Preparing sales plans

The sales department identifies sales goals and objectives and prepares a sales plan that
acts as a guide to achieving them. The goals usually include things like hitting sales quotas and
volumes. These goals tend to be short term. A sales plan includes details like the company's
history, goals and objectives, team structure, target market, sales process, tools and resources.
Detailing the sales process is necessary when preparing a sales plan.

Prospecting

The sales department is responsible for sourcing and identifying early stage leads.
Sourcing involves online research on various sites, attending industry events or conferences or
asking for referrals from current clients or colleagues. When the department has identified the
leads, it takes them through the sales process by contacting them through cold calling, emails or
other means in an effort to qualify them for sales outreach.

22
Making sales

The department is responsible for bringing new business, pitching and closing a sales
deal. Individuals accountable for this process write proposals, create presentations or run
demonstrations to convince prospects to become customers. Due to the complexity of
demonstrations, the sales department reserves them for qualified leads.

Handling sales issues

These sales issues could include answering complex questions from prospects or
customers, handling objections, resolving sales challenges or performing product
demonstrations. Individuals who handle these responsibilities are sales specialists. They're
professionals with in- depth knowledge and experience of the sales industry and the products and
services that the company offers.

4. IT DEPARTMENT

An IT organization (information technology organization) in the department within a

company that is charged with establishing, monitoring and maintaining Information Technology
systems and services. In a large enterprise, the IT organization is typically managed by a Chief
Information Officer (CIO). Smaller IT organizations might report up to an IT Director or
Operations Manager.

Some programmers create programs that are specific to the needs of the organization, such as an
application to manage human resources, run a piece of manufacturing equipment, track
inventory, process work orders or complete any task the organization needs accomplished.

Company Website

 The IT department creates and maintains the company‘s website. The webmaster and other
professionals in the IT department design the layout of the site, write the programming code
and test the site for its usability.

23
 A company website can be an informational site providing contact information for the public
as well as a commercial site that sells products directly to consumers.
Technical Support
 The IT department in any organization provides support to computer users in the company.
This can include installing new software, repairing hardware problems, installing new
hardware, troubleshooting problems and training employees how to use new software
programs.
 Many businesses maintain an IT help desk in the company to assist employees with computer-
related issues

5. TECHNICAL DEPARTEMENT
A technical manager provides technical direction for development, design and systems
integration. She reviews the work involved and follows the project through testing and
production deployment phases. Technical support helps businesses compete. In other words, it
generates a competitive edge by helping execute critical business process quickly and efficiently
At its most basic, technical support monitors and maintains your computer systems,
provides the technical expertise needed to keep your systems running smoothly, and supplies the
know how to tailor your system to your specific needs. That boosts efficiency and productivity

 Propose methods to improve management to increase business efficiency to Director of
Company, apply technical innovations in business productions.

6. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT

Preventive maintenance involves taking the necessary precautions and actions to prevent
accidents or equipment failures from occurring before they happen. For example: performing
regular business and equipment inspections, cleaning and lubricating essential equipment, and
tidying your business’s grounds are all examples of preventive maintenance.

The goal of preventive maintenance is to prevent equipment failure before it occurs, and
to reduce the risk of accidents. Ultimately, taking certain precautions to ensure minimal risk to
your business means that you and your staff can focus on improving what already works, instead
of having to repair what is broken.

Any type of maintenance that is not reactive (i.e. a response to a problem, malfunctioning
equipment, technology, etc.) is preventive, and there are many different types of preventive
maintenance that pertain to different areas of a business, or specific timing. We’ll explore these

25
in

26
detail in the next section, but a few types include time-based maintenance, usagebased
maintenance, predictive maintenance, and prescriptive maintenance.

Types of Preventive Maintenance

Preventive maintenance isn’t a blanket term. Here are some of the most common different types:

Time-based maintenance

It can be helpful to create a monthly or annual maintenance schedule that complies with
manufacturer recommendations for inspecting and cleaning equipment to keep on track. Even
outside of these recommendations, we should keep in mind that the most essential equipment to
our business should be checked regularly to ensure the best possible operations. When creating a
time-based preventive maintenance plan, or deciding what to add to it, consider the major
utilities, equipment, tools, and technology that our business depends upon for success.
To support time-based maintenance, it’s also a good idea to keep detailed notes about
previous breakdowns and problems with tools and equipment, so we have a better idea of which
systems and equipment might need a bit of extra care.

Usage-based maintenance

If our business uses certain machinery or equipment every single day, it’s a good idea to
track usage (i.e. equipment monitors, operating hours, production cycles), especially if the
equipment doesn’t automatically produce tickets or notifications when a certain number of
operating hours have been reached. This is referred to as usage-based maintenance.
Whether it’s a vehicle oil change, or an essential piece of machinery that has reached X
number of hours, staying on top of proper care and maintenance will ensure long-lasting use of
important equipment.

Predictive maintenance

Predictive maintenance relies on sensors to capture information about equipment (i.e.

temperature sensors, or vibration sensors), and is generally specific to technology that can trigger
work orders if a machine or appliance is in need of an inspection or upgrade.

Prescriptive maintenance

Similar to the patterns that predictive maintenance analyzes, prescriptive maintenance uses

27
advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to generate predictions about
maintenance, and also act on them. Basically, prescriptive maintenance makes recommendations
to improve system operations, and also follows up on its own to produce a work order and
oversee the entire process.
That’s because it probably is for most businesses. As long as we’re manually checking
our essential equipment, and staying on top of manufacturer recommendations and inspection
procedures, we’re already well on our way to effective preventive maintenance—no prescriptive
maintenance required.

Benefits of Preventive Maintenance department

 Preventive maintenance will decrease business downtime and closures due to unexpected
equipment failures.
 Preventive maintenance will increase equipment life expectancy, so you’ll spend fewer
dollars in the long run.
 Preventive maintenance will ensure all equipment and employees work only during scheduled
hours, eliminating the need for paying overtime due to unexpected machinery breakdowns,
etc.
 Preventive maintenance will significantly reduce safety risks for employees and customers,
thereby reducing the costly risk of lawsuits and workers’ comp.
 Preventive maintenance means less energy consumption for your assets and equipment due to
high levels of operational efficiency, which will reduce your utility bills.

3.4 DETAILED STUDY OF THE SELECTED

DEPARTMENT- ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT
The accounting department refers to the division in a firm that looks after the preparation
of financial statements, maintenance of general ledger, payment of bills, preparation of customer
bills, payroll, and more. In other words, they are responsible for managing the overall economic
front of the business. It is impossible for any business, whether a small firm operating out of
home or a large multinational company, to function for too long without an accounting
department.

Functions of the Accounting Department

 To maintain and record all business transactions accurately and comprehensively in a

28
systematic way, they can be retrieved and reviewed at any time.

29
 To maintain adequate internal controls within the organization to safeguard its valuable
resources.
 To provide a basis for performance assessment and create accountability across the
organization.
 To keep track of costs incurred by the company and advise the modification of existing
operations to reduce operating costs

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT

To plan based on anticipation of business needs and expected availability of resources. The
accounting department is responsible for a large number of administrative functions within an
organization. Though considered "back office" activities, these functions are essential to the
proper operation of a business. The most common responsibilities of the accounting department
are as follows:

Billings. A billings group assembles information from the shipping and customer order
departments to create invoices that are sent to the company's customers. It is essential to issue
billings on time, in order to enhance cash flows.

Budgeting. The department assists the rest of the company with the formulation of a company-
wide budget, which is used to plan for expenditures in the coming year, including the purchase of
fixed assets. The previous year’s budget may be used as a baseline to formulate the budget for
the next year.

Collections. The accounting department is responsible for keeping track of overdue invoice
payments from customers, and uses a variety of methods to extract payment from them,
including dunning letters, phone calls, and attorney letters.

Financial statements. A reporting group within the department creates adjusting journal entries
to bring the company's initial financial results into compliance with the applicable accounting
framework, writes footnotes to accompany the financial statements, and releases financials
following the end of each reporting period.

Internal reporting. A cost accounting staff can provide considerable value by calculating the
profitability of various products, product lines, services, customers, sales regions, stores, and so
forth.

30
Payables. The payables staff collects supplier invoices and employee expense reports, verifies
that the billed amounts are authorized for payment, and issues payments to recipients on
scheduled payment dates.

Payroll. A specialized group collects time worked information from employees, as well as pay
rate information from the human resources department, calculates tax and other deductions from
employee pay, and issues net pay amounts to employees, either in cash or via checks, pay cards,
or direct deposit.

Taxes. A specially-trained group of accountants estimates the amount of taxable income that the
business is likely to generate, and periodically remits income tax payments to the government,
based on this estimated amount. The tax group also issues tax filings in a number of other areas,
such as franchise taxes, sales taxes, use taxes, and property taxes.

Additional Responsibilities of an Expanded Accounting Department

There are several additional areas in which there is some question regarding which
department should take responsibility. They are:

Credit. The granting of credit to customers can be considered a treasury function, but is usually
placed within the accounting department in smaller companies where there is no treasury staff.

Human resources. The human resource’s function generates a large amount of paperwork, some
of which is used by the payroll staff to determine employee gross pay and pay deductions.
