The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 81: Seeking Confirmation
After leaving Earl Dong-Ping’s mansion, instead of
heading directly to Quezi Hutong, the mistress and servant
walked in the opposite direction.

Not far from Yuqian Hutong was an area of civilian

residences. Among them was an unremarkable vacant
house for rent, which Jiang-Si had recently leased through
a property agent.

In the capital where land was worth its weight in gold,

purchasing a residence in this wealthy area would be
nearly impossible, but renting was still manageable.

When Jiang-Si received more than two thousand taels of

silver from her business dealings, she had made these
arrangements, knowing that meeting A-Fei at the
teahouse repeatedly would become inconvenient over
time.
The pair entered briefly and emerged transformed – the
mistress now appeared as a handsome youth
accompanied by a delicate servant.

A-Man looked at Jiang-Si in her male attire and giggled:

“Young Miss, you should darken your face a bit.”

“Next time. We’ll need to prepare more things here in the

future.” Jiang-Si walked while wondering when A-Fei
would return.

There was much to do today: first, inquire with Seventh

Prince Yu about any evidence against the Heir of Marquis
Chang-Xing, then not neglect matters with Miss Xiu the
tofu seller, and if her father had news about Lingwu
Temple, that would need investigation too. There was
simply too much to handle.

Quezi Hutong wasn’t far from Yuqian Hutong where Earl

Dong-Ping’s mansion was located. Following Jiang-Zhan’s
information, they soon found the civilian residence with a
crooked jujube tree at its entrance.

“Young Miss, is this the place?”

“It should be. Go knock and say Second Young Master
Jiang is visiting.”

“Who exactly are we visiting?” A-Man hesitated.

With her mistress dressed this way and claiming to be the

Second Young Master, could they be meeting a man?

A-Man approached the door and knocked uncertainly.

“Who is it?” came a voice from inside, and then the door
opened halfway, revealing a weathered face.

The doorkeeper appeared to be in his forties, with one

blind eye. His remaining eye looked somewhat fierce.

A-Man tensed: “Second Young Master Jiang has come to

visit your master.”

The doorkeeper glanced behind him, his single eye

suddenly gleaming.

“What’s the matter?” A-Man’s scalp tingled, and she

instinctively stepped back.

“Where is Second Young Master Jiang?”

A-Man stepped aside, revealing Jiang-Si: “This is our
Young Master.”

The doorkeeper gave Jiang-Si a cursory look and said

with an insincere smile: “Please wait.” Then the door
slammed shut.

A-Man rubbed her nose and complained: “This house’s

doorkeeper has quite an attitude.”

Inside, the doorkeeper rushed to report: “Master,

someone’s pretending to be Second Young Master Jiang
to swindle us!”

Before Yu-Jin could react, Long-Dan sneered: “Someone

dares to fool Master? Open the door and release Er-Niu!”

Er-Niu gave Long-Dan a sidelong glance, remaining firmly

seated.

The meaning was clear: Why should I go if you don’t?

To the surprise of both man and dog, their master

suddenly strode toward the entrance.

What was happening?

The pair exchanged confused glances and hurried after
him.

Yu-Jin eagerly walked to the entrance, paused before the

green-lacquered wooden door to compose himself, and
then suddenly pulled it open.

Er-Niu darted past Yu-Jin.

“Heavens!” A-Man cried out in shock.

The large dog approached Jiang-Si, grabbed her hem with

its mouth, and tugged her inside, its fluffy tail wagging
happily.

Jiang-Si sighed internally.

Dogs were far more straightforward than humans – no

matter how much a person changed, as long as their
unique scent remained the same, a dog would recognize
them immediately.

“Let go quickly, or you’ll tear the clothes.”

As soon as she spoke, unlike A-Man’s naturally clear

voice, her delicate feminine tones gave her away.
Er-Niu, still holding the hem, turned to look at Yu-Jin
questioningly.

“Young… Master Jiang, please come in.”

Not wanting to linger at the entrance, Jiang-Si nodded

slightly to Yu-Jin and walked inside.

The doorkeeper quietly pulled at Long-Dan’s sleeve: “But

that’s not Second Young Master Jiang…”

Long-Dan excitedly slapped away the doorkeeper’s hand:

“Don’t interfere!”

Heavens, a young lady had come to visit Master – he

needed to find a stool to watch this unfold!

Jiang-Si followed Yu-Jin inside, stopping in the courtyard.

“I’ve come today to ask Young Master Yu something.”

“What might Miss Jiang wish to ask?”

Long-Dan’s eyes suddenly widened.

So Master had known all along this was Miss Jiang!

Wait, what was the relationship between Miss Jiang and
Second Young Master Jiang?

Jiang-Si, familiar with Long-Dan and Cold-Shadow’s

loyalty to Yu-Jin from her previous life, didn’t mind Long-
Dan’s presence. She produced a silk pouch: “Why did
Young Master Yu give this to me?”

Long-Dan’s jaw nearly dropped.

Master had even given her a token of affection?

A-Man was equally shocked, glaring at Yu-Jin.

When had this scoundrel managed to slip past her to give

her mistress such improper gifts?!

“I was very surprised to receive this, so I couldn’t help but

come ask Young Master Yu directly. I hope you won’t find
me presumptuous.”

“Not at all—” Yu-Jin suddenly caught himself, cleared his

throat, and asked seriously, “What would Miss Jiang like to
know?”

“I want to know why Young Master Yu wrote that note.”

“I was concerned you might be taken advantage of and
couldn’t help but warn you.”

Long-Dan bit his hand hard.

This must be a dream!

Er-Niu, however, lay contentedly between Yu-Jin and

Jiang-Si, tail wagging lazily.

Master on one side, Mistress on the other – for a dog with

such emotional depth, life couldn’t be more perfect.

Jiang-Si’s cheeks flushed as she bit her lip: “I mean, why

did you say such things about the Heir of Marquis Chang-
Xing? Do you find something improper about him?”

Who had asked what he thought? Yet he just stated it so

matter-of-factly – truly someone used to sweet-talking
others.

“The Heir’s eyes are lifeless, his lips pale, his steps weak
and unsteady…”

As Yu-Jin described this, Long-Dan’s shock could no

longer be described as mere surprise.
Master’s description painted the Heir as someone
overindulgent in carnal pleasures – why would Master tell
a young lady such things?

“Therefore, I concluded the Heir is a lustful man. A

gentleman shouldn’t stand beneath a dangerous wall –
Miss Jiang should stay away from such a person.”

Jiang-Si’s mouth twitched slightly: “Young Master Yu just

judged by his appearance?”

Yu-Jin nodded solemnly: “One’s appearance reflects one’s

heart!”

Five years ago, when he was about to leave for the distant
south, he had secretly attended Earl Dong-Ping’s
daughter’s wedding just to see her once.

Though he hadn’t fully understood then, he had deeply

resented the way the Heir looked at her – resented it
enough to want to gouge out those eyes.

But he couldn’t tell her these things.

He could hardly say he’d been angry about the way the
Heir looked at her five years ago and was still angry now,
could he?
Was he such a jealous person?

“I thought there might be something truly wrong with the

Heir and was planning to warn my Second Sister. Since
it’s just about his appearance, there’s nothing more to
discuss. I’ve troubled you enough today – farewell.” Jiang-
Si curtsied gracefully.

Just then, the doorkeeper rushed in to report: “Second

Young Master Jiang has arrived!”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 82: A Sweetheart
Second Brother is here?

Jiang Si was stunned and couldn’t help but look at Yu Jin.

Yu Jin hadn’t anticipated this unexpected situation either.

After a brief moment of surprise, he immediately pointed to
the woodshed: “Quick, hide in there!”

Before Jiang Si could process what was happening, A-

Man pulled her into the woodshed like a gust of wind.

“Finally, we’re safe,” A-Man said, patting her rapidly

beating heart.
Jiang Si finally came to her senses and looked around the
low, dim woodshed, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
“What are we doing here?”

However, it was no longer convenient to go out now, as

Jiang Zhan had already entered carrying the cooked beef.
If they had remained openly in the courtyard, they could
have explained themselves, but if they had gone out now,
it would have been impossible to clear up the
misunderstanding.

“Brother Yu Qi, I came especially today to reward Erniu!”

Jiang Zhan waved the cooked beef in his hand, his smile
radiant.

“Reward Erniu?”

Jiang Zhan tossed the cooked beef over. Erniu jumped up

and caught the oiled paper package containing the beef in
one bite, then went to lie down by the tree roots to eat.

The aroma of beef immediately wafted out.

Long Dan couldn’t help but lick his lips.

Goodness, this was braised beef from the Zuixiao Tower,
extremely expensive but delicious. Even he couldn’t afford
to eat it often!

In the Great Zhou Dynasty, it was forbidden to slaughter

draft oxen. Apart from those who died of old age, disease,
or accidents, killing a healthy draft ox was punishable by
caning.

With the meat source being scarce, the price of beef in

restaurants was not something ordinary people could
afford.

Long Dan stared intently at Erniu enjoying his feast, with

only one thought in his mind: A dog’s life is better than a
human’s!

Jiang Zhan sat down with a commanding presence:

“Today, Erniu did a great deed, of course, he should be
rewarded!”

Long Dan blinked.

Wait, could the good deed Second Young Master Jiang

was referring to be Erniu causing trouble at someone’s
wedding procession?
“Oh, Brother Yu Qi, you didn’t order Erniu to do that today,
did you?”

Yu Jin glanced at the slightly ajar door of the woodshed

from the corner of his eye and said seriously, “How could
that be? Third Young Master Ji is my cousin.”

“Oh, that guy is your cousin—” Jiang Zhan suddenly

widened his eyes, “Wait, Brother Yu Qi, you’re related to
Duke An’s family?”

Yu Jin’s expression froze.

Damn, he had let it slip in a moment of distraction in front

of her.

Inside the woodshed, Jiang Si felt quite amused hearing

this.

This man loved to fool people. In her previous life, he had

tricked her as Yu Qi, the son of a merchant. Now he was
confusing Second Brother. Let’s see how he explains this.

Unexpectedly, the man quickly regained his composure

and sighed, “Well, which noble family doesn’t have a few
poor relatives?”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Zhan immediately showed a
sympathetic expression: “Brother Yu Qi, you’ve had it
tough. In the future, stay away from those snobbish
families. If you need anything, just ask me, Jiang Zhan.”

Erniu, who was eating beef, barked twice at Jiang Zhan in

displeasure.

He hated such dog-discriminating fools the most!

Yu Jin seemed quite moved, but his smile held a deeper

meaning: “There will surely be times when I’ll need
Second Brother Jiang’s help in the future. I thank you in
advance.”

“No need for thanks, we’re brothers, aren’t we?” Jiang

Zhan waved his hand generously, quite nonchalantly.

Brother Yu Qi was his lifesaver. If he were a woman,

according to the rules in novels, he should offer himself in
marriage. Now, just helping out when needed was nothing.

As Jiang Zhan was lamenting that his gratitude wasn’t

enough, a woman’s scream suddenly came from the
woodshed. The wooden door burst open, and A-Man
rushed out with her hands over her head: “There’s a rat!”
Jiang Si, left in the woodshed, was dumbfounded.

She never imagined that A-Man, who could fight several

strong men, would be afraid of rats!

In that instant, even the “habitual liar” Yu Jin forgot to

react, with only one thought in his mind: Jiang Zhan will
surely turn from gratitude to resentment now, right?

At this critical moment, the large dog eating beef by the

tree roots took two steps back for a running start, then
suddenly leaped into the air.

Just as Jiang Zhan was about to see what was happening,

his vision went dark as he was knocked to the ground by
the large dog.

The dog’s front paws were on Jiang Zhan’s body, its

tongue hanging just above his face. Jiang Zhan was so
scared he didn’t dare move, inwardly cursing: The smell of
beef on its breath was suffocating!

A-Man stood frozen in the courtyard, and after calming

down, she couldn’t help but cover her mouth.

Oh no, she had caused trouble.

Yu Jin coughed lightly and pointed towards the main gate.

A-Man was quick-witted enough to understand Yu Jin’s

meaning instantly and ran off.

Jiang Si, still in the woodshed: “…”

Seeing that A-Man had disappeared, Erniu finally showed

mercy and released his paws, leisurely walking back to the
tree roots to continue eating beef.

Jiang Zhan sprang up like a carp, rushing towards the tree

roots with murderous intent: “Erniu, I’m going to slaughter
you for dog meat!”

Yu Jin hurriedly held Jiang Zhan back, his face sincere:

“Second Brother Jiang, you’ve misunderstood.”

“Misunderstood what?”

“Erniu was happy eating and was just showing his

gratitude to you.”

“What? That’s how he shows gratitude?”

Yu Jin smiled bitterly: “How can dogs and humans think
the same way? I raised Erniu, I know him. When he’s
excited, he likes to get close to people like that.”

Jiang Zhan glared at Erniu suspiciously, finally muttering,

“If I raised a dog like that, I’d have killed it long ago.”

“Woof!”

Yu Jin gave Erniu a calming look, and only then did Erniu
quiet down.

“By the way, Brother Yu Qi, who was that woman who ran
out of the woodshed just now?”

Jiang Zhan hadn’t seen clearly before being knocked

down by Erniu, but because of that, even though A-Man
was dressed as a man, her scream confirmed she was a
woman.

He had been to Brother Yu Qi’s place many times but had

never seen any maids or servants. Could that woman be
Brother Yu Qi’s sweetheart?

Yu Jin was stunned for a moment, then quickly put on a

stern face and rebuked Long Dan, who was watching the
commotion: “Don’t bring women back here to fool around
in the future!”

Long Dan: “…” He felt the urge to rebel against his

superior, what should he do?

Jiang Zhan gave Long Dan a contemptuous look.

Long Dan: “…” He wanted to rebel now!

After finally sending Jiang Zhan away, Yu Jin raised his

hand to gently massage his temples, letting out a slight
sigh of relief.

Jiang Si walked out of the woodshed.

“Let me escort you back,” Yu Jin offered.

“No need to trouble Young Master Yu,” Jiang Si firmly

refused. Seeing Yu Jin’s hurt expression, she wasn’t
fooled by his handsome face at all and said coolly, “It
wouldn’t be good if someone saw us.”

Yu Jin looked at the girl who was keeping him at arm’s

length and suddenly smiled slightly: “People often see me
drinking with Second Young Master Jiang, it’s no
problem.”
Jiang Si was tall, and both siblings resembled their late
mother. People who weren’t familiar with them might have
difficulty distinguishing them from afar.

“What if we run into my Second Brother?” Jiang Si

countered.

Yu Jin rubbed his nose and softened his tone: “Then let
Erniu escort you. You came to find me, and if something
happens to you on your way back alone, I won’t be able to
explain it to Second Brother Jiang.”

Jiang Si didn’t want to argue further and nodded in

agreement.

Yu Jin stood at the doorway, no longer able to see the

silhouettes of the young lady and the large dog, yet he
remained motionless for a long time.

Long Dan approached, his face full of curiosity, and asked,

“Master, was that young lady who came earlier your
sweetheart?”

Yu Jin raised his hand and hit Long Dan on the head,
frowning as he said, “Don’t talk nonsense!”
She will be my sweetheart in the future, he thought to
himself.

Mistake
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 83: A Mistake
Having gained no useful information from Yu-Jin, finding
Lingwu Temple and Miss Xiu the tofu beauty became
urgent priorities.

For Lingwu Temple, they would have to wait for news from
Jiang An-Cheng. As for the tofu beauty, many people had
recognized her during that chance encounter at Willow
Embankment, so making inquiries should be easier.

With A-Fei not yet returned, Jiang-Si assigned this task to

A-Man.

A-Man had good martial skills and looked nearly flawless

in male attire, making her the most suitable choice.

Jiang-Si had considered asking Jiang-Zhan for help but

dismissed the thought.

Though she was reluctant to admit it, her Second Brother

was more likely to cause trouble than help.

Before dinnertime, A-Man returned with news about Miss

Xiu the tofu beauty.
“It was easy to find out! I just asked a child, and they told
me everything. The tofu beauty lives in Wang Family
Village, not far from Willow Embankment, in the last house
by the river…” A-Man chattered on, clearly trying to make
up for her earlier mistake.

She still felt embarrassed about nearly getting her

mistress caught by the Second Young Master.

“But the child told me the tofu beauty has become a

madwoman. She doesn’t sell tofu anymore, just stays
home crying and wailing all day.” A-Man sighed
sympathetically at the end.

“Get ready. We’re going to Wang Family Village tonight.”

“Young Miss?” A-Man was slightly surprised but, meeting

Jiang-Si’s calm gaze, nodded without further questions.
She felt a small thrill of excitement.

First, her mistress had taken her on a night expedition to

Lake Mo-You, and now to Wang Family Village – life as a
senior maid was truly exciting!

At dinner time, Jiang An-Cheng also brought good news:

“What a coincidence – your Third Uncle has indeed heard
of Lingwu Temple.”
While Jiang-Si had expected to find information about
Miss Xiu the tofu beauty, news about Lingwu Temple was
an unexpected pleasure.

“Where is Lingwu Temple?”

“It’s in Qingniu Town in the suburbs. Though not as

famous as the temples in the capital, it has quite a
following locally.” At this point, Jiang An-Cheng chuckled,
“It’s especially renowned for granting prayers about
marriage and children.”

“I see.” Jiang-Si pondered briefly, then took the

opportunity to ask Jiang An-Cheng, “Daughter would like
to go pray at Lingwu Temple and stay for a few days.”

The suburbs were different from the city – between travel

time and investigation, even three days would be
considered quick. Without her elder’s support, she
certainly couldn’t make the trip.

Jiang An-Cheng agreed to his daughter’s small request

without hesitation: “Go ahead. It’s not too hot yet, and the
suburbs are more open than the capital, so it will be more
comfortable. I’ll tell your Second Brother to accompany
you.”
Recreation was fine, but safety couldn’t be ignored. If he
wasn’t worried about his daughter finding him bothersome,
he would have offered to accompany her himself.

Well, young people going out to have fun would find it

annoying to have an old man like him tagging along.

The handsome middle-aged Master Jiang thought silently.

“When do you plan to go, Si-er?”

“In the next few days, after I prepare what to bring.” Jiang-
Si didn’t give a specific time.

If things went smoothly with the tofu beauty, they could

investigate Lingwu Temple by the day after tomorrow at
the latest. If not, they would have to find another time.

Night fell quickly.

On this midsummer night, under a bright moon and

scattered stars, with flowers swaying in shadow, A-Qiao
saw Jiang-Si and A-Man at the door, whispering, “Be
careful, Young Miss.”
“Don’t worry, I’m here!” A-Man patted her chest
confidently.

On their second night expedition, the mistress and maid

skillfully left Earl Dong-Ping’s mansion and headed toward
the Jinshui River.

At this hour, the Jinshui River was at its liveliest.

The broad river was filled with boats.

There were three-story pleasure boats decorated with

lanterns and gleaming with gold, and smaller boats with
red lanterns nimbly weaving between them.

These boats housed the capital’s courtesans of varying

ranks and now was the time they received their honored
guests.

This was the “never-sleeping sky” of the Jinshui River

banks that people spoke of.

A-Man gazed into the distance, seeing willow trees

swaying on both banks, layers of boat shadows on the
river, and brilliant lights scattered on the water like
countless bits of gold. Faint music drifted on the wind,
making it seem like a celestial realm.
“I never imagined the Jinshui River, so calm during the
day, could be so lively at night.” A-Man sighed, then
noticed Jiang-Si had stopped. “Young Miss, why have we
stopped?”

Though Wang Family Village wasn’t far from Willow

Embankment, they didn’t need to approach the Jinshui
River.

Jiang-Si gazed at Willow Embankment and the golden

river, her heart aching quietly.

Her Second Brother had drowned in the Jinshui River.

Taking a deep breath, Jiang-Si smiled at A-Man: “Let’s

go.”

Under A-Man’s guidance, they reached Wang Family

Village.

“Young Miss, the tofu beauty’s house is just ahead.

Should we go through the village or circle?”

Looking at the pitch-black village without a single light,

Jiang-Si made her decision: “Let’s circle.”
Common folk, being careful with oil costs, would
extinguish their lights and sleep early, but passing through
the village would still add many unknown risks.

The night breeze whispered, accompanied by constant

frog croaks and insect sounds. Without lanterns, the
mistress and maid could only walk the unfamiliar village
path by moonlight and starlight.

“Young Miss, that house on the hillside is the tofu

beauty’s.”

Unlike most clustered homes, the tofu beauty’s house was

built against a hill, with no neighbors nearby.

Jiang-Si paused at the dilapidated courtyard gate.

She couldn’t smell the unique sour scent that typically

pervaded the yards of longtime tofu makers.

Hidden in the thick darkness, Jiang-Si’s expression

changed slightly.

If she wasn’t mistaken, this couldn’t be the tofu beauty’s

house!
“Young Miss, shall we go in?” A-Man, not understanding
Jiang-Si’s hesitation, asked in a low voice.

Jiang-Si shook her head, sighing softly: “A-Man, that child

fooled you. This isn’t the tofu beauty’s house.”

“What? Why does Young Miss say that?”

Jiang-Si remained silent, considering whether to search

for the tofu beauty’s house in the unfamiliar village in
darkness or return tomorrow to make further inquiries.

Rationally, returning now was a wise choice, but

emotionally, having come all this way, it felt too frustrating
to leave empty-handed.

Moreover, each day delayed here meant a delay at

Lingwu Temple. And each day’s delay could mean another
girl falling victim.

Jiang-Si had an unsettling suspicion about the Heir of

Marquis Chang-Xing.

From the conversation between those two servants, she

knew that in the past two years, seven or eight girls had
been victimized by the Heir, but the disappearance of the
tofu beauty’s daughter had happened very close to the
most recent victim.

This suggested the Heir was becoming more depraved,

and the intervals between victims might become
increasingly shorter.

Of course, her appearance at the Marquis’s mansion

might have been a factor in provoking the Heir.

This was precisely why Jiang-Si felt such urgency.

As Jiang-Si wrestled with these thoughts, the decrepit

courtyard gate suddenly opened.

A-Man startled, quickly pulling Jiang-Si to hide.

Someone walked out of the courtyard, pausing at the gate.

Jiang-Si’s eyes suddenly narrowed.

The person was holding a cleaver!

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 84: The Assailant
In the bright moonlight, one could see that the man was
about forty years old, short but sturdy.
The man lingered at the doorway for a moment, then
tucked the cleaver into his chest and strode into the night.

“Young… Young Miss, is that man going to kill someone?”

A-Man whispered, barely concealing her nervousness.
“Or… did he just kill the people in this house?”

“There’s no smell of blood,” Jiang Si said softly, watching

the man who was about to disappear completely into the
darkness.

A-Man bit her lip hard. “Then that means… this man is
indeed going to kill someone!”

Saying this, A-Man became a bit flustered, unconsciously

clutching Jiang Si’s sleeve tightly. “Young Miss, what
should we do?”

This sudden situation was something even Jiang Si hadn’t

anticipated.

She had considered many scenarios for her night

investigation of Wang Family Village, but she never
imagined stumbling upon an ongoing murder case.

“A-Man, can you handle that man?”

“This servant can handle him. Although he looks sturdy, I
can tell from his gait that he hasn’t practiced martial arts. I
can easily deal with two or three men like him.”

Jiang Si pondered for a moment. Seeing that the man’s

shadow had disappeared, she finally made up her mind:
“Let’s follow him and see.”

Encountering such a situation, and ignoring it would weigh

on her conscience, but all of this had to be premised on
being able to protect themselves.

Jiang Si was very clear on one point: kindness beyond

one’s abilities isn’t kindness, but foolishness, especially if
it endangers those around you. That would be even more
foolish.

“Alright!” Hearing Jiang Si say this, A-Man’s eyes flashed

with excitement.

A-Man was, after all, a young girl who hadn’t experienced

much of life. Even with her martial arts skills, she would
still be nervous in such a situation, but this nervousness
didn’t mean fear.
For the skilled and daring little maid, following a potential
murderer was far more thrilling than searching for some
tofu beauty in the dark.

“Young Miss, I don’t know where that man went,” A-Man

said with a troubled expression after walking a few steps.

“That way,” Jiang Si walked in a certain direction.

A-Man looked around and asked quietly, “How does

Young Miss know?”

Jiang Si replied softly, “That man has been drinking.”

The strong smell of cheap white liquor, even at a distance

and through the thick night air, wouldn’t let her lose
direction.

Jiang Si’s answer confused the little maid even more.

How did Young Miss know the man had been drinking?

Never mind, following Young Miss was surely the right

choice.

The mistress and maid walked arm in arm for a short while
before Jiang Si stopped first.
A-Man stopped right after, pointing ahead, “Young Miss,
look, that man is over there!”

The man was about ten zhang away from them, now
pacing outside the courtyard wall of a house.

A-Man pulled Jiang Si to hide behind a large tree in front

of a house, observing the man’s movements.

The man finally made his move, stacking some mud bricks
to climb over a part of the wall that had a gap.

The mistress and maid exchanged a glance and followed

quietly.

“Young Miss, this house looks even more run-down than

that man’s,” A-Man muttered, standing at the base of the
wall with the gap.

Jiang Si, however, showed a complex expression.

Through the wall, she could already smell the astringent

scent of beans. This smell seemed to have permeated
every brick and tile of this household, something that
couldn’t have formed in a short time.
If there wasn’t a second family selling tofu in Wang Family
Village, then this house was very likely to be the home of
the tofu beauty, Miss Xiu.

At this moment, Jiang Si suddenly felt somewhat

emotional.

Perhaps good deeds do bring good rewards.

If she had chosen not to get involved earlier, by the time

they found this place, the tofu beauty might have already
met with misfortune, which would have greatly increased
the difficulty of what she wanted to accomplish.

“A-Man, you go in first, then open the door for me from the
inside. Hurry!” Jiang Si urged.

A-Man nodded, stepped on the mud bricks the man had

placed at the base of the wall, grabbed the top of the wall
with both hands and with a strong push, her entire body
rose into the air, landing silently on the other side of the
wall.

Soon, the courtyard door was gently opened, and Jiang Si,
who had been waiting there, slipped in nimbly.
“Young Miss, that man has gone into the house!” A-Man
said in a low voice.

Jiang Si quickly moved inward, with A-Man hurriedly

following in front.

There was no light in the house, and even the moon in the
sky was hidden behind clouds. The stars had dimmed,
and the inky darkness of the world seemed to have
suddenly intensified, much like the mood of the mistress
and maid at that moment.

Suddenly, there was a sound, and the two involuntarily

stopped, looking at each other in bewilderment.

“Damn it, can’t see a thing in this darkness!” The

grumbling voice, though not loud, clearly reached their
ears.

It turned out that the sound was from the man accidentally
bumping into something.

The door to the main hall was wide open, with only half a
curtain hanging between the main hall and the inner room.
The man had already gone inside, and it was temporarily
quiet.
At this point, A-Man didn’t dare to speak anymore and
inquired with her eyes to Jiang Si.

Jiang Si, on the contrary, showed no nervousness and

calmly lifted the curtain to look inside.

In the low, dim room, the man stood by the kang bed,
staring motionlessly at the person on it.

The person on the kang suddenly turned over, and a voice

filled with tears mumbled, “Niu Niu—”

A-Man’s eyes widened instantly, her eyes shining like

stars in the darkness.

This was the tofu beauty’s home!

She couldn’t help but tug at Jiang Si’s sleeve, quite

excited by this unexpected discovery.

Jiang Si shook her head slightly, signaling her not to make

a sound.

A-Man quickly nodded.

At this moment, if anyone were to see this scene, they

would surely find it spine-chilling.
On the kang lay a woman mumbling in her dreams, by the
kang stood a man with a cleaver in his chest, and just half
a zhang away behind the door curtain, two young women
stood silently.

Such an absurd and bizarre situation would be enough to

make anyone’s heart grow cold upon seeing it.

The man, as if his nerves were numbed by alcohol, hadn’t

noticed the presence of Jiang Si and her maid at all.

In the light filtering through the window, he stared at the

person on the kang with an infatuated, almost greedy look.

After a while, the man took out the cleaver from his chest
and placed it by the kang, then rubbed his hands together.

A-Man tilted her head, looking at the cleaver in confusion.

Wasn’t this man going to kill someone? Why did he put

down the knife?

A-Man soon got her answer.

The man suddenly lifted the thin blanket covering the

woman and squeezed onto the kang.
Jiang Si quickly pulled A-Man back, making a chopping
motion with her hand.

A-Man understood. With one hand, she grabbed the back

of the man’s clothes, and with the other, she swung hard,
striking the back of his neck.

The man let out a muffled groan and passed out, dragged
off the kang by A-Man with one hand.

Jiang Si pointed towards the door outside, and A-Man

understood, throwing the man, who was like a dead pig,
into the main hall.

Jiang Si followed her out and lightly flicked her fingernail,

sending a fine powder, almost invisible to the naked eye,
into the man’s nose.

Having inhaled this mind-numbing powder, it was enough

to ensure the man would sleep like a dead pig until dawn.

Just then, the woman on the kang suddenly sat up,

screaming hoarsely, “Niu Niu, my Niu Niu—”

Return of a Fragrant Soul
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 85: The Return of a Fragrant Soul
Separated by just a curtain, the sound of the woman
getting out of bed could be heard.
A-Man was dumbfounded.

Jiang Si pointed to the west room.

A-Man, carrying the unconscious man, ran off

immediately.

The west room was not as good as the east room, lacking
even the half-torn cloth curtain. Fortunately, it also had an
earthen kang by the window, providing a place to hide in a
hurry.

A-Man carried the man onto the kang, only then realizing
belatedly: Oh no, she had left her mistress behind.

Jiang Si, however, was much calmer. Listening to the

woman’s footsteps, she took out an object and placed it on
the ground, then stood close to the wall.

The woman walked out groggily, calling out repeatedly,

“Niuniu, Niuniu, have you come back?”

After not seeing her for some time, the once charming tofu
seller had become a mere shadow of her former self.

She seemed to be in a state between sleep and

wakefulness, completely unaware of Jiang Si’s presence
nearby. She walked straight ahead, stepping on the object
Jiang Si had just placed on the ground.

A faint sound was heard.

Madam Xiu stopped, bent down, and picked up the object.

In the dim light, the object in Madam Xiu’s hand was dark,
its outline barely discernible.

It was a hairpin.

Jiang Si wasn’t certain if the hairpin belonged to Madam

Xiu’s daughter, but it was a possibility.

The copper hairpin had fallen among the peony flowers. It

could have belonged to Madam Xiu’s daughter, or it might
have belonged to one of the previously victimized girls.

Jiang Si was using this copper hairpin to test Madam Xiu’s

reaction.

If the hairpin truly belonged to her daughter, it would

facilitate the smooth execution of the illusion later.
Madam Xiu stared blankly at the copper hairpin in her
hand for a moment, then suddenly burst out with a cry:
“Niuniu, Niuniu, you’ve come back!”

Madam Xiu seemed to awaken suddenly, rushing out like

a whirlwind, looking around the empty courtyard.

“Niuniu, come out quickly! My Niuniu, Mother misses you

so much, really misses you… Mother knew you would
come back…”

A-Man tiptoed to Jiang Si’s side, her eyes full of sympathy

as she watched the seemingly deranged Madam Xiu.

Jiang Si let out a soft sigh.

The love of parents is boundless, but Madam Xiu’s

daughter was sleeping eternally beneath the peonies,
never to return.

She couldn’t bring back Madam Xiu’s living daughter, but

at least she could help Madam Xiu seek revenge!

After crying and shouting in the courtyard for a while,

Madam Xiu opened the gate and ran out. Her heart-
wrenching cries could be heard from afar: “Niuniu, where
are you? Why are you hiding from Mother? If you just
come out, Mother will give you anything you want—”

In the middle of the night, Madam Xiu’s cries almost

spread through half the village. Soon, neighbors came out,
shouting in annoyance: “Madam Xiu, stop it! Your
daughter can’t come back. You’re disturbing everyone’s
sleep every day!”

“You’re talking nonsense! What right do you have to say

my daughter can’t come back? She has returned, she has
returned!”

There was a commotion outside, and someone else tried

to persuade: “Let it be, let it be. Madam Xiu is pitiful too.
Why argue with her? Let her cry it out. She’ll sleep when
she’s done.”

Heavy sighs could be heard.

A-Man, hiding by the gate, asked softly, “Miss, this servant

thinks Madam Xiu has gone mad. Why did you want to
find her?”

“Don’t speak in a moment, just watch.” In the darkness,

the young girl’s voice was exceptionally calm, with an
inexplicable determination beneath that calmness.
Madam Xiu, barefoot, ran around and stumbled back:
“Niuniu must be waiting for me in the house. Niuniu said
she was going to buy me osmanthus cakes…”

A-Man, despite being able to take down several men, had

a very soft heart. Hearing this, tears fell from her eyes.

So Madam Xiu’s daughter had gone missing while buying

osmanthus cakes for her mother. How pitiful Madam Xiu
was…

Seeing Madam Xiu about to run into the courtyard, Jiang

Si hurriedly returned to the west room with A-Man.

A-Man was very nervous: “Miss, what if Madam Xiu comes

to the west room?”

She could knock out that scoundrel with one blow, but she
found it hard to raise a hand against the pitiful Madam Xiu.

Jiang Si didn’t answer A-Man’s question. Instead, she

pulled out the hairpin holding up her hair, letting her black
tresses cascade down like a waterfall.

“Miss?”
Jiang Si stroked the doorframe, quietly watching outside.

Madam Xiu, with disheveled hair, ran in. Perhaps in her

haste, she stumbled forward after climbing the steps,
falling at the entrance of the main room.

The copper hairpin in her hand fell, landing not far away.

“The hairpin, Niuniu’s hairpin…” Madam Xiu stretched out

her hand and crawled forward. Her face was pale, her
expression wild, like a vengeful ghost crawling out of hell,
returning to the world of the living with despair and hope.

A-Man instinctively took half a step back.

Jiang Si turned her palm upward, and tiny points of light

emerged from her palm, flying towards Madam Xiu along
the ground with a faint glow.

The illusory fireflies entered Madam Xiu’s left ear, exited

from her right ear, and finally returned to Jiang Si’s palm.

Throughout the entire process, no one except the master

of the illusory fireflies noticed anything.
Madam Xiu was still struggling to crawl forward to reach
the copper hairpin, and A-Man still had her mouth slightly
open in shock.

At this moment, a voice softly sounded: “Mother—”

A-Man quickly covered her mouth, almost crying out as

she watched Jiang Si slowly walk toward Madam Xiu.

Oh, Miss, this is too scary!

Madam Xiu’s reaction was even stronger than A-Man’s.

She forgot about reaching for the copper hairpin and

suddenly looked up, staring blankly at the young girl
standing not far away.

The young girl’s hair reached her waist. Because there

was no light, her fair face appeared hazy in the darkness.

“Niuniu—” Madam Xiu excitedly scrambled to her feet.

The young girl’s voice was calm and steady: “Mother,

don’t come near me, or I’ll have to leave.”
Madam Xiu abruptly stopped her rush forward, speaking
incoherently: “I won’t come near, Mother won’t come near.
Niuniu, don’t go…”

After a moment, Madam Xiu gazed at her daughter in a

daze: “Niuniu, where have you been all this time? Mother
has missed you so terribly…”

The young girl let out a soft sigh: “Mother, your daughter is
already dead.”

A-Man, hiding in the west room: “…”

Madam Xiu suddenly covered her mouth, her whole body

shaking like a sieve.

She looked like she wanted to rush forward and embrace

the daughter she had been longing for day and night, but
remembering her daughter’s words, she didn’t dare move
an inch.

“Mother, listen carefully.”

Madam Xiu nodded, crying.

Jiang Si felt a pang of sympathy watching this, but she

knew this act had to continue.
She believed that this was also what Madam Xiu’s
daughter would want to tell her mother.

“Mother, your daughter was killed by the son of Marquis

Changxing. The Marquis’s son saw that your daughter
was beautiful, took her to the Changxing Marquis’s
mansion, violated her, and then killed her, burying her
beneath the peonies in their garden. Your daughter sleeps
eternally underground, hearing Mother’s calls night after
night, which is why she could come to see Mother one last
time…”

Madam Xiu bit her lip, making muffled sounds.

A tear rolled down the young girl’s cheek: “Mother, your

daughter died a terrible death. You must avenge her—”

“Revenge?” Madam Xiu’s eyes slowly moved, suddenly

flashing with a piercing cold light. “Mother will kill that
beast, kill that beast to avenge my child!”

A sigh was heard: “Mother, you must not seek revenge

directly from the son of Marquis Changxing. The
Changxing Marquis’s household is not something ordinary
people like us can challenge. If you were to be harmed by
the Marquis’s son, your daughter would not rest in
peace…”

Madam Xiu was stunned, murmuring, “How should Mother

seek revenge?”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 86: There’s Always Someone Behind the Scenes
The question of how to seek revenge indeed deserved
careful consideration.

If this revenge were to be achieved through the mutual

destruction of both the victim and the perpetrator, Jiang Si
believed it would be a failure, especially when she was
leading this revenge. It must not endanger the safety of
other victims.

This was the bottom line.

Revenge was meant to make her life more fulfilling, not to

transform herself beyond recognition for the sake of
vengeance.

“On May 19th, the upright official Master Zhen, who is

about to take office as the Prefect of Shuntian, will rest at
a post station thirty li outside the capital. If you can meet
Master Zhen and explain your daughter’s plight to him, he
will surely help you seek justice.”
The position of Shuntian Prefect was two or three ranks
higher than a regular prefect. It sounded prestigious but
was quite challenging. Many who held the position of
Shuntian Prefect couldn’t last for more than a few years,
and some even resigned after just two or three months.

Shuntian Prefects came and went like flowing water. It

wasn’t until the summer of the 18th year of Jingming that
Provincial Surveillance Commissioner Zhen Shicheng
came to the capital to assume the position of Shuntian
Prefect, finally stabilizing this role.

Zhen Shicheng was known as an upright official during his

time in the provinces. When he left, the local people
presented him with a civilian umbrella as a gift. He was
famous throughout Da Zhou for his integrity and for
championing the people’s causes.

Yu Qi had once remarked to her that Zhen Shicheng was

truly a man worthy of admiration.

Such a person might not be able to single-handedly

reverse the fortunes of a dynasty, but he was the
backbone of the common people.
The reason Jiang Si remembered the date of Master
Zhen’s arrival in the capital so clearly was that a major
event occurred on that day.

Someone had died suddenly at the post station where

Master Zhen was temporarily resting. That person was the
elder brother of Yang Fei, the newly favored imperial
consort.

Although Emperor Jingming had a firm grip on the court,

he had one weakness: he was easily swayed by the soft
persuasion and insistence of his favored consorts in the
imperial harem.

Note that there’s a key point here: the one employing this
delicate art of persuasion had to be a “favored consort,”
with emphasis on the word “favored.”

In other words, if a consort the Emperor didn’t care for

tried this, she would be met with two words: “Heh heh.”

With Yang Fei making such a fuss, the death of this

“Imperial Brother-in-law Yang” became the focus of
attention throughout the capital.

The first case Master Zhen handled upon entering the

capital was the sudden death of “Imperial Brother-in-law
Yang.” After the case was solved, he successfully
established his position and secured his role as the
Shuntian Prefect.

However, before the case was solved, Master Zhen was

quite overwhelmed.

When “Imperial Brother-in-law Yang” died suddenly, they

were both at the post station. Yang Fei inevitably directed
her anger at Master Zhen, which created many obstacles
in solving the case. Initially, Master Zhen even became a
suspect due to the slander of some ill-intentioned
individuals.

“Mother, remember, if you want to meet Master Zhen that

day, you must wait on the road before he reaches the post
station. Once Master Zhen enters the station, with guards
around, you won’t be able to see him…” The young girl’s
voice was soft as she explained in detail what to do.

If Madam Xiu could intercept Master Zhen in advance, it

would cause him to avoid being present when “Imperial
Brother-in-law Yang” died suddenly, thus sparing him
considerable trouble.

“Mother, have you remembered?”

Madam Xiu nodded repeatedly, “Yes, I’ve remembered.”

Still somewhat worried, Jiang Si cautioned again, “Mother,

you must not act impulsively. If you were to be harmed as
well, there would be no one left to seek justice for your
daughter.”

“I understand, Niuniu. Don’t worry, I will seek justice for

you.”

A gust of wind blew into the main room, causing the half-
torn cloth curtain to sway back and forth. The light in the
room dimmed further.

The young girl took a small step backward.

Madam Xiu was startled, “Niuniu—”

“Mother, your daughter must go now. Please get some

rest and take good care of yourself…”

“Niuniu, Niuniu, will you come back?” Madam Xiu was so

anxious she almost cried out, but she bit her lip hard and
didn’t dare to blink, fearing that her daughter would
disappear if she closed her eyes for even a moment.
But an irresistible drowsiness overcame her, gradually
making her eyelids as heavy as a thousand catties.
Finally, unable to resist any longer, she closed her eyes.

Jiang Si quickly supported Madam Xiu as she fell asleep.

“A-Man, help her inside.”

A-Man was still in a daze.

“A-Man.” Jiang Si sighed helplessly, emphasizing her

tone.

“Yes!” A-Man finally snapped out of it, stumbling over and

tucking Madam Xiu under her arm.

After settling Madam Xiu, Jiang Si placed the copper

hairpin she had picked up from the ground beside her
pillow.

Taking a last look at the sleeping woman, Jiang Si let out

an almost inaudible sigh and walked to the west room.

On the kang bed in the west room still lay the man who
had attempted to violate Madam Xiu in the middle of the
night.
“Miss, what should we do with this man?” A-Man asked in
a lowered voice.

“Where’s that kitchen knife?”

A-Man returned to the east room to fetch the kitchen knife.

Jiang Si took the knife and made a gesture near the man’s
lower body, coldly saying, “Chop it off.”

“What?” A-Man cupped her face with both hands, her

voice going off-key.

The shock she had received today was a bit too much.
Heaven knows she was just a frail little maid!

Yu Jin, who had been hiding in the shadows ready to

rescue his beloved at any moment, instinctively reached
down to check, feeling a chilly breeze in his nether
regions.

He must have misheard.

“Why aren’t you moving?”

“M-Miss, what did you say to chop off?”

The young girl’s expression remained calm as she said in
a matter-of-fact tone as if discussing the day’s menu,
“Naturally, the thing he uses to harm women.”

Yu Jin: “…”

He couldn’t understand what A-Si was saying at all.

“Miss, let this servant do it.” Seeing that her mistress was
about to act, A-Man took the kitchen knife with trembling
fingers.

Looking at the man who appeared innocent in his sleep,

A-Man felt a bit envious. Steeling her heart, she raised the
kitchen knife.

Yu Jin couldn’t help but hold his breath.

“Wait.”

A-Man let out a huge sigh of relief.

“Dealing with it here will leave bloodstains. Let’s take him

away first.”

A-Man hurriedly put away the knife and lifted the man.
Jiang Si checked inside and outside thoroughly, making
sure they hadn’t left any traces before leaving Madam
Xiu’s home.

The entire village was still shrouded in darkness, with only

faint lights visible in the distance by the Jinshui River.

Jiang Si walked forward without a word, while A-Man

followed closely behind, carrying the man like a dead pig.

After walking for an unknown length of time, Jiang Si

finally stopped.

She stopped in front of a house. In the faint starlight, one

could see that the courtyard walls of this household were
higher than others, with blue tiles and white walls that
looked like they had been built no more than two years
ago.

Jiang Si pointed at the doorway of this house, gesturing

for A-Man to put the man down.

“Take off his pants.”

A-Man blinked, seeing that Jiang Si was indeed not joking.

She closed her eyes and pulled down the man’s pants,
exposing his pale buttocks.
Yu Jin, who had been following the two, looked up at the
sky and let out a soft sigh.

Heaven knows how much self-control it took for him to

overcome the urge to intervene.

Did that silly girl not know that casually looking at other
men’s buttocks would cause her to grow sites in her eyes?

“Give me the kitchen knife.”

A-Man was on the verge of tears: “Miss, let this servant do

it. Don’t dirty your hands.”

“Give him one cut on the buttocks, just don’t kill him.”

After all, lacking experience, and chopping off that thing

might lead to death, which would be another troublesome
matter. Fourth Miss Jiang thought with some regret.

“Let’s go.” After coldly watching A-Man finish her task,

Jiang Si took out a handkerchief and wiped her hands.

As the mistress and maid gradually left Wang Family

Village behind, Jiang Si suddenly stopped.
“How long are you going to follow us?”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 87: Threat
“Who?” Upon hearing Jiang Si’s words, A-Man was
startled and immediately looked around nervously.

Jiang Si stared fixedly in one direction, her lips tightly

pressed together.

A tall, slender figure gradually emerged from the darkness.

“How is it you?” A-Man was astonished.

Jiang Si, however, wasn’t surprised at all.

She was too familiar with his scent, both in her previous
life and this one. Once he was close, how could she not
notice?

“A-Man, wait here. Young Master Yu, please follow me.”

Jiang Si walked forward.

Yu Jin followed with a stiff expression, though inwardly he

was extremely puzzled.

He had hidden so well, how was he discovered? Would

she think of him as a perverted stalker from now on?
The two walked about ten zhang before stopping.

Jiang Si suddenly turned around, asking with a stern face,

“Why is Young Master Yu following me?”

Yu Jin lightly touched his nose.

Since she asked so directly, he could only make full use of

his thick-skinned talent.

“Miss Jiang has misunderstood. I’m not following you, but

protecting you.”

“Protecting me?” Jiang Si raised an eyebrow. “Is Young

Master Yu treating me like a child to be coaxed? We’re
neither relatives nor friends, and I certainly didn’t ask for
your help. You appear here at this time and claim to be
protecting me?”

Yu Jin let out a soft sigh.

His voice had the clarity of a youth and the depth of a

young man. This sigh was like a morning breeze brushing
across one’s heart.

Jiang Si suddenly thought of the time after their marriage

when he would whisper in her ear countless times.
Back then, she couldn’t help but wonder how a man could
have so much to say, even enthusiastically helping her
choose what color of lip rouge to wear. In the end, that
flower-juice lip rouge ended up benefiting a certain
scoundrel…

Yu Jin noticed that the girl before him seemed to be lost in

thought.

He, a living person, was standing right in front of her, and

she was spacing out.

Yu Jin coughed lightly to bring back her attention, kindly

reminding her, “Has Miss Jiang forgotten? You’ve already
paid the protection fee.”

“What protection fee?”

“Don’t I still owe Miss Jiang a thousand taels of silver?

And Miss Jiang won’t let me sell myself to repay the
debt…” Yu Jin looked aggrieved. “But you see, I’m the
kind of person who feels uneasy owing others money. So
let’s consider that thousand taels of silver as a protection
fee. From now on, I’ll be responsible for Miss Jiang’s
safety.”
Jiang Si’s eyes grew wider as she listened.

Could it be calculated like this?

“Young Master Yu has also seen that my maid is quite

capable. I don’t need Young Master Yu’s protection. You
can continue to owe that thousand taels of silver for now.”
Jiang Si finished, giving Yu Jin a cold look. “I hope there
won’t be any more incidents of Young Master Yu following
me, otherwise I’ll have to treat you as a scoundrel.”

Yu Jin looked at Jiang Si in surprise.

She hadn’t started treating him as a scoundrel yet?

What a kind-hearted and soft girl.

What? The “good girl” he just mentioned was planning to

chop off a man’s vital part.

Heh, that kind of man who climbs over walls at night under
the influence of alcohol to harm widows, what’s the point
of keeping his vital part? Is it waiting for the New Year’s
pig slaughter?

“Young Master Yu, farewell.” Jiang Si gave Yu Jin a slight

bow, beckoning A-Man to follow.
It must be said that she was quite fortunate. The one
following her this time was Yu Qi. Based on her
understanding of Yu Qi, even if he found her actions with
A-Man strange, he would keep his mouth shut.

If it had been someone else— Jiang Si couldn’t help but

frown at the thought.

If it had been someone else, she might have had to go to

greater lengths.

She had learned her mystical arts from the Wumiao Elder,
who led the entire Wumiao tribe with her mystical abilities.

Compared to real martial arts, mystical arts could kill

invisibly, making them more terrifying and mysterious.

In the entire Wumiao tribe, there were very few girls with a
talent for mystical arts. The most outstanding would be
designated as the Holy Maiden, to be the successor of the
Wumiao Elder. The Elder and the Holy Maiden were the
spiritual pillars of the Wumiao tribe.

Holy Maiden A-Sang was the granddaughter of the

Wumiao Elder, but she didn’t become the Holy Maiden
because of her lineage.
A-Sang became the Holy Maiden due to her outstanding
talent. That’s why, after her death, for the stability of the
Wumiao tribe, they delayed announcing the Holy Maiden’s
death until she, by chance, ended up in the Southern
Frontier and lived on as A-Sang.

Although she had learned some mystical arts, in her

previous life she rarely had the chance to use them, let
alone do things like killing to silence someone.

Tonight, the person following her was Yu Qi and not a

stranger of unknown background, which saved her quite a
bit of trouble.

“Is Miss Jiang just leaving like this?” Yu Jin asked with a
smile.

Jiang Si paused her steps and looked at Yu Jin seriously:

“What does Young Master Yu mean by this?”

Yu Jin stepped forward, his uniquely male presence

instantly surrounding her: “I will tell Second Brother Jiang.”

Jiang Si, who had been full of confidence just moments

ago: “…” She wanted to kill him to silence him!
“Tell Second Brother Jiang that his seemingly frail sister
ran to a village by the Jinshui River on a night to follow a
drunk man, knocked him unconscious, and was preparing
to chop off his vital part. Oh, and she also pretended to be
a ghost…” As he spoke, Yu Jin could barely hold back his
laughter.

For so many years, the girl he admired had always been

so unique.

“What exactly do you want?” Jiang Si was thoroughly

angered.

She never knew before that this scoundrel could be so

shameless, actually doing such a distasteful thing as
threatening a girl.

Yu Jin chuckled softly: “Can’t Miss Jiang see? I’m

threatening you.”

Since playing the role of a modest gentleman couldn’t win

her favor, he might as well be true to himself.

After all, whether it’s persistent pursuit or shameless

behavior, in this life he only wanted Jiang Si.

Jiang Si was so angry she bit her lip.

He openly threatened her!

“Young Master Yu, don’t think that just because you’re my

second brother’s friend, I won’t do anything to you.” At this
moment, Jiang Si truly had the thought of teaching this
scoundrel a lesson.

“Does Miss Jiang want to silence me by killing me?” Yu Jin

took out a dagger and placed it in Jiang Si’s hand. In the
night, his starry eyes were full of mirth. “I promise I won’t
resist.”

Jiang Si gripped the dagger tightly.

The cold touch of the dagger handle calmed her down, but
she hesitated, holding the dagger without moving.

“If Miss Jiang can’t bring herself to do it—”

Jiang Si looked up at the man talking and laughing

casually before her, thinking to herself, could he be about
to say something hypocritical like “if she can’t do it, he’ll do
it himself”?

Instead, she heard the man before her say with a smile:
“Then I’ll just continue to threaten you.”
Jiang Si: “…”

She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and suppressed

the urge to kill him to keep him quiet.

“Let’s talk this over properly.”

Yu Jin chuckled softly: “That’s exactly what I want. Miss

Jiang, please come with me.”

They headed west, passing through quiet and deserted

streets and alleys until Yu Jin stopped.

“Miss, why has he brought us here?” A-Man asked.

The three had stopped at the entrance of Quezi Hutong.

“Since we’re going to have a proper talk, it’s most

convenient at home. If Miss Jiang feels it’s inappropriate,
we can go to your place as well,” Yu Jin suggested
considerately.

“You, you scoundrel—” A-Man pointed at Yu Jin, unable to

speak.
Did her mistress lose her senses at the sight of a
handsome man?

Jiang Si gave Yu Jin a sidelong glance and took the lead

walking into the alley: “Let’s go to your place.”

A-Man: “…”

Don’t talk to her, her feelings were a bit complicated!

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 88: Night Talk in the Study
The quiet of the dim alley was broken by the sound of soft
footsteps.

Yu Jin stepped forward and knocked rhythmically on the

door.

The door opened quickly, and the doorman respectfully

stepped aside.

However, Yu Jin did not enter immediately; he slightly

turned to the side and gestured for Jiang Si to go in first.
Jiang Si paused for a moment, ignoring the doorman’s
shocked gaze as she glided past.

Even as the door closed swiftly behind them, the doorman

still wore a dazed expression.

Inside the room, Long Dan was peering out the window.

Leng Ying lay on her back, breathing lightly.

“Stop pretending to be asleep! Come look, the master has

brought a girl back!” Long Dan called out excitedly to her
companion.

Leng Ying moved her eyelids slightly.

Long Dan continued to chatter excitedly, “I was wondering

why the master didn’t take me with him today. Turns out
something was going on! Wait, the girl the master brought
back is the one who came by during the day!”

Leng Ying opened her eyes expressionlessly and then

closed them again, rolling over.
It was enough to share a room with someone so gossipy.

But—did the master have a romantic interest now?

“Strange, why is Er Niu so quiet?” Long Dan wondered

aloud.

Normally, Er Niu would be more enthusiastic about such

excitement than he was.

Lying in the shadows, Er Niu lazily wagged his tail, his

mouth facing the sky.

Foolish humans, is this the time to disturb the peace?

Yu Jin led Jiang Si into the room and hesitated for a

moment in the main hall.

Although he wanted to take her to the bedroom… cough,

cough, there would be plenty of time in the future. If he
scared her off now, it would be a loss.

“Let’s go to the study.”

Jiang Si nodded.

A-Man quickly followed.

She was determined to protect the girl’s honor!

“A-Man, you wait outside,” Jiang Si said lightly.

A-Man: “……”

Yu Jin chuckled, feeling quite pleased.

Although he didn’t understand why she always looked at

him with disdain and wariness, this silly girl probably didn’t
realize that being willing to share a room with a man in the
middle of the night was enough to show her recognition of
his character.

He hadn’t expected that he held such a high place in her

heart.

Yu Jin suddenly felt a surge of confidence about the

future.

Jiang Si had never known that Yu Jin had such a place to

stay. Upon entering the study, she couldn’t help but take a
look around.

The study was simply decorated. On the right side against

the wall was a tall bookshelf, and by the window was a
long desk, casually adorned with an inkstone, a brush
washer, and a paperweight. At the other end against the
wall was a low couch.

There were no incense burners or vases, and the

bookshelf held only a few books. However, the candles in
the candlestick flickered, illuminating the entire room, very
much in line with Yu Qi’s style.

After observing all this, a thought flashed through Jiang

Si’s mind.

“Please sit; I’ll go get some water.”

“No need—”

Yu Jin had already stepped outside.

Jiang Si pressed her lips together and casually chose a

chair to sit down.

Before long, Yu Jin returned, placing a teapot and teacups

on the table, but what he poured was plain water.

“It’s not suitable to drink tea at this hour; let’s have some
warm water instead.”
Jiang Si accepted the teacup with thanks.

“What does Miss Jiang like to drink? Next time, I’ll prepare
it for you.”

The words “honey water” almost slipped out, but Jiang Si

swallowed them back down.

“No need to trouble yourself. I probably won’t bother

Young Master Yu again in the future. Let’s talk about what
happened today.”

“What does Miss Jiang want to discuss?” Yu Jin leaned

slightly forward, appearing very cooperative.

He had a pair of beautiful phoenix eyes, with pupils as

dark and bright as jewels, sparkling with captivating charm
as they shifted with his gaze.

Jiang Si pulled back a little, frowning in dissatisfaction.

It was truly inappropriate for a man she had only met a few
times to be so frivolous.

“When did Young Master Yu start following me?”

Yu Jin raised an eyebrow slightly at her question but did
not respond.

“Does Young Master Yu not want to answer?”

Yu Jin suddenly smiled: “Miss Jiang, that’s not the right

attitude for a proper discussion. Don’t forget, I’m the one
threatening you now, not the other way around.”

This girl wanted to pressure him into submission right

now? He would have to wait until she married him before
he would willingly comply.

Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath, suppressing the

urge to kill to silence her.

“What does Young Master Yu suggest we discuss?”

Yu Jin chuckled, seemingly confident that the girl across

from him would not object: “Miss Jiang, you ask a question
first, and then I will ask one. This back-and-forth will be
fair. What do you think?”

Jiang Si bit her lip lightly.

This scoundrel was indeed the type to take advantage

without suffering any loss.
In her previous life, he had coaxed her into being a
substitute for his beloved, and now that she knew the
truth, she felt deeply trapped. Just thinking about that
scoundrel’s every little action made her unable to bring
herself to use tricks like faking her death or becoming a
nun. She could only entangle herself with him while
suffering in silence, a feeling that was hard to articulate.

“Fine, let’s do it that way.”

“Then Miss Jiang, please ask first.” Yu Jin toyed with the
teacup, his gaze lightly sweeping over the girl’s fair and
delicate face.

She seemed to be angry.

Anger was also quite endearing; what should he do if he

wanted to kiss her?

The boy’s gaze suddenly darkened, landing on the girl’s

exquisitely curved lips.

It must be said that the girl was truly blessed; her lips were
naturally rosy, the most enticing shade of pink, moist, and
without a single line.
Yu Jin’s gaze grew even deeper.

Jiang Si inexplicably felt the room grow warmer.

The silhouettes of the two were cast on the gauzy window,

and for a moment, it felt as if time had stopped.

Long Dan, squatting in the courtyard, stared intently at the

window, feeling extremely anxious.

Was the master just bringing the girl back for a chat in the
middle of the night?

The phrase “wishing for iron to become steel” perfectly

encapsulated the little guard’s feelings at that moment.

“Alright, back to the previous question. When did Young

Master Yu start following me?”

“Not following, but protecting,” Yu Jin emphasized, and

seeing the girl across from him about to lose her temper,
he added leisurely, “After Miss Jiang left my place.”

“Why?”

Yu Jin chuckled lightly: “That’s the second question.”

Jiang Si took a deep breath, coldly saying, “You ask.”

“How did Miss Jiang discover that the son of Marquis

Changxing was harming women?”

Jiang Si had spoken those words as the ghost of Madam

Xiu’s daughter, and Yu Jin had heard everything clearly
from the shadows.

At that time, just the thought of Jiang Si staying overnight

at the Changxing Marquis’s mansion and then discovering
such a shocking secret about the Marquis’s son made him
wish he could tear the Marquis’s son to pieces.

Had that beast done something to Jiang Si? Otherwise,

how would a young girl know about these things?

Jiang Si sighed inwardly.

She had known he would ask this.

How to deal with the son of Marquis Changxing to ruin

him, she had already made plans and did not want to
involve others and complicate matters.

But she understood Yu Qi; if she were vague today, he

would turn around and chop the son of Marquis Changxing
into pieces to feed the dogs, clean and simple, without
hesitation.

She didn’t want to make it so easy for the son of Marquis

Changxing!

“I accidentally stumbled upon the son of Marquis

Changxing’s servant burying a body in the garden at the
Marquis’s mansion at night and overheard their
conversation.”

Yu Jin suddenly stood up.

Jiang Si, alarmed, stood in front of him: “Where are you

going?”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 89: Compensation
Their bodies suddenly drew extremely close.

She could hear his suddenly rapid breathing, while he took

in the full view of the young woman’s delicate, snow-white
neck.
On the window, their two silhouettes overlapped.

Long-dan’s mouth gaped open in shock.

Inside the room, Jiang Si realized her impropriety and

stepped back, yet still blocked the other’s path.

Yu Jin couldn’t help but smile: “Where does Miss Jiang

think I’m going? I just wanted to visit the restroom.”

Jiang Si’s face flushed.

How could a grown man so shamelessly mention going to

the restroom in front of a young lady? Why was his skin so
thick?

No, wait. The current Yu Qi was still technically a youth.

Perhaps he hadn’t yet developed a man’s sense of
propriety.

Yes, that must be why he’d made her feel so

uncomfortable since their reunion.
Yu Jin noticed the subtle changes in the young woman’s
expression and felt inexplicably displeased.

He had the feeling this girl was thinking something that

would upset him.

Yu Jin sat back down.

“Weren’t you going to the restroom?” Jiang Si regained

her composure and asked with furrowed brows.

“Since Miss Jiang is reluctant to let me leave, I won’t go,”

Yu Jin said with a serious face. “I can hold it.”

A vein throbbed at Jiang Si’s temple.

She wanted to kill this bastard!

Yu Jin suddenly leaned forward, his handsome face

abruptly magnified: “Shall we continue our chat?”

Closing her eyes, and taking a deep breath, Jiang Si

suppressed the urge to commit murder.

With a forced smile at the corners of her mouth, Jiang Si

said: “Let’s chat!”
“Then it’s my turn to ask.” Yu Jin sat up straight, smiling.

Jiang Si raised an eyebrow: “Young Master Yu just asked

me how I discovered the Heir of Marquis Chang-xing’s
crimes against women. Now it should be my turn to ask.”

The youth opposite blinked innocently: “Miss Jiang has

already asked her question.”

Jiang Si was momentarily stunned.

Yu Jin smiled: “Just now, Miss Jiang asked where I was

going.”

Jiang Si: “…”

Seeing that the young woman was truly about to explode,

Yu Jin reached out and gently ruffled her hair, his tone
unable to hide his fondness: “Alright, ask whatever you
want. I’ll answer everything truthfully, okay?”

This silly girl. He was already willing to sell himself to

repay the debt. His entire being could be hers. Yet she
was still quibbling over who asked one more question.

Jiang Si tilted her head away: “Young Master Yu, please

show some restraint!”
The hand on her head paused. Yu Jin lowered his eyes
and sighed: “I think I still need to go out for a bit. Miss
Jiang may not know, but I have a certain problem.”

“What problem?”

“When I’m in a bad mood, I want to kill someone. As it

happens, the Heir of Marquis Chang-xing isn’t a good
person. I’ll go slaughter him tonight, and Er-niu won’t have
to worry about dog food for the next few days.”

The large dog lying beside Long-dan raised its head

disdainfully, wagging its tail.

It was very picky about food!

Jiang Si stared directly at Yu Jin for a good while before

asking: “May I understand this as you threatening me
again?”

Yu Jin chuckled, his clear laughter passing through the

window to the outside.

Long Dan scratched his head, burning with curiosity.

“Young Master Yu’s behavior is unbecoming of a
gentleman.”

Yu Jin nodded: “I know.”

Could being a gentleman win the heart of the girl he

admired?

Heh. Previously, when he acted like a modest gentleman,

he could barely exchange a few words with her. But after
playing the rogue once, he managed to bring her home in
the middle of the night.

The superiority was obvious without even thinking about it.

“You’re like this—” Jiang Si wanted to say he wouldn’t be

able to find a wife, but considering his identity, she
swallowed those words.

As the Seventh Prince, how could he possibly worry about

that?

“Could it be that Miss Jiang still pities the life of the Heir of
Marquis Chang-xing?” Yu Jin asked.

Jiang Si coldly smiled: “For some people, even paying with

their life isn’t enough to atone for the evil they’ve done!”
How could one life be enough?

What about those girls in the prime of their youth who

were killed by that beast? What about the families who
painfully lost their beloved daughters?

Weren’t the Marquis Chang-xing and his wife at all

responsible for raising such a son?

She couldn’t stand by and watch the Chang-xing

Marquis’s household continue to flourish after the sudden
death of their heir, as it had in her previous life.

They didn’t deserve that outward glory!

Hearing Jiang Si’s words, Yu Jin was stunned for a

moment, then smiled.

He knew it. How could a girl who could calmly talk about
chopping off a man’s vital part be soft-hearted towards
such a beast?

In his view, that wasn’t kindness, but foolishness.

“So please, Young Master Yu, don’t meddle in my affairs

and ruin my plans.”
Yu Jin wore a troubled expression: “But if I don’t kill
someone, I can’t restore my good mood. I might not sleep
well for days. Is Miss Jiang not prepared to offer some
compensation for asking me to make such a big
sacrifice?”

Jiang Si was dumbfounded.

What exactly had he sacrificed?

But in her previous life, this scoundrel indeed wasn’t one

to follow rules and conventions. If he wanted to do
something, there was nothing he couldn’t accomplish.

Yu Qi, born into the royal family, stood out among his
brothers who were all trying to perform well for the throne.

“What compensation do you want?” Jiang Si asked coldly.

The situation with Tofu Beauty Xiu Niang-zi was

temporarily arranged, but there was still the matter at Ling-
wu Temple to resolve. She didn’t have time to waste here.

Yu Jin suddenly leaned forward and lightly pecked the

young woman’s smooth, fair forehead.
Jiang Si was as if struck by lightning, unable to react for a
good while.

“There, done,” Yu Jin said, revealing a satisfied smile.

Surprisingly, he hadn’t been stabbed. What a pleasant

surprise. It was true that fortune favors the bold.

Jiang Si finally came to her senses and raised her hand to

slap Yu Jin.

A-man, standing guard in the main hall, looked up at the

sky.

As long as the young miss didn’t suffer a loss, it was fine.

The crisp sound of the slap was heard even by the person
and dog in the courtyard.

Er-niu raised a paw to cover its eyes.

Had its master just been beaten? It was too embarrassing

to watch.

Long-dan instinctively swallowed.

He never imagined that the master would try to force
himself on the girl! But how did he end up getting slapped
instead?

“I didn’t expect the girl the master brought to be so skilled!”

“That’s because the master didn’t dodge,” Cold Shadow

said coldly, having appeared at some point.

“Why are you here?”

“If you keep crouching there, you’ll be beaten to death by

the master tomorrow.”

Long-Dan dejectedly stood up and walked towards the

side room, looking back every few steps.

Er-niu shook its fur.

This was when the advantages of being a dog became

apparent. It could watch for as long as it wanted while
shaking itself.

Looking at the young man before her with his faint smile,
Jiang Si’s hand trembled with anger.
He took liberties with her, and still acted so brazen and
nonchalant about it!

Yu Jin leaned lazily against the chair back, sporting a

bright red handprint: “Miss Jiang, let’s discuss business
now. My mood has recovered.”

“Don’t you find your recent behavior shameless?”

Yu Jin spread his hands, as thick-skinned as a dead pig

unfazed by boiling water: “But this was the compensation I
wanted. Otherwise, I’ll go kill someone.”

At this, his eyes turned, his smile alluring: “Miss Jiang,

we’re not related by blood or marriage. You don’t expect
me to agree to whatever condition you propose, do you?
That’s not how things work. If we can’t use power to
pressure people, then fair exchange is the right principle.”

Jiang Si was furious.

Where did he come up with such twisted logic?

Yu Jin’s tone changed: “Of course, while I may not be a

gentleman, I am a man. I’m willing to take responsibility for
kissing Miss Jiang. Would you be willing to marry me?”
He spoke casually, but the hand at his side clenched
tightly, betraying his inner nervousness.

Chapter 90: Rejection
Yu Jin waited for her answer with an almost reverent
anticipation. He approached her cautiously, step by step,
having wanted to ask this question for a long time. If she
was willing, he would overcome any obstacle in their path
to marriage. If she wasn’t—he would naturally wait until
she was.

Yu Jin asked the question lightly, but after her initial shock,
Jiang Si’s face turned pale with anger. He was trying to
coax her into nodding in confusion, just like in her previous
life. But back then, she at least had the status of the
Wumiao Holy Maiden, while now she was merely a young
lady from an Earl’s manor who had recently broken off an
engagement.

If she nodded, could he truly marry her as his princess

with a grand wedding procession? This thought flashed
through Jiang Si’s mind, and her head became
increasingly clear. In this life, she wouldn’t allow him to
take advantage of her again.

“I’m not willing. Please don’t make such jokes again,

Young Master Yu,” Jiang Si raised her hand, wiping her
forehead where he had kissed her with the back of her
hand.

For a moment, she thought she saw the light in the young
man’s eyes suddenly dim, but it might have been her
imagination. When she looked again, he appeared as
calm and unruffled as ever.

“Forced melons aren’t sweet. Since Miss Jiang is unwilling

for me to take responsibility, let’s forget about it and
continue our previous topic,” Yu Jin said nonchalantly.

“Speak frankly, Young Master Yu. You witnessed my

actions tonight, what do you intend to do?” The sudden
kiss had confused Jiang Si’s heart; she felt that the person
before her exuded danger from head to toe.

“I want to know Miss Jiang’s plans going forward.”

This girl was incredibly bold, daring to come to a strange

place in the dead of night to play tricks. Who knew what
shocking things she might do next?
“I will go to the temple to burn incense and pray for those
innocent women who died tragically.”

“Is that all?”

“That’s all. My Second Brother will accompany me then,

so Young Master Yu need not worry.”

Jiang Si had no intention of seeking Yu Jin’s help. Since

she had decided to stay far away from him in this life, it
wouldn’t be right to ask for his assistance when facing
troubles.

“Is Miss Jiang certain that Official Zhen will seek justice for
Miss Xiu?”

Jiang Si smiled, “There’s a saying: do your best and leave

the rest to fate. I’ve done what I can.”

“Official Zhen is a scholar of the classics. He may not

believe in ghosts and spirits.”

“A truly good official who serves the people would rather

believe such things exist in cases like this.”
That’s why she needed to make a trip to Lingwu Temple,
to find the family of another victim. When people came to
accuse the Marquis Changxing’s heir consecutively, and
for the same matter, even those who didn’t believe in
ghosts and spirits would waver.

“It seems Miss Jiang has great confidence in Official

Zhen.”

Hearing these words, Jiang Si felt emotional. To be

honest, her confidence in Official Zhen came from the man
standing before her. She had to admit, that although this
man had played with her feelings, he made her feel at
ease in other aspects. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have fallen
for him…

“I should go back now. I hope Young Master Yu will keep

his word and not mention tonight’s events to my Second
Brother.”

Yu Jin followed her out.

Jiang Si paused her steps, “Young Master Yu needn’t see

me off.”

Yu Jin smiled and pointed to the large dog lying in the

courtyard, “Let Er-niu escort you back.”
Er-niu came over, sniffing Jiang Si’s hand pleadingly.

Jiang Si was silent for a moment, then nodded.

Yu Jin stood motionless in the courtyard, watching Jiang

Si walk away with Er-niu’s company. He looked down at
his hand, recalling the scene of the young lady wiping her
forehead.

She seemed to despise him even more than he had

imagined. It was truly an unpleasant feeling.

Yu Jin took out a handkerchief and pressed it against the

wound on his palm where his nails had pierced the skin.
The snow-white cloth quickly became stained with blood.

The night deepened.

Er-niu returned and, seeing Yu Jin still standing in the

courtyard, excitedly approached him, circling.

Yu Jin reached out and tugged at Er-niu’s ears, sighing,

“How is it that I’m not as likable as you?”

Truly, humans were worse than dogs!

Er-niu whimpered twice and tucked its tail. Was it a crime
to be likable? It was innocent!

In Haitang Residence, A-Qiao kept checking the water

clock, pacing anxiously. It was so late, why hadn’t the
young miss returned? Had something happened? She
shouldn’t have allowed the young miss to act recklessly
with A-Man!

Just as A-Qiao was regretting for the hundredth time,

there was finally a sound at the door.

A-Qiao rushed out, almost flying, to welcome Jiang Si and

A-Man inside.

“Young Miss, you scared me to death,” A-Qiao looked

Jiang Si up and down, and seeing she was unharmed,
burst into tears.

Jiang Si patted A-Qiao’s arm comfortingly, “It’s alright,

nothing happened. Is the hot water ready?”

A-Qiao nodded repeatedly. The last time the young miss

returned in the middle of the night, she had bathed. She
had experience now. Heaven forbid this experience would
be needed again in the future.
Immersed in the steaming bathtub, Jiang Si was too
exhausted to even move her fingertips. This fatigue wasn’t
due to Miss Xiu’s matter but stemmed from that man.

To Yu Qi, she was a substitute for his deceased lover.

Upon suddenly discovering her existence, he would go to
any lengths to obtain her, to fill the void in his heart.

But for her, he was the only man she had ever loved, the
husband she had lived with lovingly for a year.

How could she possibly gain the upper hand in their

encounters, given their circumstances?

How pathetic!

Jiang Si covered her face with both hands and slowly sank
into the water, feeling frustrated.

The next day, a scream broke the tranquility of Wang

Family Village.

Most people in Wang Family Village had the surname

Wang, all descending from the same ancestor. Naturally,
the village head was also surnamed Wang.
Village Head Wang’s house was the only one in the village
built with blue bricks and large tiles. Last year, after his
first wife died, he married a young widow from a
neighboring village, barely eighteen or nineteen years old.

Early this morning, when the young wife opened the door
to empty a basin of water, she saw a bare white bottom.
She directly splashed the water onto that white bottom,
followed by a high-pitched scream that attracted all the
neighbors to come and watch.

“Oh my, isn’t that Gou Sheng, the old bachelor from the
west end of the village?”

They were all from the same village; did he think they
wouldn’t recognize him just because he was stripped
naked?

“Heavens, why is there a cut on Gou Sheng’s bottom?

Could it be that he had designs on the village head’s
young wife and was slashed by the village head?”

Village Head Wang listened to the villagers’ discussions

with a livid face. In the long days to come, he would
punish the old bachelor who lay naked at his doorstep
playing the hooligan, over and over again.
Amidst such a lively morning, no one noticed the girl once
praised as the village’s beauty, the tofu seller, quietly
leaving the village with a small bundle. It wasn’t until
several days later that someone belatedly realized the
mad woman who had lost her daughter hadn’t been seen
for a long time.

Jiang Si got up early to pay her respects to Old Madam

Feng, then returned to Haitang Residence for a nap. It
was nearly noon when she finally opened her eyes.

A-Man brought good news: “Young Miss, A-Fei has

returned.”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 91: I Can Kill
Jiang Si met A-fei at the newly rented place.

“Thank you for your hard work.”

After traveling continuously, A-fei looked a bit darker, but

his spirits were high.

“Miss, you’re too kind. It’s not hard work at all to serve
you,” A-fei said with a wave of his hand.

With money to earn and hope for the future, how could he
feel it was hard work?

“What happened to that person in the end?”

A-fei scratched his head, looking at Jiang Si hesitantly.

Jiang Si didn’t rush him, quietly waiting for A-fei’s answer.

She had done her best. As for how to choose, that was
someone else’s freedom.

A-fei studied Jiang Si’s expression and chuckled dryly:

“That brother came to the capital with me.”

Jiang Si put down her teacup: “Could it be that he wants to

see me?”

Besides this, she couldn’t think of any other reason for that
person to enter the capital again.

A-fei looked surprised: “Yes, he insisted on coming to see

you. I couldn’t shake him off, so I had to let him come
along.”

“Where is he?”

“I’ve temporarily settled him in an inn. Are you willing to

see him, Miss?”
Jiang Si thought for a moment, then nodded: “Arrange it.
I’ll meet him.”

A man who had spent over a decade investigating his

fiancée’s death then took his own life at her grave after
avenging her – his devotion was unquestionable, and his
persistence was alarming.

The matter with Daoist Nun Liu had finally been perfectly
resolved. If she refused to see this man and he caused a
disturbance in the capital, it would be a headache.

“Where do you plan to meet him, Miss? Would Tianxiang

Tea House be suitable?”

“That place isn’t appropriate,” Jiang Si shook her head.

This man was different from A-fei.

Although A-fei was a street ruffian, he was a native of the

capital. He wouldn’t attract attention anywhere. But if such
a man were to meet at a tea house, it would be too eye-
catching.

After some thought, Jiang Si made a decision: “Just bring

him here.”
A-fei hesitated for a moment: “Miss, are you sure you want
to meet here?”

Jiang Si smiled gracefully: “It’s just a rented house

anyway, it doesn’t matter.”

“Alright then, I’ll bring him over right away.”

Jiang Si sat patiently in a wicker chair in the courtyard,

while A-man stood beside her, fanning her with a delicate
silk fan.

The cicadas in the trees chirped incessantly.

A-man finally couldn’t hold back anymore. She tucked the

fan into her waist and tugged at Jiang Si’s sleeve, asking,
“Miss, did that scoundrel take advantage of you last
night?”

At first, when she heard that slap, she didn’t think much of
it. But later, she realized something was off.

If the miss hadn’t been taken advantage of by that

scoundrel, why would she slap him?
Jiang Si raised her eyes to look at A-man, her mood
instantly darkening: “Never mention last night’s events
again.”

A-man suddenly covered her mouth: “Then, then you were

taken advantage of. Oh my, this servant deserves to die! I
should have rushed in at that time!”

“A-man!” Jiang Si called out softly, her fair face flushing

red.

This wasn’t from embarrassment but from anger.

Thinking of that scoundrel’s audacious behavior, and how

she couldn’t bring herself to teach him a lesson at the
time, Jiang Si was angry both at Yu Jin and herself.

And now this girl was bringing up exactly what she

shouldn’t.

“Oh, it looks like A-fei is back,” A-man quickly slipped

away, seeing that her miss was truly angry.

A-fei walked in with a tall, sturdy man by his side.

“Miss, this is General Qin,” A-fei hurriedly introduced.

Jiang Si’s gaze fell on the man, and she nodded politely
but distantly.

At that time, she had no one else to use, and A-fei

happened to fall into her hands. Such a person who feared
death and knew how to maneuver was easy to control.

But the man before her was different. A person who didn’t
fear death and had no attachments in this world – she
could not manipulate him.

For such a person, it was naturally best to be polite and

see him off peacefully if possible.

“Are you the one who wrote the letter?” The man strode
forward, asking impatiently.

A-man immediately stepped in front of Jiang Si, her

eyebrows raised in anger: “Where are your manners?
You’ve frightened or missed.”

“A-man, step aside,” Jiang Si dismissed A-man, then

nodded slightly to the man, “Yes, it was me.”

“How did you know?” The man asked excitedly.

“I can’t tell you that,” Jiang Si smiled. “But General Qin,
does it matter? Isn’t it enough that you’ve achieved your
wish?”

“I—” The man clenched his fists until they cracked, staring
motionlessly at Jiang Si.

A man grew nervous.

She could sense that this man before them was no mere
fool. It might not be easy for her to handle him.

A-fei also became tense.

He had developed some camaraderie with this brother on

their journey. If the miss were to deal with him harshly,
should he plead for mercy or not?

“I have one more question to ask,” the man stared intently

at Jiang Si, as if afraid she might run away. “Just one
question.”

Jiang Si smiled naturally and warmly: “Go ahead, General

Qin.”

“Did my wife not wait for me? Has she truly been reborn?”
Seeing the man’s nervous expression, A-fei rolled his
eyes.

This brother had traveled hundreds of miles to the capital

just to ask this?

He could answer this question himself – it was a lie made

up by the miss.

Jiang Si remained silent.

She could understand this man’s behavior.

To anyone else, this would be an absurd question. But for

a man who had thought of and longed for his wife for over
a decade, it was the motivation for him to live or die.

So he traveled hundreds of miles, just to stand before her

and ask this one question to the person who had helped
him uncover the truth.

For others to ask this question would be ridiculous; for

others to answer it would be laughable.

But in this situation, the person asking was utterly serious

and devout, and he only wanted to hear the answer from
the person before him.
“What kind of person does General Qin think his wife
was?”

“She was the best girl – kind, strong, lovable…” A string of

beautiful words flowed from the man’s mouth.

Jiang Si smiled: “Since General Qin’s wife was so

wonderful, she certainly wouldn’t have stayed in hell to
suffer. I believe she was reborn long ago.”

The man’s whole body shook, and he staggered back a

few steps, suddenly covering his face.

In the sunlight, the big, rough man stood in the courtyard,

crying silently. The cicadas in the trees suddenly fell quiet,
ceasing their irritating calls.

“Well, if the brother’s wife has been reborn, she’d be a

young woman by now,” A-fei, unable to bear the heavy
atmosphere, joked.

The man paused, suddenly lowering his hands, his eyes

shining.

A-fei dared not speak anymore.

He felt he might have caused trouble.

“Hehe, brother, we’ve asked what we came to ask. Let me

take you back to the inn for a meal.”

The man shook his head: “I have no money for food.”

He had spent all his money during his last trip to the
capital to kill someone.

“I’ll treat you! Now that you’re in the capital, I can at least
buy you a meal.”

“I also have no money to return home.”

“I’ll pay for your travel expenses!” A-fei gritted his teeth.

The man looked at A-fee for a moment, then suddenly

bowed to Jiang Si: “I want to work for you, miss, to earn
my keep.”

Xi-mei had always said she wanted to see what the capital
looked like. If she had been reborn, she would probably
like it here.

He wanted to stay in the place she would have liked.

Jiang Si never expected such a turn of events. After a
moment’s hesitation, she said, “I don’t keep useless
people.”

The man revealed a confident smile: “I can kill.”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 92: Lingwu Temple
As soon as the man spoke those words, even the wind
blowing into the courtyard seemed to turn cold.

A-Fei unconsciously touched his chin, suddenly feeling

extremely fortunate to have safely made it to the capital.

How could someone speak so casually about being skilled

at killing?

“I’m very good at killing people,” the man repeated, staring

at Jiang Si.

A-Man stepped forward and scolded, “You’re a strange

one! Is it appropriate to keep mentioning killing in front of
our young miss?”

Although their young miss could stab a man’s bottom

without changing her expression, outsiders shouldn’t know
about that.
The man ignored A-Man’s words and continued to stare
steadily at Jiang Si.

Years of drinking hadn’t completely muddled his mind. He

believed that a young woman who could send him such a
letter from hundreds of miles away was different from
ordinary women.

“Very well, then I’ll have to trouble General Qin in the

future,” Jiang Si said with a slight curtsy.

The man seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. “Young miss,

just call me Old Qin. ‘General Qin’ is nothing but a joke
people make.”

“Old Qin, you’ll live here from now on. A-Fei, what are your
plans?”

A-Fei glanced around. The clean little courtyard, with lush

tree canopies providing shade in the summer, and water
lilies planted in the water vat by the door, was a better
place than he had ever lived in his life.

A fleeting struggle passed through A-Fei’s eyes, then he

smiled and waved his hand. “I’d better stay where I was
before. To be honest with you, miss, I have a few brothers
following me now. It’s convenient to have them run
errands and gather information. I’ll come here once a day.”

“Alright then. I’ll be going out tomorrow, so you and Old

Qin should prepare.”

The next day arrived in the blink of an eye.

The bright sunlight gilded everything with a layer of gold.

There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky; looking up, one
could see only azure blue. It was perfect weather for an
outing.

Jiang Zhan sat straight-backed on his horse, his moon-

white brocade robe accentuating his handsome and
refined appearance, attracting the gaze of countless
young women.

He was long accustomed to such attention and didn’t feel

the slightest discomfort. He turned his head to smile at the
young woman in the carriage, showing a mouthful of even
white teeth. “Fourth Sister, the weather is nice today.
When we reach the outskirts where no one’s watching,
Second Brother will take you horseback riding.”

A-Man poked her head out, dissatisfied. “Second Young

Master, the young miss doesn’t know how to ride a horse.
Besides, it’s not appropriate for her to share a horse with
you. Please don’t encourage such things.”

Jiang Zhan pouted. These fussy rules must have been

thought up by people with too much time on their hands,
designed to make life as uncomfortable as possible for
women.

“Fourth Sister, you should control your maid. She even

dares to speak to me like this now.” Unable to take his
sister for a horseback ride, the Second Young Master
Jiang was a bit upset and immediately tried to get the
disagreeable little maid in trouble.

“What this servant said is the truth—”

Jiang Si lightly tapped A-Man’s forehead with her finger,

chiding, “Don’t talk back to the Second Young Master.”

Jiang Zhan cast a fleeting glance at A-Man, looking smug.

When it mattered, Fourth Sister was still on his side.

A-Man covered her forehead and rolled her eyes. The

Second Young Master was competing with a maid for a
favor—how impressive.
The carriage driver wore a wide-brimmed hat for sun
protection, driving steadily from the city to the outskirts.

Sitting next to the driver was A-Ji, Jiang Zhan’s servant.

A-Ji had been secretly observing the driver beside him for
a long time, wondering when the Earl’s manor had
changed drivers.

The driver kept his eyes fixed ahead, completely ignoring

A-Ji’s curious gaze.

This driver was Old Qin.

“Fourth Sister, why did you want to go to a temple in a

small town? There are many temples, big and small, in the
capital,” Jiang Zhan, a chatterbox in front of his sister,
started up a conversation again after being quiet for only a
short while.

“I heard that temple is very efficacious,” Jiang Si said,

taking out a handkerchief and offering it to him. “Second
Brother, wipe your sweat.”

Jiang Zhan didn’t take it. “No need, I’ll just sweat again
anyway. Fourth Sister, give me a pear instead.”
Taking a bite of the round, juicy pear, Jiang Zhan sighed
contentedly. Having a sister was great; he could openly
skip his studies for several days just to accompany her to
burn some incense.

Qingniu Town wasn’t too far from the capital. By dusk, the
group had arrived at the small town.

There were only two inns in the town. In the eyes of the
Second Young Master Jiang, accustomed to the prosperity
of the capital, they were barely habitable.

“Fourth Sister, let’s go directly to Lingwu Temple.”

“It’s already so late. They might not be receiving pilgrims

anymore. Let’s go early tomorrow morning.”

“Alright then, though it’s a shame to make you suffer like

this.” Jiang Zhan booked rooms at the larger of the two
inns and bustled about for quite a while before finally
settling down.

Such inns had many security flaws. Late at night, when all
was quiet, a young man sneaked in and met with Jiang Si,
who had been waiting.
“Young Miss, I’ve made some inquiries around town, but I
haven’t heard of any family losing a daughter,” said the
young man, who was A-Fei. Following Jiang Si’s
instructions, he had arrived a day earlier and was staying
at the other inn.

A-Fei’s lack of information made Jiang Si’s mood sink

slightly.

In such a small town, not only would a missing daughter

be talked about, but even the loss of two chickens would
probably spark discussions.

A-Fei’s failure to find any information could only mean one

thing: that girl wasn’t from Qingniu Town.

Lingwu Temple was in Qingniu Town, but if the girl wasn’t

from this town, the search area would become much
larger.

“Alright, tomorrow you continue to make inquiries in town.

If I get any news at Lingwu Temple, I’ll have Old Qin relay
it to you.”

A-Fei nodded and tactfully left without asking further

questions.
Jiang Si sat alone for a while. As the fatigue from the
journey set in, she quietly lay down to sleep.

The next day was another fine day.

When the group arrived at Lingwu Temple, they were

surprised to find the small temple bustling with
worshippers, many of whom were queuing to enter.

Jiang Si carefully observed the pilgrims.

From their dress, it was clear that most of the worshippers

were common folk, though there were also some in silk
and brocade arriving by horse or ox cart, likely from other
places.

Jiang Zhan donated a considerable amount of incense

money, and the guest-receiving monk happily arranged
three guest rooms for them.

A young novice monk, about seven or eight years old, led

them to their rooms. Jiang Si took the opportunity to ask
him, “Little Master, where do most of the pilgrims come
from?”

Having received some candy, the young novice found

Jiang Si very kind and replied articulately, “Many places!
Besides people from Qingniu Town, folks from all the
neighboring villages come too.”

“Are there any ladies from wealthy families who come

often? It would be nice to have some company if we meet
them.”

“Yes, there’s the daughter of Squire Yan from Yan Village,

the ladies from Old Master Li’s family in Dayang Town…”
The young novice counted off a string of names on his
fingers, then smiled sweetly at Jiang Si. “The ladies from
these families come several times a year.”

Jiang Si silently memorized these names.

The young novice stopped walking. “Benefactors, we’ve

arrived at the guest rooms.”

Jiang Zhan pointed to the inner room. “That room has the
best view and is the quietest. Could my sister stay there?”

The young novice shook his head. “That room is already

occupied by another benefactor.”

Jiang Zhan frowned.

For such a small temple, it was understandable that there
weren’t many guest rooms, but it was surprising that they
were in such high demand.

Who was the inconsiderate person who had taken the best
room?

Just as the Second Young Master Jiang was pondering

this, the door of that guest room suddenly opened.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 93: Safety Talisman
The person who walked out was all too familiar.

Jiang Zhan exclaimed in surprise: “Seventh Brother Yu!”

Yu Jin acted as if he’d just noticed Jiang Zhan and the

others, showing a surprised expression: “Why is Second
Brother Jiang here?”

Jiang Zhan pointed to Jiang Si beside him: “I’m

accompanying my sister to offer incense. Why is Seventh
Brother Yu here?”

“Uh, I’m here to offer incense too,” Yu Jin smiled, glancing

briefly at Jiang Si without lingering, maintaining a proper
and respectful demeanor.

“Why would Seventh Brother Yu come all the way here to

offer incense?” Jiang Zhan glanced at the young novice
monk, not thinking the novices here were any cleverer
than those in the capital’s temples. Why had everyone
suddenly come to Ling-wu Temple?

Yu Jin smiled: “I heard this place is very efficacious, so I

came to make a wish.”

“Little Master, what is your temple most efficacious for?”

Jiang Zhan belatedly asked.

The young novice smiled sweetly, his missing tooth

creating a gap: “For matchmaking, of course!”

Why did such a handsome patron always ask such silly

questions?

Jiang Zhan was stunned for a moment, suddenly glancing

at Jiang Si, and then at Yu Jin.

Matchmaking?

His fourth sister had asked him to accompany her to offer

incense, and it was actually for matchmaking.

In that instant, the Second Young Master Jiang didn’t find

it amusing at all but rather felt a bit upset.
He had followed along so eagerly, only to possibly benefit
some bastard in the end.

“I didn’t expect Seventh Brother Yu to believe in this,”

Unable to direct his anger at his sister, Jiang Zhan
mocked Yu Jin instead. “You’re not much older than me,
are you already in such a hurry to find a wife?”

Yu Jin smiled, glancing at Jiang Si with deep meaning: “I

am quite urgent. A good girl might be taken by someone
else if I’m a step too late. So I’ve come to make a wish. If
the heart is sincere, the gods will respond.”

He had been away in the southern frontier for many years,

finally making a name for himself and earning the right to
return to the capital to pursue what he wanted. But he
returned to news that she was already engaged.

At that time, he had almost drawn his sword to chop up

that damned cousin, but people said Fourth Miss Jiang
was quite satisfied with the marriage.

He had temporarily spared the cousin’s dog head.

Fortunately, their engagement didn’t work out in the end.

When he heard they had broken it off, he felt as if he had
come back to life.
At that moment, he vowed never to let go again. No matter
what means he had to use, he must have Jiang Si.

He didn’t believe any other man could think of that girl as

desperately as he did.

Since marriage was arranged by parents and

matchmakers, she originally had no chance to interact with
her betrothed, let alone develop feelings for him. So why
couldn’t he be that person?

He would patiently wait for her to nod in agreement, then

seek the Emperor’s blessing for their marriage, rather than
forcing her to marry him with an imperial decree.

For the most important moment in a woman’s life, he

hoped she would be willing and happy, looking forward to
it.

Jiang Zhan became interested: “So, Seventh Brother Yu

has someone he likes?”

“Mm.” Yu Jin softly acknowledged.

“Seventh Brother Yu just came to the capital, and you
already have someone you like? Quick, tell me who this
girl is. Perhaps I can help,” Jiang Zhan pressed.

He felt Yu Jin’s appearance here was too coincidental.

This guy couldn’t be after his fourth sister, could he?

Yu Jin smiled: “I’ve known her for a long time.”

Hearing this, Jiang Zhan relaxed: “Oh, so it’s a childhood

sweetheart. Then I can’t be of much help. Seventh Brother
Yu, you’ll have to work hard!”

Yu Jin nodded solemnly: “Mm, I will.”

Jiang Si listened silently, her heart growing bitter.

The current Seventh Prince went to the southern frontier

when he was barely twelve. Who could his childhood
sweetheart be other than the Holy Maiden A-sang?

A-sang was dead, so he settled for her, someone who

looked similar. He was no better than Ji Chong-yi.

She was truly blessed in three lifetimes to encounter two

devoted men in a row.
“Second Brother, Young Master Yu, please continue your
chat. I’ll look around first.”

Yu Jin opened his mouth to say something but was pulled

away by Jiang Zhan: “What a fortunate encounter.
Seventh Brother Yu, let’s go have some tea.”

Jiang Si brushed past Yu Jin without a sideways glance.

Ignoring him? Yu Jin, unperturbed, flicked his fingers

lightly.

Jiang Si stumbled.

“Miss—”

Before A-man could react, Yu Jin had quickly steadied

Jiang Si, then immediately let go and stepped back, the
picture of a proper gentleman: “Miss Jiang, please be
careful.”

Jiang Si: “…”

“Fourth Sister, are you tired? Why don’t you rest in a room
before continuing your tour?”
“No need. Second Brother, please enjoy your tea with
Young Master Yu.” Jiang Si didn’t even glance at Yu Jin
as she quickly left.

This scoundrel wasn’t so shameless in her previous life.

Could it be that she was too easily fooled before, never
giving him a chance to show this side?

The more Jiang Si thought about it, the darker her

expression became.

“Does Miss Jiang have some misunderstanding about

me?” Yu Jin sighed softly. “Second Brother Jiang is from
an Earl’s family. Perhaps Miss Jiang feels it’s
inappropriate for Second Brother Jiang to be friends with
someone like me.”

Hearing this, Jiang Zhan hurried to explain to Jiang Si: “My

fourth sister isn’t like that. She just has a cold personality.
Seventh Brother Yu, please don’t take offense.”

It seemed he would need to advise his fourth sister later to

show more respect to his lifesaver.

The young novice, having received another packet of

sugar candies, cleverly walked beside Jiang Si,
introducing her to the temple’s situation.
“Little Master, where can I get a safety talisman?”

“Female patron, please follow this humble monk.”

The novice quickly led Jiang Si to a side hall.

Worshippers were coming and going continuously in the

hall. At the far end, a row of shelves was filled with various
safety talismans. Beside it, a monk was taking down a
talisman to give to the worshipper at the front of the line.

“Is it always this busy?” Jiang Si didn’t rush forward,

discreetly gathering information from the young novice.

“It’s not usually this crowded. Safety talismans are only

available every fifth day. The female patron has come at
just the right time,” the novice’s smile was as sweet as the
candy he’d eaten. “What kind of safety talisman does the
female patron want? This humble monk can queue for
you.”

“Uh, are there different types of safety talismans?”

“Of course! There are talismans for physical safety, for

smooth relationships, several types.”
“Can I ask for all of them?”

The novice hesitated for a moment, then nodded,

considering the two packets of candy: “If the female patron
donates more oil money, the Buddha won’t mind your
greed.”

Soon, several talismans were in hand. Jiang Si’s gaze fell

on the talisman with the words “Peace and Good Fortune”
and didn’t move away.

This was the same kind of talisman found on the female

corpse!

“This talisman, what is it mainly for?”

The novice glanced at it and smiled: “Very few patrons ask

for this type of talisman. Female patron, do you see the
line of Sanskrit text below the words ‘Peace and Good
Fortune’? This is our Buddhist exorcism mantra. Usually,
only people who have experienced accidents would ask
for this type of talisman for protection.”

Jiang Si’s heart skipped a beat.

A 13 or 14-year-old girl from a wealthy gentry family who
had experienced an accident – this narrowed down the
range considerably.

Jiang Si exchanged a glance with A-man.

A-man grinned: “Little Master, didn’t you say this place is

most efficacious for matchmaking? I imagine young ladies
like our miss wouldn’t ask for this kind of safety talisman.”

“That’s not true. The young lady from the Li family in Da-
yang Town asked for one just last month. However, that
female patron hasn’t been here for a while.”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 94: Vegetable Soup
Jiang Si instinctively felt that the identity of the female
corpse was likely connected to Old Master Li’s family from
Dayang Town.

After extracting a bit more information from the young

novice, without gaining much useful intel, Jiang Si sent A-
Man to fetch Old Qin.
“What are your instructions, Young Miss?” Old Qin had
tidied himself up a bit. The deep wrinkles at the corners of
his eyes, born of years of melancholy, marked him as a
man with a story to tell. Yet his back was straighter than
that of many men in their twenties, giving off an aura of
mountain-like stability and safety.

Jiang Si believed that a man with such experiences and

character could indeed be very skilled at killing, as he
claimed.

With Old Qin and A-Fei around, many things became

much more convenient. For instance, it would be far more
troublesome for A-Man to run out and contact A-Fei
compared to Old Qin.

“Old Qin, tell A-Fei to visit these places and make

thorough inquiries…” Jiang Si listed the villages and towns
of wealthy families whose women frequently visited the
temple, as mentioned by the young novice. She
emphasized, “Go to Dayang Town first.”

Old Qin saluted and turned to leave.

“Young Miss, have many other girls gone missing?” A-Man

couldn’t help but ask in a low voice as she accompanied
Jiang Si back to their room.
It was shocking enough that Miss Xiu’s daughter had been
killed by the Marquis Changxing’s heir, but to think there
were other victims—the heir was truly depraved!

“We’ll talk when we get back,” Jiang Si said calmly.

By noon, Jiang Zhan came to call them.

“Fourth Sister, the monks have brought vegetarian meals.

Come and eat with us.”

Jiang Si followed Jiang Zhan to the adjacent room, only to

find Yu Jin there as well.

She looked at Jiang Zhan questioningly.

Jiang Zhan smiled, “We don’t need to be so formal when

traveling. Seventh Brother Yu ordered this meal. They say
Lingwu Temple’s first-class vegetarian cuisine is quite
famous. Let’s give it a try.”

“I’m not very hungry. Second Brother and Young Master

Yu can enjoy it slowly.”

As Jiang Si turned to leave, Jiang Zhan caught her sleeve.

“Fourth Sister, not eating properly will hurt your stomach.”

Seeing Jiang Zhan’s pleading expression, Jiang Si’s heart

softened and she nodded.

Jiang Zhan was delighted. He pulled Jiang Si to sit beside

him, eagerly passing her chopsticks and placing a small
bowl of soup in front of her. “Fourth Sister, try this
vegetable soup. They say the vegetable used to be a wild
herb, but it tastes so good as soup that the temple
specifically cleared an area on the back mountain to
cultivate it. It’s a must-try for pilgrims staying at Lingwu
Temple.”

Yu Jin placed one hand on the table, his brows slightly

furrowed.

Jiang Zhan had taken all the initiative in being attentive,

what was left for him to do?

The way this brother-in-law doted on his sister was making

things much more difficult for him.

“Second Brother, you don’t need to fuss over me. I’m not a
child anymore,” Jiang Si wiped her hands and took the
chopsticks.
“Come, let’s drink tea instead of wine,” Jiang Zhan was in
high spirits, seeing Jiang Si willing to ease relations with
Yu Jin. He winked at Yu Jin.

He knew Fourth Sister was just cold by nature; she would

surely warm up to the man who had saved his life.

Yu Jin raised his teacup, smiling at Jiang Zhan.

“This tea is brewed with mountain spring water. It’s said to

be another famous offering for guests at Lingwu Temple.
Miss Jiang, please try it.”

Jiang Si took a small sip of tea and set it down. For Jiang
Zhan’s sake, she said lightly, “It tastes good.”

“Looks like coming to Lingwu Temple was the right choice.

But this place is a bit small. Why don’t we go explore the
surroundings tomorrow?” Jiang Zhan suggested.

Yu Jin nodded with a smile, “Sounds good.”

Jiang Si’s foot, hidden under the table, kicked Jiang Zhan
hard.

Was he her brother? Was he selling out his sister and

helping count the money?
Jiang Zhan winced but didn’t want Yu Jin to notice he’d
been kicked. He forced a laugh, “The tea is quite hot on
the tongue.”

Yu Jin chuckled lightly, “Indeed, it’s a bit scalding. Miss

Jiang, perhaps you should start with the vegetable soup to
warm your stomach. Traveling is never as comfortable as
being at home; we must pay extra attention to our diet.”

“Thank you for the advice, Young Master Yu,” Jiang Si

responded casually. She stirred the vegetable soup with
her spoon, lifted a spoonful to her lips, but then stopped.

Jiang Zhan had already drunk several mouthfuls. Seeing

Jiang Si hesitate, he asked puzzled, “Why aren’t you
eating, Fourth Sister? This soup is delicious.”

Jiang Si simply put the spoon down.

“What’s wrong?” Jiang Zhan grew more confused. He took

another spoonful, “It’s very tasty, fragrant, and smooth.”

How could Fourth Sister dislike it before even tasting it?

Jiang Si scooped up another spoonful of soup and held it

near her lips, but still didn’t eat.
Now Jiang Zhan couldn’t eat either, “Fourth Sister, if you
don’t like it, just eat something else. Don’t force yourself.”

Jiang Si stared at the emerald-green soup, her brows

furrowing deeper. She put the spoon back in the bowl and
stated firmly, “Something’s not right with this flavor.”

“What’s not right? Fourth Sister, you haven’t even tasted it

yet,” Jiang Zhan was completely bewildered.

Jiang Si smiled slightly, “The smell is enough; I don’t need

to taste it.”

“What exactly is wrong with it?” Jiang Zhan put down his
chopsticks, losing interest in the delicacies before him.

He felt that Fourth Sister didn’t seem to be joking. Could

someone have drugged the food?

Was what he ate a knockout drug or poison? Damn, it

couldn’t be an aphrodisiac, could it?

Seeing the Second Young Master Jiang’s expression

change rapidly, Yu Jin patted his shoulder, “Brother Jiang,
let’s hear what Miss Jiang has to say.”
“Fourth Sister, was it drugged?”

Jiang Si couldn’t help but laugh, “Second Brother, where

has your mind gone?”

“That’s a relief,” Jiang Zhan sighed deeply.

He had eaten the most, while Seventh Brother Yu and

Fourth Sister hadn’t touched the soup at all.

“But this soup has a foul odor—” Jiang Si looked at Jiang

Zhan sympathetically, but continued, “It smells like the
scent of a decaying animal corpse dissolved in water…”

Jiang Zhan’s face turned pale. Seeing that Jiang Si’s

expression didn’t look like she was joking, he rushed out.
Soon, the sound of retching came from outside.

For a moment, only Yu Jin and Jiang Si were left in the

room.

“Is there a foul smell?” Yu Jin scooped up a spoonful of

soup and sniffed it, but couldn’t detect any unusual odor.

“Could it be that Miss Jiang is playing a prank on Second

Brother Jiang?” Yu Jin suddenly thought of this possibility.
Had Jiang Zhan become her outlet for frustration just
because he inadvertently helped him?

Jiang Si’s gaze fell on the spoon near Yu Jin’s lips. She
nodded, “Mm, I was just teasing Second Brother.”

Yu Jin smiled, his lips parting slightly as if about to eat the

soup.

Jiang Si watched closely but saw him put the spoon down
again.

Meeting the young woman’s slightly surprised gaze, the

young man smiled faintly, “I think you’re lying to me.”

Jiang Si couldn’t help but bite her lip.

The enemy was cunning, much sharper than Second

Brother.

Jiang Zhan returned, leaning against the doorframe and

panting heavily. It took him a while to calm down before
walking over.

“Fourth Sister, you weren’t just teasing me, were you? If

this is a joke, Second Brother will be angry.”
Looking at her pitiful brother, Jiang Si frowned in distress.

She wished she could say it was just a joke, but that smell
was too familiar—she had smelled it not long ago.

As Jiang Si reacted, Jiang Zhan’s heart sank. He slammed
his fist on the table, exclaiming, “How could such a fiasco
occur with high-quality vegetarian cuisine? I’ll go settle
accounts with those baldy monks!”

“Second Brother Jiang, please calm down,” Jiang Zhan’s

temple throbbed with anger as he replied, “Seventh
Brother Yu, why are you stopping me? Their food reeks of
decay. It’s disgusting! I won’t be satisfied until I give those
baldy monks a good thrashing.”

Just thinking about it made his stomach churn again.

Yu Jin glanced at Jiang Si and asked Jiang Zhan with a

half-smile, “Second Brother Jiang, can you be certain that
the putrid smell in the food comes from animal carcasses,
or could it be… human?”
Jiang Zhan froze, his handsome face turning deathly pale
after a moment. “Seventh Brother Yu, such jokes can be
deadly!”

“Indeed, perhaps someone has already died,” Yu Jin

leaned back lazily.

“Wait, let me process this,” Jiang Zhan closed his eyes

briefly, then suddenly stood up and quickly walked to the
door, closing it. He leaned against the wooden door,
drenched in cold sweat.

“Fourth Sister, I really can’t smell anything,” Jiang Zhan

rubbed his nose and looked at Yu Jin. “Seventh Brother
Yu, what about you?”

Yu Jin shook his head, “I can’t smell it either.” He then

gazed deeply at Jiang Si and said without hesitation, “But I
believe what Miss Jiang says.”

Jiang Zhan blinked, nearly bursting into tears. Damn it, he

believed her too!

“So, you’re saying I ate food cooked in water that had

corpses soaking in it?” Jiang Zhan looked at his calm little
sister with an expression of near breakdown.
“It’s just a possibility,” Jiang Si said reluctantly.

Jiang Zhan’s eyes lit up with hope, “Are there other

possibilities?”

“Perhaps it’s the corpses of cats or dogs…”

Jiang Zhan crouched on the ground, covering his mouth.

Just let him die!

“What about the other dishes?” Yu Jin suddenly asked.

Rather than dwelling on the disgust of eating these dishes,

he was more interested in understanding what was
happening. Of course, the key was that he hadn’t eaten—
ahem, such an unkind thought naturally couldn’t be
expressed.

Jiang Si picked up a piece of braised tofu closest to her

and sniffed it, then put it down and smelled the other
dishes one by one. Finally, she stated confidently, “The
other dishes are fine. Only the vegetable soup has an odd
smell.”

Yu Jin breathed a sigh of relief, “Then let’s eat first and

discuss this later.”
Jiang Zhan’s face wrinkled like a bitter gourd, “Don’t
mention ‘eating.’ I just want to vomit.”

Jiang Si nodded, “Mm, let’s eat first.” They needed energy

to discuss other matters.

The two of them picked up their chopsticks and began

eating quietly.

Jiang Zhan stood up, his face devoid of hope, “You two
eat slowly. I need to go out and clear my head.”

In the blink of an eye, only two people remained in the

room.

Yu Jin put down his chopsticks, “How long do you plan to

stay at Lingwu Temple?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Why don’t we go to an inn instead?”

Jiang Si gave Yu Jin a cool look and bluntly said, “Young

Master Yu, you’re being overly familiar given our short
acquaintance.”
“Overly familiar?” Yu Jin suddenly leaned forward and
whispered, “That night—”

“Shut up!” Jiang Si’s face turned red with anger. “Young
Master Yu, how are you any different from a scoundrel?
Disregarding a lady’s feelings and doing whatever you
please. If it were your sister being so casually treated by
another man, what would you do?”

Yu Jin stared intently at Jiang Si, suddenly reaching out to

hold her hand, asking earnestly, “What are your true
feelings?”

Jiang Si was momentarily dazed by his sincerity.

Jiang Zhan pushed open the door, “Have you finished

eating?”

Jiang Si tensed up and hurriedly said, “We’re done.” Only

then did she realize she had forgotten to withdraw her
hand?

Under the table, the young woman tried to pull her hand
back forcefully, but the large hand gripped even tighter.

“Not yet finished,” Yu Jin said nonchalantly.

But in his heart, he was overjoyed.

He had a vague understanding of her feelings after that

night when he had acted a bit roguishly.

He didn’t believe that a girl with such strong opinions

would tolerate a man she didn’t like touching her so
casually, as she was doing now.

This girl’s words didn’t match her heart. What would

happen if she admitted her feelings for him?

Jiang Si glared at Yu Jin, as if guessing his thoughts, and

coldly thought two words: I’d die.

Not only would she die of heartbreak for foolishly falling in

love, but she would also meet a bad end because of the
damned identity of the Seventh Prince’s consort.

“Seventh Brother Yu, I’m truly amazed. You can still eat in
this situation.”

Only then did Yu Jin release Jiang Si’s hand, flashing a

brilliant smile at Jiang Zhan, “Well, then let’s stop eating.”

Jiang Zhan was momentarily stunned.

Why smile so charmingly for no reason? His sister was still
here!

“I’ve been thinking,” Jiang Zhan analyzed seriously, “since

only the vegetable soup has an odd smell and the other
dishes are fine, either the water used to make the soup is
the problem, or the water used to irrigate the wild
vegetables is the issue. What do you think?”

Yu Jin nodded, “Second Brother Jiang makes a good

point. However—what does this have to do with us? In my
opinion, since the food doesn’t suit our taste, we should
leave here as soon as possible.”

Jiang Si rarely agreed with Yu Jin, “That’s right, Second

Brother. Since the water here isn’t clean, we should go
stay at an inn.”

Her purpose for coming here was clear, and she didn’t
want to create unnecessary complications.

Jiang Zhan frowned, “Aren’t you curious? What if

someone died?”

Both of them shook their heads.

“Alright then, Fourth Sister, you take a nap, and we’ll leave
this afternoon,” Jiang Zhan compromised, seeing no one
agreed with him.

Jiang Si stood up, “Then I’ll go rest.”

Yu Jin also stood, “I won’t disturb you anymore, Second

Brother Jiang. You vomited so much earlier, drink some
hot water and rest.”

“Don’t mention water…”

Jiang Zhan didn’t have the energy to call his servant A-Ji
to clean up the mess on the table. After the two left, he
simply lay down on the bed and closed his eyes in
frustration.

A noise made Jiang Zhan open his eyes.

Before him stood a woman with disheveled hair, her body

dripping wet.

“Who are you?” Jiang Zhan was startled.

The woman raised her pale hand to brush aside the long
hair covering her face, revealing a ghastly white, bloated
face. She grinned hideously at Jiang Zhan, “You drank my
bathwater, so you must take responsibility…”

Jiang Zhan sat up abruptly, gasping for air.

Outside the window, the sun shone brightly at its zenith,

but he felt as if he had fallen into an icy pit in the dead of
winter, chilled to the bone.

After much internal struggle, Jiang Zhan got out of bed.

He had to investigate; otherwise, he’d never sleep soundly

again.

Walking out of the room, looking at the other quietly closed

doors, Second Young Master Jiang wiped away a tear.

Of course, they could leave with peace of mind—they

hadn’t drunk a female ghost’s bathwater!

The temple was still bustling at this time. As Jiang Zhan

walked out, he saw a monk carrying a food box to deliver
vegetarian meals to other worshippers.

Jiang Zhan approached him, lavishing praise on the

vegetable soup until the monk beamed with joy. Then he
seized the opportunity to ask, “Besides the wild vegetables
being delicious on their own, perhaps there’s some secret
to the water used for the soup?”

The monk smiled modestly, “Just as we use spring water

to make tea for our esteemed guests, the wild vegetables
for the soup are specially irrigated with water from a well
dug in the back mountain. That’s why the vegetables taste
so good.”

Jiang Zhan cursed inwardly: Damn it, they didn’t wash

today’s vegetables!

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 96: Well Water
At high noon, no monks could be seen on the back
mountain of Lingwu Temple. Only a patch of lush green
vegetables lay listlessly basking in the sun.

Jiang Zhan stood in the open wilderness, looking around.

He quickly spotted a well not far from the vegetable patch.

He walked over briskly, leaned on the cool well wall to

gather his courage, and peered inside.

The well was deep and dark, its contents unclear.

Jiang Zhan sniffed hard.

He couldn’t smell anything unusual.

His gaze fell on the well frame.

Perhaps he should draw up a bucket of water to examine?

Jiang Zhan reached for the handle but suddenly jumped

and turned around.

A young monk stood not far behind him.

Jiang Zhan’s back went cold, but he plastered an amiable

smile on his face. “Master, you startled me by standing
behind me.”

The young monk pressed his palms together and bowed

to Jiang Zhan, asking, “Why is the benefactor here? Our
back mountain is not open to visitors.”

“Oh, is that so?” Jiang Zhan inconspicuously took a few

steps to the side, widening the distance between himself
and the young monk. “I had your temple’s famous
vegetable soup for lunch. It was so delicious, it left my
mouth watering. I asked a monk about it, and he said the
wild vegetables used in the soup must be grown on your
temple’s back mountain and watered from a special well to
achieve that flavor.”
Jiang Zhan remained inwardly cautious, but his expression
remained natural. “Master, you see, I have no other
hobbies except for good food. After hearing what that
monk said, I couldn’t help but come here to see what
these wild vegetables look like and taste the well water.
That way, I might be able to buy some when I return
home.”

The young monk smiled. “These wild vegetables were

transplanted here by our master uncle from deep in the
mountains years ago. They’re not sold elsewhere, I’m
afraid the benefactor will be disappointed.”

Jiang Zhan indeed looked greatly disappointed. “Is that

so? It seems if I want to taste this again, I’ll have to return
to your esteemed temple.”

The young monk looked even more pleased. “Many

benefactors come to offer incense every few days.
Besides the temple’s efficacious incense, it’s also for this
soup.”

Jiang Zhan’s anxiety eased by half.

If there were truly something unspeakable in the well-

connected to this monk, he shouldn’t be so complacent.
This was good; at least for now, there was no worry about
wanting to silence each other.

With these thoughts, Jiang Zhan relaxed further and

casually struck up a conversation with the young monk.
“It’s the hottest part of the day. Why isn’t Master resting
well and instead coming here?”

The exceptionally handsome youth’s face bore a likable

smile, undoubtedly very appealing. The young monk
couldn’t help but complain, “These wild vegetables are
most delicate. At this time, they need watering…”

Jiang Zhan chuckled upon hearing this.

So this young monk was also being picked on, and

assigned to do such hard labor.

“Benefactor should leave soon. This humble monk needs

to work now.” The young monk walked towards the well,
skillfully turning the handle.

A creaking sound came as he drew up a bucket of water.

Jiang Zhan couldn’t help but crane his neck to look.

“Benefactor?”
“Master, it’s so hot, and you’re drawing water alone. How
tiring! I’m free anyway, let me help you water the
vegetables.”

“How can that be?” The young monk lifted the water
bucket and walked towards the vegetable patch.

Jiang Zhan persisted, following him. “Please don’t refuse,

Master. This is my sincere offering to Buddha. Perhaps
seeing my sincerity, Buddha will grant my wishes soon.”

Hearing this, the young monk couldn’t refuse and nodded.

Amitabha, may Buddha bear witness, he wasn’t lazy.

The water drawn from the dark well was surprisingly clear,
with no detectable odor.

After watering about eighty percent of the vegetable patch,

Second Young Master Jiang, exhausted beyond measure,
sat on the ground panting, all dignity forgotten.

He wanted to have a good talk about life with Fourth

Sister.
“Thank you for your help today, benefactor. Please go rest
now.”

Seeing Jiang Zhan still wanting to push himself, the young

monk smiled, “Benefactor’s face is about to peel from the
sun.”

Jiang Zhan: “…”

Seeing that he truly hadn’t found anything unusual, Jiang

Zhan dusted himself off and stood up. “Then I’ll take my
leave. By the way, may I know Master’s name?”

The young monk pressed his palms together towards

Jiang Zhan. “Amitabha, this humble monk is Si Kong.”

“Master Si Kong, may we meet again if fate allows.” Jiang

Zhan smiled and cupped his hands in farewell, though he
knew in his heart such pleasantries were mere formalities.
Once he left Lingwu Temple, he would surely have no
more interactions with the people here.

“Farewell.” The young monk watched Jiang Zhan leave,

then sat at the edge of the field to rest for a while before
walking back to the well.
He had come earlier than usual today, and with the help of
the enthusiastic benefactor, he could soon return to rest.

The young monk, having regained his strength after

resting, quickly drew up another bucket of water. This
time, however, he didn’t immediately carry the water back.
Instead, he stared at the bucket with a shocked
expression.

In the bucket, about three-quarters full, the well water

remained clear, but there was something extra.

It was a shoe.

How could a shoe be drawn up from the well?

The young monk’s expression became uncertain and

fearful as he considered a possibility.

Could it be that one of the senior monks had fallen in?

No, that couldn’t be right. During morning prayers, no one

had been reported missing—

The young monk set down the bucket and took a heavy
step forward, leaning over the well to peer down.
“Si Kong, what are you looking at?” A familiar voice came
from behind, sending chills down the young monk’s spine.

Jiang Zhan quietly left the back mountain, only to find

Jiang Si waiting nearby with Yu Jin.

Jiang Zhan smiled as he approached them. “Oh? Fourth

Sister, you’ve already finished your midday rest?”

“Where did Second Brother go?” Jiang Si asked with a

stern face.

“Just wandering around.” Jiang Zhan looked up at the sky,

changing the subject, “How did you two end up together?”

“We met by chance and saw Second Brother Jiang doing

a good deed, so we didn’t disturb you,” Yu Jin said.

Jiang Zhan was greatly embarrassed. “Oh, you both saw

that?”

“Let’s talk after we leave this place. It’s past noon, and
people will start coming this way soon,” Jiang Si said
sternly.
The three returned to the guest room. Jiang Zhan gulped
down a pot of water before stopping. “Fourth Sister, what
are you unhappy about?”

Jiang Si raised an eyebrow. “Second Brother still has the

nerve to ask? Running off alone to someone else’s back
mountain, aren’t you afraid of an accident?”

Before Jiang Zhan could respond, Yu Jin chuckled softly.

This girl was truly a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Who was it that followed a drunk man in the middle of the
night?

However — this probably proved how important Jiang

Zhan was to her.

Concern breeds anxiety.

Yu Jin glanced at the wronged-looking Jiang Zhan,

suddenly feeling a twinge of jealousy.

“Fourth Sister doesn’t know, but after you left, the ghost
appeared in my dream! But there was nothing unusual on
the back mountain. The monk and I took turns drawing
dozens of buckets of water, and we didn’t even find a bird
feather.”
“Then Second Brother shouldn’t worry about these things
anymore. When it cools down a bit, let’s leave.”

Jiang Zhan could only nod.

But outside, the sun was still glaring, even as the temple
bells began to ring.

Chapter 97: Another Accident
Melodious bell tolls echoed through Lingwu Temple,
startling birds into flight from the trees.

The worshippers were unsettled, unsure of what had

happened.

Fortunately, there weren’t many visitors in the afternoon,

and soon monks came to arrange for everyone to leave.

Yu Jin opened his door immediately.

Morning bells and evening drums – bells ringing at this

hour usually meant an emergency.

Soon, Jiang Si and Jiang Zhan emerged from their

respective rooms.
The three stood under the corridor, looking outward.

A monk hurried over, bowing with clasped hands before

the trio: “Amitabha. There’s been an incident at the
temple. Please don’t wander around, for now, patrons.”

Yu Jin raised an eyebrow and smiled, “Master, that’s a bit

unreasonable. We’re visitors, not prisoners here. Why
should our freedom be restricted?”

The monk was taken aback.

Something had happened at the temple, and he was

ordered to inform the staying guests. How could someone
be so difficult?

Though small, Lingwu Temple was renowned far and wide

with prosperous incense offerings. The monks naturally
wouldn’t damage the temple’s reputation by being fierce or
evil. After the initial shock, he patiently explained, “Patron,
you misunderstand. I’m informing you because the temple
is in some disorder now. We fear you might be
inconvenienced.”

“Oh, I see,” Jiang Zhan seized the opportunity to ask,

“May I ask what happened at your esteemed temple?”
The monk paused again, then realized the trio’s age.

Teenagers in their mid-teens are naturally curious, so

such a question wasn’t surprising.

As the monk hesitated, Jiang Zhan exclaimed in surprise,

“Could it be something that can’t be told to outsiders?”

The monk thought, “…You know that, yet you still ask!”

But since he had been asked directly, not answering might

lead to wild speculation. For temples like theirs that
received many female worshippers, this was taboo. So the
monk said, “One of our junior brothers has entered
nirvana.”

Jiang Si and Yu Jin exchanged a glance.

Catching his gaze, she hurriedly looked away, inevitably

feeling annoyed: Could it be that her brother was so
unreliable that she instinctively wanted to see his reaction
when something happened?

Jiang Zhan made a surprised sound, “Nirvana? Master,

you look so young. Your junior brother must be even
younger, right? How could someone so young have
achieved perfect virtue already?”
The monk’s mouth twitched. He silently chanted
“Amitabha” to suppress the urge to transform into the
Monkey King, and explained, “My junior brother passed
away due to an accident—”

“An accident? What kind of accident?” Jiang Zhan looked

frightened, “Your temple seems so peaceful. Could there
be some danger? Shouldn’t you have warned us visitors
earlier?”

“Amitabha, patron, you worry too much. There’s no danger

in the temple. My junior brother had an accident while
fetching water—”

Jiang Zhan dropped his exaggerated expression and

asked after a moment of silence, “May I ask what the
master’s Dharma name was?”

Though puzzled, the monk still answered Jiang Zhan’s

question: “My junior brother’s Dharma name was Si Kong.”

Jiang Zhan took half a step back.

The monk finally got a chance to leave. Chanting

“Amitabha” once more, he hurried towards another row of
guest rooms.
Jiang Zhan stood dazed. Yu Jin patted him on the
shoulder.

Startled back to his senses, Jiang Zhan glanced at the

departing monk and lowered his voice, “Fourth Sister,
Seventh Brother Yu, do you know? The monk watering the
garden in the back mountain at noon was called Si Kong!”

“Second Brother suspects that monk didn’t die by

accident?”

“Of course! How could it be such a coincidence!” At this

point, Jiang Zhan frowned, “But there was nothing unusual
at noon. How could he have died?”

“It’s not hard to guess. It means there was indeed

something in that well, and after Second Brother Jiang left,
that monk discovered it, so—” Yu Jin smiled faintly, “He
was silenced.”

Jiang Zhan slapped his forehead in frustration, “If I had

known, I would have persisted to the end.”

Yu Jin smiled, “If that were the case, there might have
been one more accident.”
Jiang Zhan was stunned, then said dissatisfied, “Seventh
Brother Yu, are you cursing me? If I had stayed there,
nothing would have happened to me.”

“Why?”

“Seventh Brother Yu would save me,” Jiang Zhan said

matter-of-factly.

Even the thick-skinned Yu Jin couldn’t help but twist his

expression for a moment.

Looking at the sky, Yu Jin asked Jiang Si in a questioning

tone, “It’s getting late. Shall we leave?”

“Wait—” Jiang Zhan grabbed Yu Jin’s arm, “We can’t just

leave like this!”

“Hm?” Yu Jin stared at the hand on his arm, quite

displeased.

How improper to be so handsy in front of A-Si!

“Someone died, and possibly more than one person!”

“So?”
“So shouldn’t we catch the murderer?” Jiang Zhan looked
bewildered seeing that both seemed uninterested.

Yu Jin said flatly, “We didn’t kill anyone, and they’re not
related to us.”

Trying to catch a murderer on someone else’s territory, if

the killer was one of the monks, with a little instigation,
facing a temple full of monks, let alone finding the culprit,
even escaping would take some effort.

With Jiang Si present, Yu Jin didn’t want to do such a

thankless task that would get the three of them into
trouble.

“But can our consciences bear to ignore such a thing?”

Jiang Zhan persisted.

Another person had died. What if he closed his eyes and

two ghosts came to chat with him?

Yu Jin looked at Jiang Zhan amusedly, “Conscience? I

don’t have one.”

“Seventh Brother Yu, I can’t believe you’re this kind of

person!” Jiang Zhan clutched his chest in exaggerated
dismay.
He thought this was Yu Jin’s joke, so he responded with
an exaggerated joking tone.

Seventh Brother Yu was very kind-hearted. Despite being

strangers, hadn’t he saved him before?

Having a sense of justice but not showing it, Seventh

Brother Yu was truly a rare good person.

“I don’t have one. My heart—” Yu Jin glanced lightly at

Jiang Si and said nonchalantly, “I’ve lost it.”

Jiang Si lowered her gaze.

Still flirting with her at a time like this, he was too much!

“Second Brother, let’s go. I’m a bit scared,” Jiang Si said

softly as she saw other guests emerging from their rooms.

Jiang Zhan held his head, “I’m so confused. How could I

forget that Fourth Sister is a young lady? Of course, you’d
be scared in this situation. Fourth Sister, it’s all Second
Brother’s fault. Let’s go now.”

Fine, if ghosts wanted to chat with him, let them chat.

Maybe if the two ghosts hit it off, they’d leave him alone.
A-Man, the little maid who had been standing like a
wooden stake, gave Jiang Zhan a sympathetic look.

Second Young Master was truly naive. Their young miss,

scared? Heh.

Hearing that they wanted to leave, the monks were more

than happy to see them off.

The group hurried back to the inn. Under the big tree
outside, many people were already gathered, discussing
the incident at Lingwu Temple as they enjoyed the cool
air.

“I heard that monk slipped while fetching water and hit his
head on the edge of the well. His head was bloody and
broken on the spot. How pitiful.”

“That’s why they say fate is predetermined…”

As the sun was about to set, A-Man found an opportunity

to quietly report, “Young Miss, A-Fei sent a message
through Old Qin. He said the first place you asked him to
inquire about, was the Li family’s house in Dayang Town,
their young miss came to Lingwu Temple to offer incense
today and hasn’t returned yet…”

Matter
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 98: Our Matter
After hearing this, Jiang Si felt inexplicably uneasy.

From the information she had gathered from the young

novice monk, she suspected that the girl most likely
related to the female corpse in Changxing Marquis’s
garden was the daughter of Old Master Li from Dayang
Town.

A Fei had found out that Miss Li came to offer incense at

Lingwu Temple today, but the young novice said that Miss
Li hadn’t been here for a while.

Did the young novice not notice Miss Li’s visit to Lingwu
Temple, or was he intentionally concealing something?
Thinking of the young novice’s innocent smile, Jiang Si
shook her head slightly.

With so many visitors coming to Lingwu Temple, the

young novice might not have noticed.

But the person she thought was most relevant was now
connected to Lingwu Temple, and Lingwu Temple had just
experienced a murder case—

Jiang Si pondered for a moment, then instructed A Man to

call A Fei.
“Miss, what are your instructions?” A Fei slipped quietly
into the inn.

“How many places did you inquire about today?”

“I inquired about two towns and five villages in total…” A

Fei reported the places he had visited to Jiang Si, “I didn’t
hear about any major incidents in any family.”

“Is Dayang Town far from here?”

“Not far, only a few li away.”

Jiang Si looked up at the sky.

The sun was about to set, dyeing the western horizon a

warm orange-red. The whole sky was still bright, far from
the time of light lamps.

“What does Old Master Li do?”

“Old Master Li is a well-known wealthy man in Dayang

Town. They say he’s also a Xiucai…” A Fei eloquently
recounted the information he had gathered.

In the Great Zhou Dynasty, becoming a Xiucai was not

easy. Many scholars spent their whole lives unable to
shed the status of Tongsheng. Especially in such small
towns, producing a Xiucai was practically a glory for the
entire town.

Hearing A Fei’s explanation, Jiang Si understood that this

Old Master Li had some prestige in Dayang Town.

“Has the news of the Lingwu Temple monk’s accidental

death reached Dayang Town yet?”

“On my way back, I heard people discussing it on the

road.”

The worshippers at Lingwu Temple came from all around,

and news would spread at an astonishing speed.

Jiang Si furrowed her brow in thought.

A Fei observed Jiang Si’s expression, tactfully remaining

silent.

After about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, Jiang Si

finally made up her mind: “A Fei, hire some idle men to go
to Old Master Li’s house in Dayang Town and report that
Miss Li was pushed into the well on the back mountain of
Lingwu Temple and killed. If they don’t hurry to retrieve
her, they won’t be able to seek justice for Miss Li…”
A Fei was stunned: “Miss, what evidence is there for this?”

Jiang Si pursed her lips: “In such a time of panic, if Old

Master Li truly loves his daughter, this kind of rumor would
be enough.”

She wasn’t sure if anything had happened to Miss Li. If her

guess was right, at least it wouldn’t let a person disappear
without a trace. If she was wrong, given the Li family’s
reputation, they would at most be laughed at for a while,
with no substantial loss.

Most importantly, she had a feeling that Miss Li might be

the key to unraveling this mystery.

“A Fei, go now, don’t just stand there.”

A Fei hesitated unusually: “Miss, we’re outsiders after all.

Who knows if those idle men can be trusted—”

Jiang Si smiled: “They can be trusted if given enough

silver. If you still think they can’t be trusted, it means the
money isn’t enough…”

A Fei slapped his forehead: “Miss is right!”

Wasn’t he once that kind of idle man himself? As long as
he was paid, he would do anything, let alone just pass on
a message!

A Fei cupped his hands and left. Jiang Si was about to

return to her room when she saw Yu Jin approaching.

“You think that Miss Li is in the well?”

Jiang Si looked at him with a stern face: “Do you enjoy

eavesdropping on others’ conversations so much?”

“I wasn’t eavesdropping, I just have good hearing.” Yu Jin

smiled helplessly, “Miss Jiang, let’s not argue about this
now. Let’s talk about the important matters.”

“Mr. Yu, this is my business.” Jiang Si said

expressionlessly.

How could she shake off this nuisance?

Yu Jin stared at Jiang Si, suddenly smiling: “It’s not up to

you to say. This is our business. Don’t forget that night—”

Jiang Si took a deep breath silently, deciding not to

engage in a battle of wits. She turned the topic to the
matter at hand: “The timing doesn’t match up.”
Yu Jin pondered briefly and understood: “Miss Li came to
offer incense today, and the well water wouldn’t produce
an odor so quickly. In other words, even if someone did
die in the well, it’s unlikely to be Miss Li. That being the
case, why did you instruct that boy to spread the message
—”

“I just think that the cause of the well water’s odor

probably isn’t closely related to Miss Li, but that doesn’t
mean Miss Li, who hasn’t returned home, hasn’t met with
trouble.”

Yu Jin nodded with a smile: “That’s true.”

Jiang Si looked up at the brilliant sunset, her voice

softening: “Besides, isn’t Second Brother very eager to
know if there’s a corpse in the well? This will set his mind
at ease.”

Yu Jin rubbed his nose.

He hated sibling affection the most!

“Here, take this.” Yu Jin handed Jiang Si a folded square

of paper.
Jiang Si looked at the paper without immediately taking it:
“What is this?”

Surely it wasn’t some nonsensical note?

“If you’re afraid to look, I’ll put it away.”

Jiang Si glanced at him and said coolly: “Indeed, I don’t

want to look. I’m leaving.”

Yu Jin grabbed her wrist, sighing: “Why are you always

like a hedgehog, ready to prick others at any moment?
Can’t you cooperate a bit?”

“Let go!”

“Alright, since you’re not interested in seeing if there’s any

information about missing girls in the surrounding areas,
I’ll just burn this paper.”

Jiang Si turned her head abruptly, staring at the neatly

folded paper, unable to swallow her pride for a moment.

Yu Jin smiled and pushed the paper into her hand:

“Alright, I’m begging you to look at it. Go ahead.”
Amidst his gentle, doting laughter, Jiang Si suddenly felt
her face grow hot. She didn’t dare to look into his eyes
and hastily opened the paper.

The paper was densely filled with information, including

the names of several villages and towns that Jiang Si had
heard from the young novice.

She couldn’t help but look at the young man before her.

Yu Jin didn’t keep her in suspense, smiling as he said: “I

arrived a step ahead of you. While donating money for oil,
I borrowed the register of donors and then sent people to
investigate the names that appeared frequently. However,
from the results, there doesn’t seem to be the information
Miss Jiang is looking for within a thirty-li radius.”

The register recorded how much oil money someone

donated, of course not just a name, but also where the
donor was from, such as “Li’s daughter from Dayang
Town” and so on.

Holding the paper in silence for a moment, Jiang Si finally

spoke: “Thank you.”

The young man revealed a clear and bright smile: “No

need for thanks. I said, this is our business.”
“I’ll study the information on the paper again first.” Jiang Si
hurriedly left with the paper in hand.

Yu Jin stood alone for a while, the smile in his eyes

deepening.

The people of Qingniu Town were still gathered in groups

outside, discussing the accident that occurred in Lingwu
Temple. At this time, a large group of people from Dayang
Town was heading towards Lingwu Temple.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 99: Searching for a Person
The town of Qingniu was accustomed to strangers due to
the frequent visitors coming to offer incense at Lingwu
Temple. However, the group from Dayang Town arrived
with such a menacing air that they immediately caught the
attention of the Qingniu townspeople.

“Look at those people. Where are they from? They seem

to be here to cause trouble.”

“Oh my, isn’t that the eldest son of Old Master Li from
Dayang Town? These must be the Li family from Dayang!”

Old Master Li from Dayang Town was immensely wealthy

and a scholar. He didn’t even have to kneel before the
county magistrate, which made him quite extraordinary in
the eyes of common folk.
“What are the Li family up to?”

“Who knows? Let’s follow and see.” The people of

Qingniu, including some temporary visitors, were naturally
curious and eagerly followed behind the group.

Jiang Zhan excitedly came to find Jiang Si: “Fourth Sister,

something’s happening outside. Let’s go take a look!”

“What’s going on?”

“I’m not sure yet, but a group of people from another town
has arrived. I have a feeling their intentions might be
related to Lingwu Temple!”

Jiang Si suppressed a smile: “You’re right, Second

Brother. Let’s go see.”

They blended into the crowd, following the group straight

to Lingwu Temple.

As Lingwu Temple was in town, more and more curious

onlookers joined along the way. By the time they reached
the temple gates, the procession had become quite
impressive.
The monk guarding the gate was startled: “Amitabha
Buddha, the temple is not receiving guests today. Please
return another time, benefactors.”

The leader, a handsome man in his twenties dressed in

fine clothes but with a fierce look in his eyes, raised his
voice: “We’re here to find someone. My sister came to
offer incense at Lingwu Temple and hasn’t returned. My
father is worried and sent me to bring her back.”

“Amitabha Buddha, there was an incident at the temple

today. All the pilgrims who were staying here have
checked out and left. Your sister is not in the temple—”

“My sister came to offer incense at Lingwu Temple. Now

she hasn’t returned, so shouldn’t we come to look for her
here? You never stop anyone from coming to offer
incense and donate money, but now when someone is
missing, you’re preventing us from entering. What does
this mean? Could it be that something has happened to
my sister here?”

The gate-keeping monk was momentarily stunned by the

young man’s questions.

Taking advantage of this, the leader quickly bypassed the

monk and rushed in, calling out: “Quickly, follow me!”
In the blink of an eye, the gate-keeping monk was pushed
aside, and a group of people swarmed in.

In the end, only the onlookers were left looking at each

other in bewilderment.

After a while, someone said, “I say, aren’t these people

from Dayang Town here to cause trouble in our Qingniu
Town? It’s too cowardly of us to just stand by and watch!”

“Right, we can’t let them cause trouble on our turf. How

dare they offend the esteemed monks of Lingwu Temple!”

Before the gate-keeping monk could steady himself,

another group of people pushed their way in.

Looking at the now trampled threshold, the gate-keeping

monk could only fight back tears.

“Who are you, ruffians? This is sacred Buddhist ground—”

Some monks came to stop them, but before they could
finish speaking, they were pushed aside. The group’s
purpose was clear as they headed straight for the back
mountain.
Lingwu Temple was backed by green mountains, and
although the back mountain was not open to pilgrims, its
layout was simple. The people from Dayang Town took
advantage of their disregard for rules and quick
movements. Before the temple monks could react, they
had already rushed to the back mountain.

By the time the warning bell rang and the monks ran out, it
was too late. Even the onlookers had followed.

In an instant, the once quiet back mountain was filled with

a sea of people.

“It’s here!” The leader rushed towards a well near the

vegetable garden.

The ground around the well was dark red, clearly blood
stains from the monk who had died in an accident, not yet
fully cleaned.

“Start drawing water!” The leader pointed at the well

mouth, and immediately someone began turning the
handle on the well frame.

A middle-aged monk stepped forward from the crowd:

“Benefactor, how can you act so recklessly in this sacred
place? Do you not fear punishment from the Buddha?”
The people drawing water hesitated.

The leader sneered: “My sister is missing. The Buddha

and Bodhisattvas are compassionate and surely won’t
blame me for searching for my sister. She’s a devout
woman who often comes to donate to Lingwu Temple.
Now she’s gone missing here, and instead of helping,
you’re obstructing us. Could it be that you have something
to hide?”

“Amitabha Buddha, benefactor, you’ve gone too far—”

“We haven’t damaged a single blade of grass or tree here.

We just want to check if there’s anything in this well.
Please, masters, allow us this courtesy.” The leader was
eloquent, and with a wave of his hand, he said, “What are
you waiting for? Hurry up!”

In the crowd, Jiang Zhan pulled at Jiang Si, his voice low
but excited: “I told you there was a female ghost in the
well, but none of you believed me!”

A female ghost had come to chat with him, which was

terrifying!

A buzz of discussion rose from the crowd of onlookers.

“What does the Li family mean by this? Could Miss Li have
fallen into the well and drowned?”

“I think Miss Li might have been harmed. Why else would

she be in this well on the back mountain?”

Someone else had a sudden realization: “No wonder a

monk had an accident. Maybe it wasn’t an accident at all,
but he witnessed Miss Li being harmed…”

Jiang Si nodded secretly.

Very good, indeed. The eyes of curious onlookers were

always sharp.

A group of people burning with the fire of gossip could spin

a grand tale from a handkerchief dropped at someone’s
doorstep, let alone a situation like this.

A bucket of water was drawn up, and people craned their

necks to look.

There was nothing!

Another bucket of water was drawn up.

The creaking sound of the rope rubbing against the well

echoed in people’s ears, monotonous and boring.

Some people were already eyeing the Dayang Town

group with unfriendly gazes.

Lingwu Temple was the pride of Qingniu Town. If

someone had gone missing here and they came to
search, it would be understandable. But if they were here
to cause trouble, that was another matter entirely.

Seeing the situation turning unfavorable, the young leader

made a quick decision and ordered one of the men who
had come with him: “Go down and take a look.”

By this point, he was somewhat regretting his actions.

But he had to come. His sister was the apple of their

parents’ eyes, and she had been ill recently, almost
worrying their parents to death.

The man immediately took off his outer garment, revealing

a muscular upper body.
The customs in Da Zhou were quite open. Even in big
cities, encountering some uninhibited people wasn’t
unusual, so the man’s act of taking off his clothes didn’t
cause a commotion. Some women even giggled lightly.

Jiang Zhan hurriedly tried to cover Jiang Si’s eyes with his
hand.

Jiang Si calmly pushed his hand away: “Second Brother,

don’t be silly.”

Jiang Zhan couldn’t help but glance at Yu Jin, only to find

him staring at the man, seemingly unbothered by Jiang Si
watching a man undress.

Yu Jin thought to himself: Heh, after seeing A-Si randomly

waving a kitchen knife at a man’s backside, this is nothing.

The man who had removed his outer clothing tied himself
to the rope and slowly descended into the well. After an
unknown period, the rope held tightly in the hands of the
others suddenly moved.

Corpse in the Well
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 100: Corpse in the Well
The young leader immediately ordered his men to pull up
the rope.
As the rope gradually moved upward, the head of the man
who had gone down the well emerged. Then, supporting
himself on the well’s edge, he climbed out, rolled onto the
ground nearby, and sat there, gasping for air.

The man’s bare upper body was muscular, with glistening

water droplets streaming down. However, his hands were
empty, clearly indicating he had found nothing.

The middle-aged monk who had previously tried to stop

these people chanted Buddha’s name once, his tone
rather stern: “If you patrons don’t leave now and stop
disturbing the temple’s tranquility, we’ll have to hand you
over to the authorities!”

More than ten young monks had gathered at some point,

each holding clubs. By their attire, they were warrior
monks. For a prosperous temple like this, even in a small
town, the donations received were a substantial sum,
naturally warranting the employment of warrior monks to
protect the temple’s safety.

The young leader’s face darkened, and he stammered,

“Since we couldn’t find my younger sister, I’ll go look
elsewhere—”
“There’s… there’s someone—” the man who had climbed
out finally caught his breath, instantly making the already
tense atmosphere even more charged with his words.

“What do you mean there’s someone?” The young

leader’s expression changed, his earlier timidity instantly
vanishing.

The man pointed down the well, his voice relatively

steady: “There’s someone down in the well!”

Naturally, anyone the young leader brought to search for a

body in the well had some courage.

As soon as the man spoke, the middle-aged monk’s face

changed, and the crowd of onlookers suddenly erupted
into heated discussions.

The young leader’s face also fell, and he shouted, “If

there’s someone, why didn’t you bring them up?”

Heavens, had his sister drowned in the well? How would

his parents take this news?

Under the young leader’s questioning, the man smiled

bitterly: “I couldn’t move them, and I was afraid the rope
wouldn’t hold—”
People glanced at the rope wound around the man’s waist
and fell silent for a moment. The rope looked sturdy, but
who knew if it could support two people? If it broke
midway, that could be fatal.

The young leader showed some quick thinking. After a

brief consideration, he ordered another rope to be
prepared: “You hold onto this rope. Go down and secure
the… person in the well with this rope, then shake the
rope around your waist. We’ll pull you up first, then bring
up the person from the well.”

This arrangement seemed reasonable. The man quickly

went back down the well. Under everyone’s watchful eyes,
the rope moved.

“Pull them up!”

At the young leader’s command, two experienced servants

immediately began pulling the rope, while two others
holding the second rope tensed up.

Soon, the man was pulled up, sitting on the wet ground
with a pale face, looking exhausted.

The other rope began to be pulled up.

This time, everyone felt as if time had slowed to a crawl.

Jiang Zhan held his breath in tension, staring intently at

the well’s opening.

The ghost was about to emerge. He wondered if it would

be as frightening as in his dream…

Finally, under everyone’s silent gaze, a dark shadow

appeared.

“Good heavens, what’s that?” someone involuntarily

screamed.

The two servants pulling the rope faltered, and the rope
dropped a bit.

Everyone’s hearts were already in their throats, about to

see clearly what had been pulled up, but this setback felt
like a breath caught, unable to go up or down.

This suffocating feeling made people forget their fear.

Someone grumbled, “What’s there to be afraid of? There
are so many of us here, and it’s holy Buddhist ground.
Even if it turned into a ghost, it wouldn’t dare cause
trouble…”
“Right, I just saw clearly, it’s just a bunch of hair.”

Because of the large crowd, what should have been a

terrifying scene instead filled people with eager
anticipation.

“Haven’t you eaten enough?” the young leader barked.

The two servants exchanged glances and pulled together

with all their might.

Time seemed to slow down again. Finally, the dark

shadow emerged once more, followed by a body…

With a thud, the corpse that had been pulled up fell to the
ground. The sound seemed to hit people’s hearts, and for
a moment, there was dead silence.

The young leader staggered forward a few steps, closed

his eyes, and cried out, “Sister, what a terrible death
you’ve suffered—”

People looked at the young man, then cautiously at the

corpse lying on the ground, maintaining an eerie silence.
Finally, a servant who had come along couldn’t help but
say, “Young Master, this is a male corpse—”

“Waaah—huh?” The young leader nearly choked, his

crying abruptly stopping.

He opened his eyes wide to look at the corpse on the

ground. Even though the person’s messy hair obscured
their face, the body shape and clothing indicated it was a
man.

Why was it a man?

At this moment, Jiang Zhan was also asking this question.

He involuntarily took two steps forward, rubbing his eyes

hard.

Where had the female ghost gone? How had it become a

man?

Jiang Si reached out and pulled her elder brother back into
the crowd.

Now was not the time to stand out; it was safer to blend in
with the crowd.
However, this situation was indeed unexpected.

She couldn’t help but look towards Yu Jin.

The youth’s face was calm as he looked ahead, with a

kind of detached indifference.

As if sensing Jiang Si’s gaze, he turned his head to meet

her eyes, finally melting that indifference like a spring
breeze, and revealing a faint smile.

Jiang Si withdrew her gaze and looked forward again.

At this time, a commotion arose in the crowd, with

someone exclaiming, “Look, there’s a stone tied to that
person’s body!”

By now, although the sun had set, the sky was still bright.
In this open area behind the mountain, it was even
brighter, so people could see a stone tied to the male
corpse without needing any light.

The man who had gone down the well suddenly realized
why.

No wonder he couldn’t move the male corpse in the well

no matter how hard he tried. It was because of this stone’s
weight. When he was tying the rope to the corpse in the
well, he was too nervous and had no light, so he hadn’t
noticed it.

“This… this is murder!” someone in the crowd cried out in

shock.

By now, the faces of the temple monks had become

extremely grim.

If it had just been a body retrieved from the well, they

could have said it was an accidental fall, and the temple
would at most be criticized for inadequate safety
measures. But now, with a corpse tied to a stone and sunk
into the well, it could only mean one thing: this was
undoubtedly a murder!

To think that a flourishing temple like Lingwu Temple had

a pilgrim murdered, and more importantly, the body was
pulled up in front of everyone—this was an extremely
heavy blow to the temple!

At this point, the expressions of the onlookers changed.

Originally, the people from Da Yang Town looked quite

hostile, ready to fight at any moment. Now, they all turned
to look at the temple monks, their eyes filled with
wariness.

“This is a homicide case, shouldn’t we report it to the

authorities?”

“Of course, we should report it. Oh my, it’s terrifying!”

People discussed among themselves, but no one was

willing to leave at this moment.

Finally, someone suggested, “This should be a young

man, right? Let’s see if anyone recognizes him—”

The young leader decided to see this through to the end

and gave a nod to the man who had gone down the well.

The man squatted next to the corpse and gently brushed

aside the hair covering the dead man’s face.
