A. Arithmetic Progression
An Arithmetic Progression ( AP ) is a sequence which the difference between any term and its preceding
term is the constant d. The sequence U 1 , U 2 , U 3 , ...., U n called AP if :

U 2 − U 1 = U 3 − U 2 = .... = U n − U n −1 = d ( common difference )

Formula for nth term : U n = a + (n − 1)d

Formula for sum of the first n terms : S n = {2a + (n − 1)d }
2
To find U n if formula S n is known : U n = S n − S n−1
B. Geometric Progression
An Geometric Progression ( GP ) is a sequence which the ratio between any term and its preceding term is
the constant r. The sequence U1 , U 2 , U 3 , ..., U n called GP if

U2 U3 Un
