TED Talk – The Urger of Intersectionality
- A “frame”
- “trickle down approach to social justice”
- Intersectionality
History & Origins of the Term: Intersectionality
- Must remember why and how this term came to be
- Must be a practice, not just a concept
- Origins: law rejects claims to see gender and race as connected, discrimination only
recognized according to a system of sameness based on white women and Black men
- Began with Black women
- Gives language and voice to advocacy and activism for all those who face vulnerabilities
*relationship to power
- Intersectionality has given many activists and individuals a FRAME for their
discrimination
- Discrimination may not just be gender-based, or just be race-based, instead about the
intersection of the two
Criticisms
- Intersectionality dismissed as “identity politics”
- Considered too academic – a concept rather than a practice
- Criticized for bullying and “privilege checking” – acknowledging privilege is hard,
especially when facing oppression in some ways and being privileged in others
