I. Read the following text.
1. Hippocrates was a Greek physician born in 460 BC on the island of Cos in Greece. He became known
as the founder of medicine and was regarded as one of the greatest physicians of his time. He based his
medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body.
2. Hippocrates believed that illness could be explained through body signs (fever, for example, or
swellings) and through understanding causes. He rejected the views of his time that illnesses were
caused by evil spirits when they possessed people.
3. Hippocrates also believed that the body must be treated as a whole and not just as a series of parts.
The natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and cleanliness were also very important.
4. He was, we know, one of the first people to note that there were differences in the way people
experienced disease. He observed that there were individual differences in the severity of disease
symptoms and that some individuals were better able to cope with their disease and illness than others. It
is believed that he was among the first physicians to say that thoughts, ideas and feelings come from the
brain and not the heart as others of his time believed.
5. Hippocrates is credited with writing a code of ethics called the Hippocratic Oath. The Hippocratic
oath is a pledge historically recited by physicians, who in reading the text, agree to uphold a specific
