I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Differentiate active and passive voice;


b. Identify the voice of the verb in each sentence;
c. Rewrite the sentence changing the voice from active to passive voice;
d. Appreciate the lesson by showing active participation of the students towards the lesson.

So what are the three simple tenses of the verb?

Yes (student name) The Simple Past Tense, Simple Present Tense
and Simple Future tense.
What is Simple Past Tense, Simple Present Tense
and Simple Future tense?
Anyone from the class? Students raise her/his hand.
Yes miss? Simple Past Tense Simple past tense is used to
talk about a completed action.
Simple Present Tense Simple Present Tense
indicates that an action is in present. Generally, it
is used to describe actions that are factual or
habitual things that occur in the present but not
necessarily happening right now. And lastly,
Simple Future Tense Simple future tense
indicates that an action is in the future.

C. LESSON PROPER

Well students, today we will talk and learn about


Active and Passive Voices.

Voice is the quality of a verb that shows whether the Listening


subjects are the doer or receiver of the action.

Active Voice
Active voice is used to indicate that the subject of
the sentence is the doer of the action
Let’s start with a very simple sentence.
S V O
The boy kicked the ball.
 In the following sentences, note the form of
the verb when the subject is the doer of the
action.

EXAMPLE:
A student wrote the winning essay.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
The chef prepared a delicious meal.
What are the subjects in the sentences?
Alexander Graham
Bell, Chef
Correct. Observe that the subjects’ students,
Alexander, Graham Bell, and Chef are the doers of
the action.
What are the verbs used? wrote, invented, prepared

Very good! Those verbs are transitive verb with

objects, thus when the subject of the sentence does

Passive Voice
The passive voice is created when the subjects is

Very good! Now, study the following sentences:

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham

In each sentence above, observe that the subjects
are the receiver instead of being the doer of the
action.
Note that the form of the verb when the subjects is
the receiver, not the doer of the action is made up of
was+ past participle of the verb.
Thus if the subjects is acted upon, the verb is in the
passive voice.
Let us have an exercise.
Identify the voice of the verb in each sentence.
