KENDRADHIPATYA DOSHA

VIEW POINT OF DIFFERENT AUTHORS

(COMPILED FROM SEPT’1999 & NOV’1999 ISSUE OF THE ASTROLOGICAL
MAGAZINE)

EDITORIAL - September 1999

By SMT. GAYATHRI DEVI VASUDEV.

BPHS – 35.02 BENEFICS as Kendra lords do not give good results. Likewise
malefics as Kendra lords do not give ashubha or malefic results. But trikona
lords or the rulers of trins irrespective of their being benefic or malefic always
give good results.

Kendradhipathya dosha attaches itself only to Jupiter, Venus well aspected

Mercury and waxing Moon. Sun, Mars, Saturn, afflicted Mercury and waning
Moon are immune to this dosha.

Ascendant by definition is both a Kendra and trikona lord, therefore its ruler is
always a benefic. If a planet is both kendra & trikona lord its power to do good
overcomes its Kendradhipathya dosha, if it is a natural benefic giving rise to
Yogakaraka.

Jupiter is associated with knowledge and happiness – these significations are

adversely hit.
Venus rules desires, love, conjugal life – can make life deficient in these areas.

Mercury rules speech and communication – trouble in these abilities.

Moon rules the mind – mental peace and health becomes a casualty.

Moon has Kendradhipathya dosha in case of Aries, Libra and Capricorn

Ascendants – but not capable of major malefic results.

Mercury is Kendra lord with its attendant evils only if unafflicted by malefics

Mars, Saturn, Sun, Rahu or Ket for signs Sagittarius and Pisces.
Venus becomes evil kendra lord for Cancer, Leo, for Aries and Scorpio as 7th
lord he assumes the power to do evil.
Jupiter is malefic for Gemini and Virgo.
Degree of malificience - Jupiter most malefic followed by Venus and then
Mercury and lastly Moon.

Greatest impact of Kendradhipathya dosha - Gemini & Virgo natives.
Jupiter can become a partial badhaka or a full fledged maraka depending upon
whether Gulika is placed in Sagittarius or Pisces. The condition of being the
22nd drekkana lord and therefore acquiring badhaka cannot be fulfilled by
Jupiter, because of the reason that any of the three drekkanas rising in Gemini
or Virgo ascendant will not falls in Sagittarius or Pisces. This combination of
marakatwa, bhadakatwa and kendra lordship works to produce greatest havoc
in the lives of Gemini & Virgo.

Jupiter for such natives if placed in the Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) or trines (5,9)
ceases to be an evil lord or malefic and may even promote the bhava he
influences.

As far as Jupiter’s, Kendradhipathya dosha goes both for Gemini and Virgo,
his occupation of the 7th has a shattering influence on marital life. If in the 2nd
(maraka sthana) it can damage finance, family, mental peace and career too.
In the 3rd Jupiter ceases to hurt. In the 4th Jupiter is upto mischief again for
both signs destroying domestic peace and hurting vocational life. In the 5th he
is welcome & benevolent. In the 6th he even promotes career trinally aspecting
the 10th but can be beneficial for marriage. In the 8th as 7th & 10th lord , for
Gemini in a dustana, he attracts malefic results such as humiliation and false
charges in career and physical and even emotional distancing from the spouse.
For Virgo Jupite in this dustana as the 4th & 7th lord while not harming the 4th
too much can affect marital life and the durability adversely. In the 9th Jupiter
becomes generous and helpful conferring a good spouse and marriage. In the
10th for Gemini in his own sign Pisces he is a powerfully helpful influence on
career matters. For Virgo too, he gives stability and respect in one’s vocational
life. Marriage in both these cases will be good. In the 11th again his power for
evil is neutrliased. In the 12th Kendradhipathya dosha has no adverse
influence on mental life and happiness.

SECOND EDITORIAL - NOVEMBER 1999

If a planet acquired Kendradhipathya dosha in the rashi chartist malefic

influence will undoubtedly show up irrespective of its position in the varga
charts. Its strength in the varga charts is not an antidote for the evil of
Kendradhipathya dosha. The navamsha chart can be taken as a mild influence
on the rashi, but only in a secondary sense. Therefore whatever the varga
strength of a planet, it cannot supercede the Kendradhipathya dosha which
has its origins in the rashi chart. Even if Jupiter as 7th lord has shadvarga
bala his Kendradhipathya dosha is not removed. It affects the marital
relationship and domestic peace very badly, so also with Venus and venefic
Mercuty as kendra lords.

Jupiter has the greatest Kendradhipathya dosha because this dosha is aided
by his bhadakatwa (full or partial) and marakatwa. Venus comes next becase
Venus acquires Marakatwa in addition in the the case of Aries and Scorpio. In
the case of Cancer ascendant though not affected by marakatwa, there is
bhadakatwa. For leo ascendant Kendradhipathya dosha due to Venus is not
affected by badhakatwa or marakatwa and so may not be as impactful as for
Cancer ascendant.

Kendradhipathya dosha is an affliction that his any natural benefics and under
certain conditions only, these conditions being dictated primarily by the
houses occupied by the planets. The dosha ceases to be effective when the
kendra lord associates with a trine (5, 9, 1) or an upchaya (3, 6, 10, 11) lord.
Secondly the dosha surfaces in the strongest sense of the term during the dasa
of the kendra lord. It can show up to a less degree in the bhukti also of the
kendra lord but only in the dasa of a functional malefic for the ascendant in
question. Kendradhipathya dosha does not affect the results of Raja yogas or
Dhana yogas cuased by the kendra lords. It tens to affect adversely personal
matter and relationships more than material situations.

Kendradhipathya dosha is a selective affliction and attaches itself with great

force to Jupiter, primarily and to a lesser extent to Venus. Then follow Mercury
and Moon in that order. Its power for evil depends upon the position of the
kendra lord in the chart and is not absolute.

SRI. BEPIN BEHARI

The great B. V. Raman who explored extensively the various aspects of

the subject has mentioned in his ‘300 Important Combinations’ - Evidently
Kendradhipathya dosha is not a planetary combination, it suggests a certain
fault with the planet’s concerned.

Indeen Kendradhipathya dosha is a very involved astrological tenet, but

with must trepidation, I am submitting my views with an intention of learning
from the contribution of erudite astrologers and scholars. Here I only intent to
emphasise that the cardinal houses stand in a different category from other
houses and any planetary relationship with these houses imparts to them
certain impulses for accelerating the evolutionary impetus to the person
concerned. The position of planets thus affected in cardinal houses helps in
accelerating evolution, when they are placed in non-cardinal houses, then also
the same result follows, but these results due to their deep churning of Karmic
sediments often seem troublesome. This is the gist of all that I intend to covery
for the consideration of readers.

Prof. P S SASTRY

Jupiter for Sagittarius, Mercury for Virgo and Moon for Cancer are always
benefics.
Jupiter is not a benefic for Pisces Lagna even if his 10th house is a Moola
Trikona. Like wise Mercury cannot become a benefic for Mercury lagna.
In the Mahapurusha yogas the defect of owning one or two angles is rejected.
The dosha is rejected for some lagnas – Venus – Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra,
Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius lagna. Jupiter – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius,
Pisces lagna. Mercury – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces lagna.

I take the cue from ‘Bhavartha Rathnakara’ - If a benefic owns an angle

which is his Moola Trikona, the defect of owning an angle is nullified. Thus
Jupiter and Mercury for the four dual signs are not malefics. Venus of course
is not a malefic for Libra. What I am advocating needs careful examination by
competent persons.

Sri. N SUNDARARAJAN

The theory of benefics becoming malefics and vice versa is exclusively

found in ‘JATAKA CHANDRIKA’ of Kalidasa and to the extent of my belief, no
other astrological treatise of antique value makes any mention of this dosha.
Generally benefics are Jupiter, Venus, bright Moon and Mercury – unafflicted
by malefics. Therefore in this theory of ownership Mercury and Moon are to be
modified by their natural malificience or beneficience becase if Mercury
becomes malefic by association with or aspect of malefics or if the Moon is in
the dark half, then, if they own kendras they become benefics. But in the case
of Jupiter and Venus such a modification does not arise. Therefore the
practical part of the theory reduced to these two planets.
Jupiter becomes owner of a kendra for Gemini & Virgo, Pisces &
Sagittarius only. Out of these four signs Jupiter becomes lagna lord for Pisces
& Sagittarius. It is a generally accepted theory of all astrological texts that the
lagna lord is always a benefic. Venus becomes owner of kendra for 8
ascendants. Venus becomes the lord of lagna for two signs out of eight –
Taurus & Libra. So effectively the evils of angular lordships (Kendradhipathya
dosha) reduces to two signs. Virgo and Gemini in case of Jupiter.
In the case of Venus, the evil arises for the lagnas Cancer, Leo, Scorpio,
Capricorn, Aquarius and Aries. In the case of Jupiter’s Kendradhipathya
dosha, if the ascendant is either Gemini or Virgo, Jupiter in addition becomes
malefic by virtue of ownship of Badhakasthana. Venus becomes owner of
Badhakasthana for Cancer & Aquarius and for Aries he becomes the owner of
the 2nd (marakasthana) and for Scorpio owner of the 7th & 12th (maraka and
vyaya).
Therefore in the case of Venus Kendradhipathya dosha is greater for
these four ascendants Aries, Cancer, Scorpio and Aquarius.
In case of Jupiter it is geater for Gemini & Virgo ascendants. Since
Kalidasa says the dosha is greatest if they are posited in or own maraka
houses, the evil of angular ownerships (Kendradhipathya dosha) is all the more
effective for Gemini & Virgo ascendants (Jupiter) and the four aascendants
Aries, Cancer, Scorpio, Aquarius (Venus).
In practical experience , however, this dosha like any other dosha is modified
by the association, aspect of other benefics and similarly aggravated by
association, aspect of malefics.

In the case of Moon and Mercury this evil arises only if the Moon is in the
bright half of the lunar month and Mercury is alone or associated or aspected
by benefics.

Therefore in my humble opinion Kendradhipathya dosha need not be blown out

of propotion as to cause undue alarms and it is to be treated like any other
dosha such as Angaraka Dosha, Kaalasarpa dosha, etc..

Even in cases where the evil operates the effect of association, aspects, etc., of
benefics considerably reduces the efrfective malificience of this dosha and in
some cases only buatiful results have occurred.

JUSTICE S N KAPOOR

The lordship of the 7th house a marakasthana and badhakasthana of Jupiter

has led some to the extreme length of condemning the natural benefic Jupiter.
Venus is also condemned for it owns the 2nd or 12th alongwith the 7th for Aries
and Sccorpio lagnas, as if Jupiter and Venus are as evil and baneful as lords of
the 6, 8, 12 houses and therefore they should be shunned. They further go to
the extent by stating that the benefics as lords of a kendra with
Kendradhipathya dosha should be weak in 3, 6, 8, 12 houses or in debility.

Such views do not also consider the exclusive position of the lagna lord
being a kendra lord as well as a trikona lord which generally makes for a yoga
karaka.

There exists a distinction between the lagna, a kendra as well as a

trikona, and the other kendras (4, 7, 10) and thus beteen the lords of 4, 7, 10
houses, the lord of lagna is especially auspicious as the lagna is a kendra as
well as trikona. The 5th & 9th houses specially confer wealth.

The moment one consider the aforesaid distinction between the lagna and the
other kendras (4, 7, 10) one may have no other option fut to execute lagna for
the present purpose from the definition of a kendra. If the lagna lords is not a
kendra, naturally the lagna lord would never suffer from Kendradhipathya
dosha.

KENDRADHIPATHYA DOSHA DEFINED

Kendradhipathis excepting the lagna laord are netural and indifferent
irrespective of their natural malefic and benefic nature. This is so when they
are neither associated with nor aspected by not in exchange of signs with
trikona lords for favourable results or with the lords of 6, 9, 12 for malefic
results. If a natural benefic is a kendra lord there would naturally be dearth
of benefic results. Similarly if natural malefics are indifferent or neutral, there
would be dearth of inauspicious results. Thus benefic just do not give benefic
results. They themselves do not cause harm. But benefic lords of 4, 7, 10 by
becoming neutral – in the absence of any counter balancing factor of
relationship with trikona lords or not being a trikona lords as well, sould lead
to lack of happiness relating to the houses owned by and relating to
karakatwas of such planets suffering from Kendradhipathya dosha.
Kendradhipathya dosha is not absolute, it is a relative accordance with other
malefic or benefic influences. It is only a variable subject to other variables –
both benefic and malefic.

In this context it would be relevant to consider that a kendra lord may

suffer from
(1) Kendradhipathya dosha (2) placement in the 3, 6, 8, 12 houses (3)
relationship with 3, 6, 8, 12 lords (4) its debilitation, combustion, placement in
inimical signs inimical navamsha. The later three factors may aggravate the
results.

In order to appreciate its scope Kendradhipathya dosha is required to be

interpreted harmoniously along with other rules laid by Parashara.

I find it difficult to accept the perception that Kendradhipathya dosha is

confined to Vimshottari dasha of the concerned planet. It may be applicable to
all Nakshatra based Dashas.
When the Nakshatra dasha or bhukthi of a planet suffering from
Kendradhipathya dosha operates, it may be pronounced. More research is
needed in this area.

So far as Marakatwa of Jupiter Venus, Mercury and Moon (in descending
order) is concerned, it can be pronounced only when they are located in 7th
but not when in 4th and 10th houses.
It may prove rewarding if research is undertaken on Nakshatra wise
location of such planets (Kendradhipathya dosha) with reference to Janma
Nakshatra, Lagna Nakshatra and Nakshatra of the dasha lord. Research
scholars can also consider Pushkaramsha, Pushkara Navamsha, Aristhamsha
and Mrityubhaga of the concerned planet to assess the extent of dosha. Their
subha and asubha navamshas, Vargothamamsha may be helpful not only from
the point of view of the extent of dosha generally but also from that of
MEDICAL ASTROLOGY.

Common questions

Venus' role as a Kendra lord is influenced by Kendradhipathya dosha differently across ascendants. For Cancer, Leo, Aries, and Scorpio, Venus assumes malefic qualities due to its lordship over the 7th and 2nd houses (marakasthanas), enhancing the dosha. In Capricorn and Aquarius, Venus combines its dosha with badhakatwa, impacting these ascendants with more significant effects. However, when Venus becomes the lagna lord, as in Taurus and Libra, it remains a benefic, reducing the dosha's influence. The impact varies with planetary associations and aspects, served by benefic interactions or associations, thereby mitigating the dosha's adverse outcomes .

Jupiter is considered to have the greatest Kendradhipathya dosha due to its dual role as both a benefic and in some charts, a badhaka or a full-fledged maraka when owning the 7th house. For Gemini and Virgo ascendants, this is particularly detrimental because Jupiter becomes malefic by virtue of owning a badhakasthana, exacerbating Kendradhipathya dosha effects. Its placement in the 2nd and 4th houses augments financial, domestic, and career distress. However, when placed in trines (5th, 9th) or upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11), it can mitigate these negative effects, providing auspicious results .

The severity of Kendradhipathya dosha is amplified by the concepts of marakatwa (causing death) and badhakatwa (causing obstruction). Jupiter's Kendradhipathya dosha is enhanced by its badhakatwa, being a badhaka (obstruction) lord, while Venus acquires marakatwa in specific ascendants. Jupiter as a 7th lord can have severe consequences due to its Kendradhipathya dosha alongside badhakatwa and marakatwa, especially in Gemini and Virgo. Similarly, Venus as a kendra lord with marakatwa impacts ascendants like Aries, Scorpio, Cancer, and Aquarius significantly, making its dosha more potent .

The theory of Moola Trikona influences the perception of maleficence in planets with Kendradhipathya dosha by nullifying the defect when a benefic owns an angle that is its Moola Trikona. For example, in Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, Jupiter is not considered a malefic even if its 10th house falls in Moola Trikona. Similarly, Mercury does not become a malefic for Gemini or Virgo when it owns an angle in Moola Trikona. This theory helps to reduce the impacts of Kendradhipathya dosha, emphasizing that the inherent qualities of planets as benefic can override the potential malefic properties imparted by angular lordship .

Kendradhipathya dosha does not affect the results of Raja yogas or Dhana yogas caused by kendra lords. While Kendradhipathya dosha adversely affects personal matters and relationships, it does not impair material situations, which are typically influenced by Raja and Dhana yogas. Therefore, a kendra lord possessing this dosha can still contribute to the formation of beneficial yogas that promote wealth and royal status, remaining effective unless counteracted by other astrological afflictions .

The position of kendra lords in non-cardinal houses influences their outcomes within the context of Kendradhipathya dosha by accentuating their evolutionary impulses. Such positions, while seeming troublesome due to the deep 'churning' of karmic sediments, can promote personal evolution. The influence of kendra lords is intensified when they occupy prominent houses due to their accelerated effect on personal development. Conversely, their placement in houses such as 3, 6, 8, and 12 fosters a churning process, bringing about significant life developments that may appear adverse but facilitate spiritual and personal growth .

Jupiter's placement significantly influences its Kendradhipathya dosha for Gemini and Virgo. If placed in the 3rd house, Jupiter ceases to harm. In the 4th house, it disturbs domestic peace and vocational life. In the 5th house, Jupiter is beneficent, and in the 6th, it promotes career and can be beneficial for marriage. The 8th house brings malefic effects like humiliation and false accusations. The 9th house offers auspicious results like a good spouse and marriage. In the 10th house, Jupiter is helpful for career matters, especially in Gemini with Pisces, giving stability and respect, while the 11th house neutralizes evil power. The dosha's negative influence diminishes in the Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) or trines (5, 9), but is harsh in the 2nd and 4th houses .

Kendradhipathya dosha differs from other common doshas, such as Angaraka Dosha or Kaalasarpa dosha, as it specifically concerns the neutralization of kendra lords' potential benefic results rather than directly causing malefic outcomes. Astrological texts suggest that this dosha shouldn't induce undue alarm because it can be significantly modified by interactions with benefic or malefic planets. It is not absolute, as its effects are relative and variable, often mitigated by planetary associations, aspects, and their positions in charts. As a result, even planets with this dosha can yield positive results depending on circumstances .

The effects of Kendradhipathya dosha on benefic planets can be mitigated when these kendra lords associate with or are aspected by trine lords or upchaya lords (3, 6, 10, 11). If a benefic planet collaborates with 5th, 9th, or 1st house lords, the dosha's effects are neutralized. Additionally, positive influences can occur if these planets avoid placements in malefic houses (3, 6, 8, 12) or receive aspects from benefic planets, reducing the potential adverse outcomes. During the dasa of a kendra lord with such favorable conditions, the malignant tendencies of the dosha are less pronounced .

Kendradhipathya dosha is an affliction that affects natural benefic planets when they become lords of Kendra (angular houses), potentially neutralizing their benefic influences. It selectively impacts Jupiter primarily, followed by Venus, Mercury, and the Moon. The dosha manifests when kendra lords are not associated with or aspected by trine lords, impacting personal matters and relationships rather than material situations. The maleficence of Kendradhipathya dosha depends on the position of the kendra lord in the chart, and it can be neutralized when the kendra lord associates with a trine or upchaya lord. The dosha is exacerbated in the dasa of the kendra lord or in the bhukti of a functional malefic for the ascendant .
