Artificial intelligence is intelligence that is added to a system that can be regulated in a scientific context.
Students usually use the media to improve their English skills with a variety of mobile applications in
mastering effective and critical English in order to gain a better understanding of English reading skills.
The ability to comprehend reading material is a crucial skill for academic and professional success, yet
many students struggle with it, negatively impacting their academic performance. It has been proved
that artificial intelligence technology can bring revolutionary influence to English learning efficiency.
However, because artificial intelligence technology is a new product of the times, it brings both positive
and negative effects to English learning.
The term "artificial intelligence" was made in 1956, according to John McCarthy artificial intelligence is,
in general, 'the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer
programs'.
The intention for developing machines that replicate human intelligence dates back to early times, when
stories and myths about automatons and intelligent machinery circulated. But it wasnt until the first
electronic computers were created in the middle of the 20th century that their actual potential was
examined.
Due to the rule-centric structure of early AI systems, funding increased and more complex systems were
developed in the 1970s and 1980s. These days, machine learning, hardware, and algorithmic
advancements are bringing artificial intelligence (AI) back to life.
Researchers were able to evolve learning algorithms and construct the groundwork for modern artificial
intelligence as early as the 1990s thanks to developments in computing power and the availability of
immense quantities of data. Due in large part to the advancements in deep learning, that utilizes layered
artificial neural networks to process and interpret complex data structures, this technology has grown
exponentially in recent years. Natural language processing, autonomous systems, and image and speech
recognition are just a few of the AI applications that have been transformed by this breakthrough.
Thus, "artificial intelligence" (AI) is the term used to describe the simulation of human intelligence
processes by machinea and software. Theses systems are designed to carry out tasks that, if carried out
by humans, would require the use of intelligence, such as learning, decision-making, pattern recognition
and problem solving; these tasks include managing massive amounts of statistical data, detecting trends
and making recommendations based on them, or even carrying them out. In other words, AI today is not
about creating new knowledge but rather about gathering and analyzing data to maximize its utility for
making decisions.
Some may argue that artificial intelligence, or AI, can be beneficial in that it can instantaneously produce
a perfectly written piece, but the consequences are exceedingly high. Education has reached some
serious issues because of AI that have impacted how students are learning. Some negative impacts of AI
on today’s education are the lack of human interaction and dependence on AI.
One major consequence of newly created artificial intelligence on education is the lack of human
interaction. Even though AI can give students personalized educational services, it cannot replace
human teachers who provide face-to-face interactions. Teachers can humanly interact, discuss, and
provide feedback unlike AI could ever. They are crucial in students’ development not only in their
academic careers but also as they develop social skills, as advocated by Teachers of Tomorrow. Teachers
provide a sense of physical interaction that artificial intelligence could never replace. As seen through
the global pandemic, human interaction is necessary for an individual’s overall well-being. AI could
potentially result in decreased human interaction and end up leading to detrimental educational
experiences.
ChatGPT, for example, does not understand what it is writing/producing; it is simply making predictions
about what words would be used based upon its internal dataset of existing real-world content
(Weinstein, interviewed in Rogan Citation2023).
Hallucinations are instances where the Gen-AI produces content that is not based on the input it was
given, manifesting in the output of highly creative, but also unrealistic or even nonsensical content (Dziri
et al. Citation2022). These hallucinations can be difficult to detect, a major problem if the user
mistakenly believes that Gen-AI is ‘producing’ information instead of simply generating statistically
probable text (Ji et al. Citation2022). This is one of the key problems with AI text generators that
students who want to use Gen-AI to cheat need to be aware of: oftentimes, the AI just makes up ideas
that do not exist, yet such material usually seems plausible (Reid, interviewed in Intercom Citation2022).
It is also imperative for students to be aware of the capabilities of AI in image, video, and audio
manipulation. Recent advancements have significantly improved the quality and realism of AI-generated
photos, videos, and voice cloning (Göring et al. Citation2023).
