U Value Calculation Tutorial Guide

This document is a tutorial sheet for the Building Services course at the University of West Indies, focusing on the calculation of U values for various construction elements. It includes problems related to thermal transmittance for walls, roofs, and average U value calculations, intended to reinforce lecture material. The tutorial problems are for practice and do not contribute to final assessments.

Tutorial sheet : Calculation of U values

These problems are for tutorial purposes only, i.e. to reinforce material covered in
the lectures. They do not count towards final assessment. However, you are strongly
advised to attempt the tutorial problems and discuss any difficulties with your tutor.

1. Calculate the thermal transmittance (U value) of the following construction: An

external wall consisting 105mm brick (k= 0.84); 65mm cavity (Rcav = 0.18);
105mm lightweight concrete block (k = 0.20); 15mm lightweight plaster (k =
0.16). Take Rsi as 0.12 and Rse as 0.05.

2. Calculate the U value for the same construction but given 65mm of coconut fiber
insulation slab (k = 0.04) in lieu of the cavity.

3. Calculate the combined thermal transmittance for the following pitched roofs:

a) U value of roof 2.4 W / m2 K; U value ceiling 0.8 W / m2 K (30o pitch).

b) U value of roof 2.8 W / m2 K; U value ceiling 0.6 W / m2 K (45o pitch).

4. Calculate the average U value for a wall consisting the following elements:

Cavity brickwork 24m2 U = 0.45 W / m2 K

Glazing 10m2 U = 2.80 W / m2 K
Door 2m2 U = 0.70 W / m2 K
DOOR 2m2 U = 0.60 W / m2 K

5. Prove that fabric heat loss/gain through the wall in Q4 (W / K) is the same whether
calculated using an elemental or average U value approach.
