DW Plugs - Running / setting
ŸRun in hole – the slips slide along the tubing.
Note not to be used on plastic coated tubing's
Schlumberger Private
ŸWhen target depth is reached pull up then jar
up
ŸThe taper forces the slips to grip the tubing
wall
ŸContinued jarring up shears the pins, which fix
the mandrel body and the taper together

DW Plugs – Setting / pulling
ŸThe body moves up and the lower conical
shoulder expands the packing
ŸFurther upward jarring shears the pins in the
Schlumberger Private
running tool – pull out of the well – do not sit
down, it may cause the lock to release
ŸAttach the correct prong to the RB
ŸThe core strikes the mandrel, jar down to
release the taper behind the slips
ŸDo not use RS as core is too long and skirt will
contact body tightening the lock

DD Plugs
ŸDesigned to locate, lock and seal various flow
control devices in the collar recess of API EU
and API NU tubing
Schlumberger Private
ŸHold pressure from above or below – 5000psi
differential
ŸLarger bore (ID) provides a greater flow area
ŸCannot be set in tubing without collar recess
ŸWill not pass nipple of same nominal size range

DD Plugs - preparation
ŸThe D collar lock is run using a D running tool
ŸPin the running tool so that the collet is
Schlumberger Private
expanded below the locking sleeve in the recess
in the D collar lock
ŸShear stock selection should be limited to
either brass or steel depending on setting depth
and forces available.
ŸAluminum must not be used

DD Plugs – running
ŸRIH and stop approximately one joint above
target depth
Schlumberger Private
ŸPull up until a collar is located, not more than
200lbs, note depth, this is to ensure that target
depth is not passed
Ÿtap down to release and run 10ft below the
desired collar recess
ŸPull up until recess is encountered and place
approximately 300lbs on the wire

DD Plugs – setting
ŸClose the jars slowly without jarring down
ŸJar up hard to expand the element and fully
Schlumberger Private
lock the collet
ŸPrior to shearing the pin in the running tool,
jar down slightly to check the lock is set. If the
lock moves down repeat the setting process
ŸIf there is no down movement, jar up until the
pin is sheared and the running tool released

DD Plugs – pulling
ŸPulling tool – GRL + Equalizing prong
ŸChoose prong to match assembly
Schlumberger Private
ŸAs the GRL engage the prong activates the
equalizing device – WAIT FOR EQUALIZATION
ŸJar down – the extended core of the GRL
pushes the locking sleeve down releasing the
dogs
ŸPick up and pull out of hole

DD Plugs – G element
ŸThe D collar lock uses the G element
ŸBy adjusting the number of spacers beneath
Schlumberger Private
the expander element, the amount of
expansion can be controlled to seal in various
tubing weights
ŸThese rings must be on the element side of
the O rings
ŸWell pressure is allowed to act behind the
element to energize the seal

Nipple Plugs
ŸThree types of landing nipple plugs
ŸSelective – due to nipple profile utilizing S
Schlumberger Private
locks
ŸSelective – due to the running tool utilizing
the X and R locks
ŸNo go or Non-selective – due to the
restriction in the landing nipple utilizing XN
and RN locks

S Lock Plugs
ŸEach nipple has a different profile
ŸNipples start with the S-1 at the bottom and
Schlumberger Private
an S-5 near the surface
ŸKeys to match the target nipple profile must
be installed on the lock
ŸKeys will not match the wrong nipple profile
preventing locating in the wrong nipple

X Lock Plugs
ŸThis system utilizes identical nipples in each
respective tubing size
Schlumberger Private
ŸThe operator has to select the target nipple
with the use of a selective running tool
ŸUses V packing seal arrangement
ŸHolds pressure from both directions (R and
RN are the high pressure locks available)
ŸCan be set in the X profile of sliding doors

CR – slide 15
XN Lock Plugs
ŸXN lock is the X lock with the keys changed
ŸAll other components are identical including
Schlumberger Private
running and pulling tools
ŸThe OD of the equalizing assembly is too
large to pass the nogo ID so it serves as a
positive stop to locate the nipple keys
ŸNipples reduce in ID going down the
completion – i.e. the string tapers

Lock / Plug identification
ŸX lock has 90° key
ŸXN lock has 45° key
Schlumberger Private
ŸThe higher pressure
versions have more key
surface area – an extra
profile
ŸR lock has 2 x 90° keys
ŸRN lock has 2 x 45° keys

Lock operation
ŸThe lock consists of 10 pieces, the fishing neck,
expander mandrel, inner sleeve, 3 x keys, 3 x leaf
springs and the lock body.
Schlumberger Private
ŸClosing the expander mandrel acts on the leaf springs
which push the keys out. The mandrel then moves
behind the keys securing the keys in place
ŸThe leaf spring exert on out force on the keys during
selective setting
ŸThe inner sleeve has small holes to allow for fluid
bypass when closing the lock

Holding the expander mandrel closed
ŸOnce the lock is set its integrity
must be tested
Schlumberger Private
ŸPressure test from above and
pressure bleed off test
ŸOnce pressure is bleed off the
well pressure lifts the plug up
causing the keys to contact the 45°
shoulders
ŸThe keys then push in and lock the
expander because of the serrations

X-line Running Tool
ŸThis tool has two running positions and must be
manually set at surface
Schlumberger Private
ŸSelective – when setting in any profile except
the top one or a nogo (XN) nipple
ŸNon-selective - used when setting the device
in the top nipple or a nogo nipple (XN)
ŸAttached to the device by a brass shear pin
and retainer dogs in the device FN

X-line Running Tool
ŸThe shear pin in the running tool (normally
steel) allows for the device to be aligned before
shearing and allowing the FN to close
Schlumberger Private
ŸLocator dogs (with tungsten inserts) locate the
nipple when run in the selective mode
ŸLug segments lock the core to main body
preventing movement. In this mode (selective)
the the setting pin cannot be sheared and the FN
cannot close

R series equipment
ŸR series lock designed for higher pressure
ŸWall thickness difference, hence running tool
Schlumberger Private
has slight size differences
ŸIdentical procedures as X series to set and pull
ŸThe same equalizing devices available
Ÿ Same pulling tool used
ŸX/XN lock components not interchangeable
with R/RN lock

Running in non-selective mode
ŸRun in the well, take PW above target nipple
ŸSet down and find depth, jar down gently to enter V packings
Schlumberger Private
into seal bore – 4 to 6 times
Ÿ Increase jarring impacts, the nogo shoulder prevents the tool
passing and aligns the keys with the profile.
ŸThe top pin shears and the FN closes, take over-pull to ensure
device locked (2-300lbs)
ŸJar up to shear lower (brass) pin, perform PW weight when
pulling out
N
NW
NE
W
SW
S SE
CR – slide 25
Running in selective mode
ŸRun in the well, take PW above first nipple, care must be take
not to trip tool
ŸSit down on first nipple, jar down to pass through, repeat
Schlumberger Private
process until target nipple is reached (do not over-pull when
opening jars to jar down – will trip tool)
ŸJar through target nipple and stop 10’ through, pick slowly,
not depth of over-pull, continue to pick up (approx 2-300lbs)
ŸThis operation changes the tool to non-selective mode, you
must pull the assembly completely back through target nipple
ŸContinue to set as per non-selective mode

Recovery of the X Series Lock
ŸOtis recommend that X Series plugs are pulled
using a GR
Schlumberger Private
ŸBecause of the key serrations holding the
expander mandrel, jarring down to release is
required
ŸOnce keys are loose, pick up to open lock neck,
jar up to overcome packing friction
ŸSometimes an over-pull is sufficient to release
the plug from the landing nipple
