Habitat & Conservation

Monarch Habitats
Monarchs are found in many
areas, from fields, to gardens to
forests and even on the side of
the road. As long as there is
ample vegetation, a monarch will
make its habitat in many places.
Milkweed and
other flower
plants are the
most important
parts of a
monarchs habitat.

plants. Many people plant milkweed
plants just to help Monarchs breed!
The adult butterfly comes from a
chrysalis, but only with great
struggle. This struggle is necessary!
It wrings liquid out of the butterflies
wings, drying the wings out and
allowing butterflies to fly.

Habitat
Loss
When we learn about something we can act on the
knowledge and make choices that incite change.
One of the main issues facing monarchs is habitat fragmentation and loss. Fragmentation means that there
are big gaps in their habitat due to urbanization (city growth) and farming (clearing land). Monarchs are a
plant specific species meaning that they always lay their eggs on the same type of plant and their caterpillars
only eat one type of plant. This plant is milkweed. All areas have native species of milkweed but it is often
seen as a weed (hence the name although the notion of "weeds" is a human invention and all plants actually
have purpose and are beautiful) and therefore eradicated. As milkweed is removed, the monarchs suffer.
Additionally, many people use pesticides and herbicides (herb - grass, non woody plant + cide - kill) which are
toxic and deadly to monarchs.
Humans can slow the decline of monarch populations in several ways:
Plant native species of milkweed on your property
Cease using pesticides and herbicides on your
property
e the Monarc
Sav hs
Petition your town/city/region to plant milkweed
and cease spraying
Help save Grasslands
CREATE A POSTER
On the next page, create an educational poster that
informs readers of ONE way that they can help save the
monarch butterfly. Your poster should include:
A catchy headline
A picture of a monarch butterfly
One actionable step that people can take to help
protect the monarch population.
Draw your own images or use some of the illustrations to
cut out and use as collage items.

Silhouette Habitat
Silhouette: A silhouette is an outline of an object that is created when it is lit from behind
(backlit).
Habitat: The natural home or environment of an animal, or other living thing.
Create Silhouette Habitat Art
Print one of the butterfly silhouettes on the next two pages, and fill in the shape with
a drawing of the type of habitat where they make their home or the food they eat.
This butterfly has an abdomen with lines like
a butterfly egg. It also has flowers in its
wings to show its diet!
