GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: The Lord is our light and our salvation; whom shall we fear?
All: The Lord is the stronghold of our life; of whom shall we be afraid?
One: We seek your face, O Lord. Do not hide your face from us!
All: Do not forsake us, O God of our salvation!
One: Make us strong, and let our hearts take courage.
All: We wait for the Lord. Let us worship God!
Prayer of Adoration
Holy God, though we continue to stumble, you have made us citizens of
heaven. Through Christ you have claimed us and transformed us by your
glory. How wonderful you are, O God! By the power of your Spirit, empower
us to steadfast faithfulness as your beloved children. Amen.

*Hymn
For the Beauty of the Earth
For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies,
Refrain
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.
For the wonder of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon, and stars of light,
refrain
For the joy of ear and eye,
For the heart and mind’s delight,
For the mystic harmony
Linking sense to sound and sight,
refrain
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild,
refrain
For Thy Church, that evermore
Lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Her pure sacrifice of love,

Prayer of Confession
God of compassion, We are creatures who seek our own comfort. We
confess that we prefer our own plans to your purposes. We shrink from
costly discipleship and put our own interests first. Forgive our fleeting
commitment and the times we have indulged our own complaints. Have
mercy on us. Inspire us with the energy to do your will and serve our
neighbors in the example of Christ, your Son and our Lord.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Friends in Christ, while it is true that we have all sinned, it is a greater
truth that we are forgiven through God’s love poured out in Jesus Christ.
To all who humbly seek the mercy of God I say, in Jesus Christ our sin
is forgiven Be at peace with God, with yourself, and with one another.
All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Psalm 27
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the
stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to
devour my flesh— my adversaries and foes— they shall stumble and fall. 3
Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up
against me, yet I will be confident. 4 One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek
after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty
of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the
4
day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high
on a rock. 6 Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I
will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to
the Lord. 7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! 8
“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, Lord, do I seek. 9 Do not hide
your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been
my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! 10 If my
father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up. 11 Teach me your way,
O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 12 Do not give me
up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and
they are breathing out violence. 13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the
Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart
take courage; wait for the Lord!
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

Reading from the New Testament

Philippians 3:17—4:1
Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according
to the example you have in us. 18 For many live as enemies of the cross of
Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their
end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their
minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from
there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will transform
the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by
the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. 4:1
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown,
stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

I Need Thee Every Hour
I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like thine can peace afford.
Refrain
I need thee, O I need thee, every hour I need thee!
O bless me now, my Savior—I come to thee!
I need thee every hour; stay thou near by;
temptations lose their power when thou art nigh.
refrain
I need thee every hour; teach me thy will,
and thy rich promises in me fulfill.
refrain
I need thee every hour, Most Holy One;
O make me thine indeed, thou blessed Son.
refrain
Reading from the Gospel
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here,
for Herod wants to kill you.” 32 He said to them, “Go and tell that fox for me,
‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and
on the third day I finish my work. 33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must
be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of
Jerusalem.’ 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones
those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together
as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 35 See,
your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes
when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen
*Hymn
Great Is the Lord
Great is the Lord; he is holy and just,
by his power we trust in his love.
Great is the Lord; he is faithful and true,
by his mercy he proves he is love.
Great is the Lord, and worthy of glory!
Great is the Lord, and worthy of praise!
Great is the Lord!
Now lift up you voice; now lift up your voice:
Great is the Lord! Great is the Lord!

Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily
bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the Kingdom, and the
power and the glory, forever. AMEN!
GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Blest Be the Tie That Binds
Blest be the tie that binds
our hearts in Christian love.
The fellowship of kindred minds
is like to that above.
Before our Father's throne
we pour our ardent prayers.
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
our comforts and our cares.
We share our mutual woes;
our mutual burdens bear.
And often for each other flows
the sympathizing tear.
When we are called to part,
it gives us inward pain;
but we shall still be joined in heart,
and hope to meet again.
From sorrow, toil, and pain,
and sin we shall be free;
and perfect love and friendship reign
through all eternity.
Benediction
