Write your answers on the answer sheet.
1. Study the sources below carefully and answer the following questions.
Source 1: A news report on the stress of DSE candidates
In March of 2024, the Hok Yau Club ( 學 友 社 ) successfully conducted a sampling survey
through online questionnaires with S6 students from 107 secondary schools, interviewing 651
current candidates. The results indicate that the average stress level of candidates in March was
6.77 points, lower than 7.87 points in 2022 and 7.01 points in 2023. However, 22.9% of
surveyed candidates still experienced extremely high stress levels of 9 to 10 points, a 0.2%
increase compared to previous years, reflecting that some candidates still face very high pressure
in dealing with the HKDSE. Concerning the stress related to “future prospects”, 39.5% of
respondents expressed feeling “extremely stressful” a nearly 6% increase from the previous
year’s 33.7%.

Source 2: The HKFYG “One Line With You” assistance cases
From September 2022 to August 2023, the HKFYG “One Line With You” handled 15,282
cases related to emotional issues and 13,795 cases related to campus life. The following is the
case that was dealt with:
A S6 student attending a traditional school where both teachers and students place great
emphasis on academic performance, facing intense peer competition. After returning to in-
person classes last year, the student tirelessly caught up with the curriculum. Apart from
attending classes and extra tutoring, the student rarely left home, leading to extreme physical and
mental tiredness. Upon the commencement of the new school year, the student started
experiencing hand tremors and insomnia, feeling lost when choosing programs for university
admission. Despite receiving care and support from parents and friends, with the HKDSE
approaching and no other options available, the student felt he could only “endure for as long as
possible”.

Mock Exam Paper module 1.1
F. Data-based Questions(10 marks)
1. (a) Future prospects; the pressure of public examinations
(b) If stress is not properly managed, it can lead to excessive pressure, bringing negative
impacts on physical, mental, and emotional well-being. For instance, the students in Source
2 faced overwhelming pressure, resulting in extreme physical and mental tiredness, even
leading to hand tremors and insomnia. Additionally, based on my knowledge, excessive
pressure can also have emotional effects, making us depressed, feeling uneasy, upset and
irritable. In severe cases, this could result in anxiety disorders, depression, and other
illnesses. (Or other reasonable answer)
(c) Elementary question:
(Answer two of the followings)
Adopting positive attitudes: We should face difficulties with optimism and work step
by step towards our goals; plan tasks according to personal abilities and time, helping to
reduce stress when facing challenges.
Motivating ourselves: Believe in ourselves to conquer difficulties, and reward
ourselves upon successfully achieving goals, aiding in alleviating stress during each
challenge.
Relaxing: Try to relax by reading beneficial books and articles, engaging in moderate
exercise, joining groups or artistic activities, maintaining enough sleep, etc., which
greatly helps in handling stress.
Seeking help: When facing problems that are hard to solve, we can talk to friends,
teachers and social workers to relieve stress.; when necessary, seek assistance from a
psychiatrist.
Advanced question:
Enhancing resilience allows us to confidently and calmly tackle problems when faced
with challenges. Resilience comprises three key elements, including sense of
competence, belonging, and optimism:
Firstly, boosting sense of competence enables teenagers to manage their emotions
effectively, show care for others, possess confidence, and believe in their problem-
solving abilities when encountering difficulties.
Secondly, enhancing sense of belonging enables us to feel the care and support of those
around us, encouraging us to bravely confront and address challenges.
Lastly, fostering sense of optimism helps us maintain a positive and proactive attitude,
