Solution To Tutorial On Heat

The document provides a tutorial on calculating U values for a 275mm cavity wall with different materials. It details the thermal resistance and conductivity of each element in the wall, leading to the calculation of U values for both a standard cavity and one filled with Urea-formaldehyde foam. Additionally, it demonstrates how to calculate heat flow through the wall based on the U value and temperature difference.

RE TUTORIAL EXAMPLE

Question 1

Calculate the U values (or thermal transmittance) of the following constructions;

a) A 275mm cavity wall comprising 110mm external brickwork (k = 1.2W/mK); 50mm cavity (Rcav =
0.18 m²K/W); 100mm lightweight concrete inner leaf (k = 0.6 W/mK) and 15mm internal plaster (k =
1.0 W/mK). Take Rsi as 0.12 m²K/w and Rse as 0.05 m²K/W.

SOLUTION

Step 1 - Draw a section through the wall.

external surface inside surface

brickwork plaster

cavity block work

Figure 1: Section through the wall

Table 1.0 Table showing information given

Thermal Thermal
Element Thickness (m) Conductivity (k) Resistance (R)
Internal Surface - - 0 120
Plaster 0.015 1.000 0 015
Block 0.100 0.600 0 167
Cavity 0.050 0 28 0 180
Brick 0.110 1.200 0 092
External Surface - - 0 050
Total (Rtot) 0 624
Solution:

Relation between thermal resistance and thermal conductivity

Recall λ is also called the thermal conductivity

Calculate the U value (W/m²K), where U = 1 divided by Rtot.

Transmittance U, U = 1/Rtot

=1/0.624 = 1.60 W/m²K

(b) The same construction as above but with a Urea-formaldehyde (UF) foam cavity fill, the k value of
UF foam being 0.03 W/mK.

Table 2.0 Table showing information given

Thermal Thermal
Element Thickness (m) Conductivity (k) Resistance (R)
Internal Surface - - 0.120
Plaster 0.015 1.000 0.015
Block 0.100 0.600 0.167
Cavity fill 0.050 0.030 1.667
Brick 0.110 1.200 0.092
External Surface - - 0.050
Total (Rtot) 2.111
Solution:

Relation between thermal resistance and thermal conductivity

Recall λ is also called the thermal conductivity

Calculate the U value (W/m²K), where U = 1 divided by Rtot.

U = 1/Rtot

=1/2.111 = 0.474W/m²K

(c) If the wall area in part (b) was 20 m² and the temperature difference between the
internal and external envelope of 10C, then calculate the heat flow through that wall
Pf = ?
A = 20m2
U =
20*0.474* 10 = 94.8W
