WHAT IS ANALOG MISSION?

One of the methods to investigate scientific, technological and operational

aspects of future human exploratory missions are analog test and analog
mission simulations that allow for a safe, cost-effective, artificial environment
that provides researchers and users with adequate conditions. Analog tests
often use an analog facility to recreate and monitor artificial conditions -
relevant to studies on human presence in space. Simulating space activities
and mission conditions inside an analog facility provide a more controlled
environment and reproducibility of research. LunAres Research Station
focuses on human factor studies, offering research in full isolation from the
external environment. The conditions inside the facility can be monitored and
controlled creating a great amount of data of interior telemetry. A unique
characteristics of LunAres is the isolated hall for Extravehicular activity (EVA)
simulation. We would like to invite young researchers and students to join the
LunAres project and establish together a great collaboration between
institutions.

RESEARCH STATION

LunAres Research Station is an analog facility for crewed space mission

simulation located in Poland. LunAres was built in 2017 and was the first of its
kind project in Europe. The facility offers full isolated mission simulation
allowing for complex research on the future long duration missions.

The general objective of LunAres is to create a research platform to support

scientific and technological development in crewed space exploration. The
broad range of specialists are involved in the study from fields like extreme
medicine, psychology, biotechnology, robotics and engineering, sociology,
architecture. The possible observation and control of the indoor environment,
as well as telemetry of the crew's physical and psychological states, provide
large quantities of data for complex studies.

Inside the base research focused on human factors in crewed space missions
as well as testing of sustainable technologies is conducted. The base is fully
isolated from the environment including 250 square meters of EVA area. The
infrastructure of the station allows for constant monitoring of the health and
behaviors of the crew. LunAres research station is a unique facility that can be
beneficial for science, business and educational efforts.

The general objective of LunAres is to create a research platform to support

scientific and technological development in crewed space exploration. The
broad range of specialists are involved in the study from fields like extreme
medicine, psychology, biotechnology, robotics and engineering, sociology,
architecture.

Conducted research focuses on human factors in crewed space missions as

well as testing of sustainable and innovative technologies. The base is fully
isolated from the environment including 250 square meters of EVA area.

Our station consists of two areas: Habitat, built with containers, and EVA area
located in the hangar. The EVA terrain is connected to the rest of the station
via an airlock. The airlock is used by astronauts to transfer in and out of the
habitat during the outdoor activity simulation. LunAres provides a crew with
several functions in individual modules. The organization of modules is
planned in the way to provide adjacency of quite functions, requiring water
supply or dirty spaces.

ISOLATION REQUIREMENTS

The mission will be under full isolation, which means that the 6 - 8 analog
astronauts are on their own, isolated from contact with other people for the
whole mission duration. The acceptable line of communication will be via
emails. The analog astronauts should not make phone calls, use social media
and communicators or have access to media news. In case of emergency
situations only, the fast and direct contact to emergency contacts, mission
control, mission doctor is allowed. It is requested for the crew not to open any
exit door or window if not necessary. Leaving the habitat can result in some
experiments failure or limitation.

EXTRAVEHICULAR ACTIVITY

The key feature of the LunAres Research Station is the Extravehicular Activity
terrain simulating space environment. It is built inside a nuclear bunker
hangar connected to the rest of the habitat via an airlock. The airlock is used
by astronauts to transfer in and out of the habitat. It is equipped with a
lighting and automatic system to simulate de- and pressurization as well as
decontamination. The EVA area is equipped with monitoring and technical
infrastructure allowing for gathering in-depth visual data via cameras located
around the hangar and devices carried by astronauts or rovers. The diverse
terrain is built with various grain-sized basaltic rocks and silica sand and silt.
Space allows for astronauts’ accessories testing and prototyping as well as
procedures development.

RESEARCH

The LunAres habitat is a facility that provides an extensive range of research

opportunities. It was created with the aim of widening the knowledge about
the influence of isolation and confinement on human crew as well as to
provide conditions for technology testing. The habitat specificity allows for
monitoring most of the environmental parameters and some of the most
important human factor data.

Habitat in isolation studies is a facility equipped with a complete technical

and technological infrastructure that enables a group of people to live and
properly function in isolation for a defined limited time. The area needs to
fulfill all basic needs of the crew and enable implementation of missions
specific tasks. Our habitat space is divided into small compartments handling
those intrinsic functions. The facility consists of 8 modules including
dormitory, kitchen, gym, sanitary module, biolab, workshop, operations and
atrium. There is also an EVA area with dedicated infrastructure.

PROJECTS

LunAres habitat facilitates the space and conditions for technology

development and testing. The analog mission is a multifactorial process
including determined living conditions and schedule, technical tasks and
problem solving challenges. The character of this project favors creativity and
innovation. Since the analog missions simulate space sojourns the technology
development element plays a big role during the isolation period. Analog
astronauts are encouraged to implement their ideas but they also make a
great use of existing and uprising technology. LunAres habitat conditions and
infrastructure enable proceeding research in multiple scientific areas with the
special emphasis on human factor, logistics and intelligent habitat systems.

Main and most popular topics include:

Space and extreme medicine
Psychology and sociology
Environment telemetry and analog mission conditions investigation
Human-robot interaction investigation
Life-support system studies
Resources management
Geology and EVA procedures development
Safety procedures development
Astronaut accessories creation, prototyping, testing
Media and resources management systems
Environment data integration systems
Hydroponics and aeroponics systems

Projects are not limited to the topics listed above.
