Title of PeTa: Project LIFE (Lourdesians’ Innovation for the Environment):

From Waste to Wonder: Transforming Plastic Waste into Eco-Bricks for Sustainable
Communities
Goal:
The project aims to integrate social studies and science by having students create eco-bricks
from collected household and community plastic waste. In the context of chemistry, students will
analyze the chemical composition of plastics, highlighting their environmental impact.
Specifically, the goal of this task is for the students to:

1. Identify and classify plastics and other non-biodegradable waste based on their chemical
properties and environmental effects.
2. Promote responsible waste segregation and disposal for eco-brick production.
3. Encourage sustainable solutions to plastic pollution through eco-bricks in community-based
projects.

Role:

As environmental advocates and waste management specialists, students will research the
chemical composition of various plastics, collect plastic waste, and repurpose it into eco-bricks.
Their role includes educating the community by creating the project proposal on the
environmental effects of these plastics and how eco-bricks can be used for sustainable projects.
Additionally, they will document the types of plastics collected, analyze their chemical
properties, and propose ways to mitigate their environmental impact.

Audience:
The eco-bricks will be presented to the subject teacher, then used in a community project, such
as constructing garden walls or benches. Students will document the process of collecting
different types of plastics, including proper methods for washing and segregating them before
placing them in bottles. This documentation will highlight the types of plastics, their chemical
composition, and their environmental impact.
Situation:

Single-use plastics are common in households, often discarded without regard for their long-
term impact on the environment. These plastics, primarily made of organic compounds like
polymers, can take centuries to decompose. This project aligns with the goals of "Nurturing
Responsible Stewardship" and "Ecological Conversion," encouraging students to creatively
repurpose waste through eco-bricking, thus contributing to sustainable living.

Product/Performance:

Students will create eco-bricks by tightly packing clean, dry, non-biodegradable waste materials
into plastic bottles. They will also develop a documentation that include:

 The chemical composition of the plastics used.

 Environmental hazards associated with improper disposal.
 Step-by-step instructions for creating eco-bricks.
 The benefits of eco-bricks as a sustainable solution to plastic pollution.

The final products—eco-bricks and brochures—will be used in community projects and

presented during a batch environmental seminar. The output will be graded using specific
rubrics.

Guidelines/Procedures:

A. The performance task will be done in a group. (Compilation of individual task will be in the
project proposal)

B. Students, as waste management specialists, will collect and repurpose plastics from their
households and the community. The students will create a documentation containing the
following:

1. A detailed description of the types of plastics collected (e.g., PET, HDPE) and their chemical
composition.
2. The environmental hazards posed by these plastics.
3. Instructions on how to create eco-bricks.
4. The benefits of using eco-bricks in community projects and for sustainable living.

C. For the final product, the eco-bricks should adhere to these guidelines:

 Use a clean plastic bottle (e.g., 1.5L) filled with tightly packed, cleaned, and dried plastic
waste.
 The procedure part of project proposal must be formatted as formal on a designated
format.

1) Information on the types of plastics collected and their chemical properties.

2) Step-by-step instructions for creating eco-bricks and the environmental benefits of using
eco-bricks in the community.

Integration into Social Studies:

The final output of this project will be a comprehensive proposal that integrates both social
studies and science. The Social Studies component will focus on proposing sustainable
community projects using eco-bricks, while the Science component will emphasize the chemical
properties of plastics and their environmental effects. The procedure will include the following
steps:

1. Students will collect plastic waste from their households and ensure it is clean, dry, and free
of any food residues before repurposing it into eco-bricks.
2. Before placing the plastics into the container, students must take a photograph of each type
of plastic, identify its chemical composition, and analyze its potential environmental impact.
3. For each type of plastic, students must document the chemical properties and answer the
following question:
What is the environmental effect of this plastic's chemical composition?

Date of Presentation to the Students: October 16, 2024

Date of Submission of Final Output: November 26, 2024
