COMP S491 Programming Environment User Guide

First-time sign-in
To access the course programming environment for the first time:

1. Open a Web browser and surf to [Link] A sign-in page

appears.

2. Sign in using your user name and password as follows.

a. Your user name is the letter ‘s’ followed by the first seven digits of your student
ID number. For example, your user name is ‘s1234567’ if your student ID is
12345678.

b. Your initial password is the last four alpha-numeric characters of your HKID
followed by ‘@comp’. For example, your initial password is ‘654B@comp’ if your HKID
is A987654(B).

The JupyterLab environment is loaded.

3. In JupyterLab double-click to open the file [Link]. To change your password,
surf to or click the link [Link]
Note that there is no password confirmation; thus, please make sure to type your
password slowly and carefully, observe whether the caps-lock is on or off, and
remember your password.

4. Open the file [Link] if necessary. Then, click on the Retrieve Course Contents
button at the top of the file. This copies the course units to your account for viewing,
running programs, and performing activities.

5. When you are finished, sign out by selecting the menu File > Log Out.
Update course materials
Course materials in the form of Jupyter notebooks etc. can be copied to your home directory. To
retrieve or update your local copy of course materials, in JupyterLab double-click to open the file
[Link], and then click on the Retrieve Course Contents button at the top of the file.

Change passwords and forget passwords

To change your password, sign into the JupyterLab environment and then surf to or click the link
[Link] Note that there is no password
confirmation; thus, please make sure to type your password slowly and carefully, observe
whether the caps-lock is on or off, and remember your password.

Do not use a command line tool (e.g. passwd) to change the password – this does not change
your password for signing into the JupyterLab environment, and this may have adverse effects
on your account and data.

If you forget your password, ask for support to reset your password, by sending an email to
comps491@[Link] and stating your full name and full student ID number.

File storage
Your account has a quota of 2G disk storage.

Please download your important files such as assignment files frequently and periodically.
Backup and safeguard the files to your computer harddisk, USB drives, and cloud storage (e.g.
Google Drive or OneDrive).
