Article 30 – Heart Chakra (Part 1)

✒ Jitendra Patwari

The Heart Chakra: A Symphony of Love

As we continue our journey through the chakras, we arrive at a pivotal and beloved
destination—the heart chakra, cherished by poets, dreamers, and lovers alike. In this
delicate garden where love blooms eternally, we embark on a profound journey of
self-discovery. Here, this radiant energy centre invites us to explore the depths of
compassion, forgiveness, and the essence of relationships. As we breathe deeply,
we begin to uncover the love that beats ceaselessly within our hearts. In this
moment, let us embrace the beauty of our sensitivity and open our hearts to the
transformative power of love, reminding ourselves of the timeless verse: "Love is the
greatest treasure, filling the mind with its boundless beauty."

Alternate Names, Location, Colour,

Element, and Seed Mantra
Also known as the Anahata Chakra, the heart chakra serves as a bridge connecting
the lower three chakras to the upper three. Located near the heart, in the chest area,
it corresponds to the element of air— which also aligns with Ayurveda, where heart-
related ailments are often linked to disturbances in the air element as air resides
most in our body in the lungs, right near the chest. The heart chakra's colour is a
vibrant green, much like the earth draped in a fresh blanket after rain. As for its seed
mantra, we find resonance in the sound "Yam."

The Heart Chakra of the Earth

Interestingly, the Earth has its own heart

chakra, located along a powerful ley line
that passes through Glastonbury in
Britain. For this reason, those who are
attuned to cosmic energy or who seek to
harness it, especially healers and energy
workers, are drawn to this sacred site from
across the world.
Associated Physical Organs and Endocrine Gland

Turning to the physical body, the heart chakra is closely associated with the thymus
gland, which plays a crucial role in regulating our immune system. Additionally, this
chakra governs the circulatory system and influences the functioning of the heart,
lungs, chest, and hands.

Significance and Characteristics of the Chakra

If the preceding chakras are balanced, the journey continues seamlessly. The root
chakra’s earth element would have brought stability, grounding us firmly. The sacral
chakra’s water element would have sparked creativity, and the solar chakra’s fire
element would have directed this creativity towards productive action. Once this "fire
in the belly" has sparked change, the air element in the heart chakra propels it
further, filling everything with emotions like love, compassion, and joy. Air, much like
love itself, is omnipresent — everywhere and in everything.
Even Bollywood, the Hindi film industry, has long had a fascination with the heart
chakra. From Rekha’s famous line, “Dil Chij Kya Hai, Jaan Lijie,” to Amitabh
Bachchan’s poetic musings, “Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Me Khayal Aata Hai,” and the
evergreen Dilip Kumar’s passionate declaration, “Dil Tadap Tadap Ke Kah Raha Hai,
Aa Bhi Jaa,” the heart has always been at the centre of emotion. In more recent
times, Shah Rukh Khan playfully admits, “Dil To Pagal Hai.” Whether we are stuck in
the whirlpool of love, as portrayed in "Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar," or singing about
our beloved, as Shammi Kapoor did in Brahmachari, "Dil Ke Zarokhe Me Tujko
Bithakr," Bollywood reveals a timeless truth: the heart chakra is where all emotions—
bitter and sweet—converge. Like an overflowing glass, the heart sometimes spills its
emotions, which we often call “a heart overflowing with emotions.”
Moving from Bollywood to Hollywood, the story remains the same. Hollywood’s
timeless stories also reflect the heart’s deep emotions. Whether it's the romance of
Rose and Jack from Titanic or the poetic sadness of Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca, the
heart remains the core of human experience. Remember Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack
telling Rose, “You jump, I jump”? Or Julia Roberts in Notting Hill admitting, “I’m just a
girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her”? These tender moments
highlight the heart’s powerful voice. Similarly, Ryan Gosling’s Noah in The Notebook
exclaims, “It wasn’t over, it still isn’t over!”—a passionate declaration straight from
the heart. And even in Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart’s Rick memorably states,
“Here’s looking at you, kid,” reminding us how the heart’s emotions leave lasting
imprints on our souls.
The Heart Chakra’s Vulnerability

Like the stories we’ve just explored, the heart chakra is profoundly vulnerable. At any
age, even at 70, one cancontents fall deeply in love. However, the heart becomes
more fragile over time, and the risk of emotional wounds only increases. After
enduring many blows, the heart, being delicate, may break easily—sometimes more
than once. Heartbreaks, both emotional and physical, can strike multiple times,
potentially leading to serious conditions such as heart attacks.

The Heart Chakra’s Capacity

Despite its fragility, the heart chakra possesses immense capacity. It stores
countless memories, and what we choose to fill it with defines us. When we fill it with
love, we exude love. Conversely, once we fill it with bitterness, it can turn toxic. What
we store will inevitably spill out, influencing how we relate to the world. Our social
acceptance often hinges on the content of our hearts. For instance, some people
jokingly describe their spouse as their “bitter half” rather than their “better half.” One
colleague of mine, unfortunately, made such an introduction truthfully, and sadly, his
bitter wife underwent open-heart surgery at just 40. Tragically, she is no longer with
us, illustrating how storing toxic memories can poison the heart chakra. What we
sow, we shall reap—that is nature’s law; action begets reaction—that is the law of
science; what we give, we receive back manifold—that is the law of the spiritual
world.

The Profound Importance of This Chakra

This chakra holds a unique significance - it is the only one that, when completely
blocked, can cause the entire chakra system to shut down. When this happens,
friends and family often gather to say their final farewells. Moreover, in such
moments, the heart chakra of the spouse may also be affected, leading to what is
known as "Broken Heart Syndrome."
Love—whether romantic or platonic—begins with this chakra. It is also the seat of
self-love. A balanced heart chakra fosters respect for oneself and others, serving as
the healing centre of the body, as feelings of forgiveness originate here.
Compassion, empathy, and the ability to understand others’ emotions are born from
this chakra. When fully developed, these qualities create a magnetic personality,
naturally drawing others in.

As we conclude this article, let us remember the Heart Chakra’s profound impact on
our lives. By nurturing this vital energy centre, we can cultivate love, compassion,
and forgiveness, fostering harmonious relationships and a sense of inner peace. In
the next article, we will explore the characteristics of an imbalanced heart chakra, its
effects on the body and mind, and how to identify whether your heart chakra is
underactive or overactive. These insights will provide valuable guidance for your
continued journey of self-discovery.
