Task 1 - Project Requirements

Analysis

a) Key Requirements for the LAN Design

1. Number of Employees: 150 employees, with potential growth to 300.

2. Types of Devices:
o Desktop computers for software developers and engineers.
o Laptops for management and key personnel.
o Unmanaged switch, Management switch, and router for internal connection and
outer connection.
o Network printers.
o Hardware Firewall for security support.
o Video conferencing equipment ( Desktop screen, Microphone and speaker,
Camera) in conference rooms.
o Servers for server room.
o Mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) for flexible working.
3. Specific Needs of Different Departments:
o Development Department: High-speed internet, access to development servers,
and collaboration tools.
o Finance Department: Secure access to financial data and applications.
o HR Department: Secure access to employee records and HR management
systems.
o Management Department: Reliable video conferencing and communication
tools.

b) Analysis of Growth Plans and Scalability Requirements

1. Growth Plans: The company plans to expand its workforce to 300 employees. The
network must be scalable to accommodate this growth.
2. Expected Network Traffic: High-bandwidth applications and services include:
o Software development tools and repositories.
o Video conferencing and VoIP services.
o Large file transfers for software testing and deployment.
o Cloud-based applications and services.
3. Impact on Network Design:
o High-Speed Internet: Ensure sufficient bandwidth to support high-bandwidth
applications.
o Scalability: Use modular network components that can be easily upgraded or
expanded.
o Redundancy: Implement redundant connections and failover mechanisms to
ensure continuous service.
Task 2 - Network Topology Design

a) Floor Plan Layout

1. Placement of Devices:
o Open-plan Workspaces: Desktop computers for developers and engineers.
o Private Offices: Laptops and docking stations for management.
o Conference Rooms: Video conferencing equipment.
o Server Room: Servers, storage devices, and network equipment.
o Common Areas: Wi-Fi access points for mobile devices.
2. Locations of Switches, Routers, and Access Points:
o Switches: Placed in strategic locations on each floor to connect devices.
o Routers: Centralized in the server room for efficient routing.
o Access Points: Distributed throughout the building to ensure strong Wi-Fi
coverage.

b) Network Topology

1. Logical Network Topology:

o Core Layer: High-performance core switches in the server room.
o Distribution Layer: Switches on each floor to connect devices to the core layer.
o Access Layer: Access points and edge switches for end-user devices.
