I. Introduction

Previously we defined a rational as a number that can be expresses in the form w h ere p , q ∈ Z∧q ≠ 0.

Based on this definition, the first thing that would come to mind is, of course, fractions - numbers that represent part of a
whole or a set. Fractions are indeed part of the set of rational numbers; natural numbers and integers. After all, each of
these sets contains elements which can be expressed in fraction form. This modules deal also with square roots, subsets
of real numbers, the rational and irrational numbers.

 expresses rational numbers from fraction form to decimal form and vice versa.
 performs operations on rational numbers
 describes principal roots and tells whether they are rational or irrational.
 determines between what two integers the square root of a number is.
 estimates the square root of a whole number to the nearest hundredth.
 plots irrational numbers (up to square roots) on a number line.***
 illustrates the different subsets of real numbers
 arranges real numbers in increasing or decreasing order on a number line

Week 5 Set of Fractions and Decimals
Open your textbook on pages 80 – 94 and study the different types of fractions and fundamental operations on rational
numbers.
Rational numbers can be represented in decimal forms rather than representing in fractions. They can easily be
represented as decimals by just dividing numerator 'p' by denominator 'q' (as rational numbers is in the form of p/q).
A rational number can be expressed as a terminating or nonterminating, recurring decimal.

 The square root of a number is represented as:
√ n=a
Where: n=the number called radicand
√ ❑=the radical sign
a=the square root of the number , n

Note: The positive square root is called the principal square root and will be used as the square root of the positive real
numbers.

Remember:
 Real numbers include the square root of a number. This means that the square root of a real number may be a
rational or an irrational number.
 A perfect square number has two equal factors. One of its factors is equal to its square root.
 √ 0=0
 The square root of a perfect square is a rational number.
 The square root of an imperfect square is an irrational number.
 The square root of negative real numbers is not a real number. It is an imaginary number, one that does not
exist.
Finding the square root without using calculator, see pages 105 – 108. Study the given example in your book. This shows
how to estimates the square root of a number to the nearest hundredths and present how to determine between what

Then study the figures below as an illustration about subsets of real numbers.

Ordering Rational Numbers


Using the number line, numbers to the right of zero increases while numbers to the left of zero decreases. This means
that all negative numbers are less than zero and all positive numbers are greater than zero. A number line is shown
below.

You may arrange rational numbers in increasing order (ascending) which means from lowest to greatest while decreasing
order (descending) means from greatest to lowest form. An example is presented on page 70, example 2. 25. You may
