Physics Lab Work

The document outlines an experiment to measure the moment of force using a meter ruler balanced on a knife edge. It details the procedure for accurately taking measurements with slotted masses, recording data, and plotting a graph of mass versus distance. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of precautions to ensure accurate results.

Title: Moment of force

Objectives: - to taking data accurately

- To plotting graph
- To highlighting important pre caution

Materials required: -

- Slotted masses
- Ruler
- Two loops of string
- Prism ( knife edge )
- Retort stand

Procedure:

1. Place the meter rule on the knife edge with its scale facing up ward
2. Adjust the position of the knife edge until the meter ruler balances horizontally
3. Record the point of balance G.
4. Use one of the loops of string to attach the 20g mass hanger securely at G. (do not change the
position of the hanger through the experiment)
5. Attach the mass X securely at a distance AP=2cm on the meter ruler (the position of X should be
kept constant throughout the experiment)
6. Add a 20g slotted mass to the hanger & record the total mass of the hanger & record the total
mass of the hanger & the added mass as m=40g
7. Repeat the experiment for four other total mass m=60g, 80g, 100g, & 120g , in case read &
record ‘ d ‘ and evaluate d-1
8. Read & record the distance GQ=d

10. Determine the slope S, of the graph and the intercepted ‘C ‘on the vertical axis.
 Slope: S=
 Intercept: C=
11. If in this experiment m = 70g use the graph, determine the balance length’s ‘
12. Calculate the ‘Z ‘using equation:

Z = 100 + S
