Which IPS system has not been

it is the 7.7L 600hp D8-IPS800, as
this will give the best power-to-

suitable for this boat. The first
boat built is fitted with IPS, and so
far there appears to be no Verado-

Cantieri Magazzù claim a 50-knot

released yet for the M-16. They

SAXDOR
340 GTWA
Bridging the gap between the 320
and 400, this new 34-footer is
seriously feature-rich.

S
axdor’s latest builds
on the success of the
320 range. Based on a
near-identical deep-
vee hull with a transom deadrise
of 21 degrees, the 340 GTWA
will doubtless drive in the same
responsive manner as the 320 GTC
that we tested this summer. It
comes with three engine options
ranging from twin 200hp V6
Mercury outboards to twin 300hp
V8 Mercury Verado outboards, with
the V8 Verado package having the
option of Mercury’s joystick system.
The 42-knot 320 GTC with twin
225hp Mercury V6s is, by most
people’s standards, a quick boat
that is capable of some tight turns
while providing perfectly balanced
steering. Twin 300hp V8s, I was told
at the time, are a popular choice
for the 320, having the ability to
push the boat to 50 knots, so I
don’t doubt that the 340 will be
just as quick. The vacuum-infused
twin-step hull of the 320/340 range
proved efficient, with twin 225hp
V6s on the 320, so I would expect
good efficiency from twin 300hp
V8s at like-for-like cruising speeds
with the 340 GTWA.
The helm design is very good: the
ergonomics are spot on, the wheel
is adjustable, the throttles come
perfectly to hand and visibility all
round is excellent. In standard form,
the helmsman and navigator have
two reversible bucket seats – as
fitted to the 320 GTC.

OVERVIEW SAXDOR 340 GTWA

However, there is the optional

luxury of a big bench helm seat.
Whatever the set-up, the driving
position, seated or standing, works
well – you are sufficiently elevated
for that perfect bow view. The dash
is fitted with twin Simrad MFDs
in glass bridge style, which really
sets off the dash aesthetics, while
giving you all the information you
need at a glance. The boat has the
option of Zipwake auto trim tabs
and Mercury’s Active Trim system
– the latter being blissfully easy to
use when you want to switch from
auto to manual, and vice versa. Like
the joystick option, a combination
of Zipwake and Active Trim takes
the headache out of being the
perfect helmsman, and Active Trim
certainly helps in getting the best
out of a 34ft sports boat.
The 340 GTWA is Saxdor’s first
wheelhouse walk-around model
and is distinguished by its folding
2.7m bulwarks, a distinctive feature
for a boat of this size that is
becoming increasingly popular.
With the 340, the folding bulwarks
sit further forward than with the

dining space for five. One major

optional extra that will likely get a
tick in the box is the aft cabin. Sitting
under the sunbed, it is accessed
through a folding section of the
wheelhouse bench seat, or simply
by lifting the sunbed up on its rams.
It has windows on three sides, so
it has plenty of natural light and is
easily big enough for two adults.
Alternatively, if you still want the
storage space of the aft cabin but
need no berths, this can be specified
as a water toy locker with top-entry
access and no windows. Instead, you
can simply have an open cockpit. In
the port-quarter coaming, a strut-
assisted hatch opens to reveal a
sink and a griddle – a great location
enabling cockpit cooking overlooking
the water. On the opposite side, an
identical hatch opens to reveal a long
lined locker for fender/warp storage.
Below deck, the 340 GTWA includes
a generous forward double cabin
with ample natural light from the
overhead glass sections. The double
bed is more than enough for a
couple, and a locker sits forward of
the heads. The heads itself is fitted
with a sink, a toilet and a vanity unit.
A full-on shower is not an option
given the lack of height, but there is
the choice of a deck shower. What
makes this compartment all the
more usable is the fold-out door,
which transforms from a right-angle
enclosure to folding flat. The concept
works well, as sometimes you will
not need to shut the heads door
when using it, meaning it is open
plan to the cabin and comfier to use.
The 340 GTWA is an example of
design overload, and it is all the
better for it. Saxdor have considered
what most people now want and
expect in a 34ft sports cruiser/
adventure craft and have managed
to put this on an extras list without
creating too much compromise. No
34ft boat can have everything, hence
there is no full-on galley taking up
valuable wheelhouse space when a
fridge/griddle/sink will realistically
serve most weekend/day boating
needs. Like any Scandinavian boat,
it will drive well, eating up sea miles
at a healthy pace. Although the 340
GTWA won’t be available in the UK for
a little while, Ideal Boat do currently
offer the rest of Saxdor’s full range of
sports craft.

The accommodation on the

they realise that many skippers do

do with some lateral security when

Wheel and throttle ergonomics
work well, and the two big Simrad

to function correctly, and as the
RPM was increased, suddenly one
engine cut right back, accompanied
by thick black smoke belching
from the exhaust. We crept back
to port leaving a trail of black soot
behind us, and once safely moored
we promptly removed the suspect
new turbo. However, on inspection,
the only thing we noticed was a
small amount of play in the turbo
vane, which the suppliers assured
us was normal. They also said that
new turbos never fail, so we looked
elsewhere for the problem.

THEY ALSO SAID THAT

NEW TURBOS NEVER
FAIL, SO WE LOOKED
ELSEWHERE FOR THE
PROBLEM.

Having checked the entire engine

for another possible explanation
for the sudden drop in power and
the black smoke, we did notice that
one of the supercharger pulleys
was hard to turn and we felt the
problem may lie here, so a new
pulley was fitted, the turbo refitted
and another sea trial carried out.
The same motor was still down
on power and black smoke again
started to come from the exhaust
as we opened the throttles – and
this time we lost first one, then the
second tachometer, and eventually
all the other instruments. We
limped back to the pontoon again
and discovered that we couldn’t
restart the motors once stopped.
Obviously something fundamental
was wrong that was causing both
the lack of power and the electrical
problems.
The same turbo was removed
again (not a five-minute job) and
this time the vane was totally
seized, so the turbo was returned
to the suppliers for evaluation.
The electrical issues were more of
a conundrum, and having spoken
to many Volvo experts, it was
recommended that we replace
two small electric reset units that

But the most common way to dislodge an anchor caught
under a rock is to relax the rope and try pulling in different
directions. Pulling directly upwards can be most effective.
If, on the other hand, you’re firmly hooked underneath
an old mooring chain, this will take some persistent
effort! Employing a ‘trip’ line can be an excellent means
of freeing an anchor in most scenarios. You don’t need
anything special for this, particularly when operating in
shallow water. In fact, I use one of my spring lines and a
small marker buoy, though a fender will work fine. When
inspecting the ‘hook end’ of the anchor, you’ll see another
eye – the tripping eye onto which you tie the rope with the
buoy/fender at its bitter end. When set, the tripping line
and marker will float directly above the laid anchor and
give you the means to lift the anchor by its head, thereby

‘Culture is so strong in orca

that they become reproductively

SPECIES
There are over 90 species
of cetaceans - whales,
dolphins and porpoises -
and all are predators. To
survive, they must kill
and eat other animals,
from krill to giant squid to
elephant seals. Orcas (also
known by their common
name of ‘killer whales’)
are a large kind of dolphin,
but similar in weight to an
elephant.
