INTRODUCTION
● 'The Adventure ' is a chapter written by famous writer Jayant
Narlikar.
● The story is around a historical event, and the protagonist is
Gangadharpant. Jayant Narlikar's narrative teaches us how
Gangadharpant, Professor Gaitonde, travels through time. The
professor wonders what would have happened to India if the
Marathas had not permitted the East India Company to stay in
Mumbai.
● The chapter encourages readers to reflect on their own adventurous
spirit and the lessons learned from personal experiences.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jayant Narlikar was born on July 19, 1938 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra and
received his early education in the campus of Banaras Hindu University
(BHU), where his father Vishnu Vasudeva Narlikar was Professor and
Head of the Mathematics Department. His mother Sumati Narlikar was a
Sanskrit scholar.

THEME AND MESSAGE
● The Adventure" is a story that looks at the idea of parallel worlds. It
asks if there are other worlds out there that are very different from
our own or not. The story also looks at the ideas of free will and fate.

● Professor Gaitonde thinks that this adventure was meant to happen
to him. He thinks it helped him learn more about himself and the
world around him. The story shows us that we should never take the
world we live in for granted. There are other worlds, and we should
be glad to live in the one we do.
CHARACTER SKETCH
● Professor Gaitonde - Historian. He is a great orator and has
delivered many speeches. He is quite a passionate researcher and
has a strong personality.He leaves no stone unturned to find the
truth behind the battle of Panipat and the conflicting thoughts about
it. He is patient enough to listen to others' versions of history and
understands things from every possible angle.
● Rajendra Deshpande- A good friend of Professor Gaitonde. He tries
to solve the confusion of Professor Gaitonde by taking practical
examples of Quantum Theory and Catastrophe Theory.
SUMMARY
The Adventure is a short story written by Indian writer Jayant Narlikar. He
talks about the theory of existence of parallel worlds through storytelling.
The main character Professor Gaitonde is an academician in the field of
history. He is supposed to present a presidential address on how the
history of India would have changed if the Marathas had won the Battle of
Panipat. He immerses himself in thoughts - trying to assess the
probabilities of an alternative course of history and meets with an accident.
He wakes up to find himself subject to a new reality where he finds that the
Marathas had really won the battle and the British were unsuccessful in
enslaving the Indians. He relates his experience to his friend Rajendra
Despande who looks at it as a possible execution of psychological trickery
in Gaitonde's mind. But upon giving a proof of his visit to another world,
Professor Gaitonde puts Rajendra in doubt. Rajendra analyses and
speculates every detail of the event to conclude that Gaitonde might have
made a transition into another parallel world, and then returned to his

original world, and that the Battle of Panipat was the point of bifurcation in
the worlds.
