Q1. “Communication is the process of sending and receiving information”.

In the light of
this statement, explain the communication process with the help of a diagram. (250-300
words)

Q2. Identify the components of communication in terms of Sender, Receiver, Message,


Medium, Channel and Feedback in following communication situations:

1. Ramesh books a room in a hotel for three days in another city via telephone. He
receives an e-mail of confirmation from the hotel Manager.
2. Geeta asks her co-passenger about the time the bus would take to reach its destination.
The co-passenger does not answer and keeps looking out of the window.
3. The musician plays an instrumental music in a concert and is appreciated by a big
round of applause.
4. A passenger fills a cancellation form, submits it at the reservation counter and gets a
refund from the booking clerk.
5. The teacher asks a group of students who are misbehaving to leave the class but
the students continue talking.
6. A student reads the notice board regarding the examination fees. He pays the fee to
the cashier who remits it to the University.
7. Ramesh sends an application letter for the post of Junior engineer and receives a call
for the interview.

Q3. Identify the communication barriers in the following situations:


1. “This room is terrible to work in. I am able to hear everyone around and I can’t
concentrate.”
2. “I don’t agree with you. I have specialized in this subject and have been frequently
invited to deliver talks on this. I can’t be wrong.”
3. Kishanlal never made mistakes in his accounts and was a very sincere worker. The
manager was puzzled when Kishanlal could not work with the new calculating machine
and remained absent from work.
4. The lectures in the college had to be suspended because of the loud music played by the
winning political party.
5. The subordinates remained silent when the chairman asked them to give their opinions on
the new proposal
6. The music concert had to be stopped due to electric failure.
7. Sir Winston Churchill in his book “The Second World War” gives us a differently
understood connotations of a word causing confusion.
When the American & British Chiefs of staff met, the British brought in a memo and
propose that they should table it, by which they meant it should be discussed right
away. The Americans protested that the matter was too important to be tabled by which
they meant shelved and the argument grew quite heated till the members realised they
all wanted the same thing

Q4. List two situations which could occur in your personal life where you would choose to
speak rather than write. Explain the reasons for your choice.

Q5. Read the situation given below and answer the question that follows:

Here is Ramesh. He is the speaker for the student’s gathering. He sits on the
dais with drooping shoulders and bent head, busy going through some papers.
He is impeccably dressed in a smart pin- striped shirt, matching tie and lapel
pin. Frowning he keeps tapping his fingers on the table, looks at his watch
repeatedly and is waiting to be introduced. He is impatient- he has to attend an
important business meeting. At last, the announcement: Mr. Ramesh, the
speaker……..
Ramesh smiles, nods his head in greeting and walks briskly to the mike. He has
a prepared speech which he reads out in a loud, clear voice. His diction of tone
is good, looking down at his notes, seldom looking at the audience. The
audience is restless, shifting in their chairs, whispering and talking among
themselves. Suddenly there is a hushed silence; the secretary is giving the vote
of thanks. The speaker must have finished some time back.

Q. Analyse Ramesh’s non- verbal behavior and identify positive & negative
behavior, as mentioned in the above case study.
