Paragraph 21
Tepi kho bhikkhū sāvatthiṃ gantvā satthāraṃ vanditvā ekamantaṃ nisinnā
Tepi kho bhikkhū – And those monks, Sāvatthiṃ – to Savatthi, gantvā – having gone, satthāraṃ
– the Teacher, vanditvā – having paid respect, ekamantaṃ – to one side, nisinnā – having sat,
And those monks, having gone to Savatthi, having paid respect to the Teacher, having sat to
one side,
“Kacci, bhikkhave, khamanīyaṃ,
"bhikkhave – "O monks, kacci – how is it, (sarīraṃ - the body), khamanīyaṃ – bearable,
"O monks, how is it? Is / Was your body bearable?
kacci yāpanīyaṃ
kacci – how is it, yāpanīyaṃ – sustainable,
"O monks, how is it? Is / Was your body sustainable?
na ca piṇḍakena kilamitthā”ti vutte
piṇḍakena – with alms food, na ca kilamittha – and did you not become weary?" iti – thus,
vutte – when it was said,
And did you not become weary with alms food?" when it was said thus,
“Khamanīyaṃ, bhante, yāpanīyaṃ, bhante, piṇḍakena pana neva kilamimha.
"Bhante – "Venerable Sir, khamanīyaṃ – it is bearable, yāpanīyaṃ – it is sustainable, piṇḍakena
pana – and with alms food, neva kilamimha – indeed we did not become weary.
"Venerable Sir, it is bearable, it is sustainable, and with alms food, we indeed did not become
weary.
Amhākañhi mātikamātā nāmekā upāsikā cittācāraṃ ñatvā
Hi – Indeed, Mātikamātā nāma – named Mātikamātā, ekā upāsikā – a certain female lay
disciple, amhākaṃ – our, cittācāraṃ – behavior of mind, ñatvā – having known,
Indeed, a certain female lay disciple named Mātikamātā, having known our behavior of mind,
‘Aho vata no evarūpaṃ nāma āhāraṃ paṭiyādeyyā’ti cintite
‘no – ‘for us, evarūpaṃ nāma – such a kind of, āhāraṃ – food, paṭiyādeyya – if she prepare,
aho vata – oh, that would be wonderful’ iti – thus, cintite – when it was thought,
‘Oh, that would be wonderful if she prepare such a kind of food for us’ When it was thought
thus,
yathācintitaṃ āhāraṃ paṭiyādetvā adāsī”ti tassā guṇakathaṃ kathayiṃsu.
yathācintitaṃ – as it was thought, āhāraṃ – food, paṭiyādetvā – having prepared, adāsi – she
gave," iti – thus, tassā guṇakathaṃ – speech about her qualities, kathayiṃsu – they spoke.
Having prepared food as it was thought, she offered us," thus, they engaged in a speech about
her qualities.
Aññataro bhikkhu tassā guṇakathaṃ sutvā
Aññataro – a certain, bhikkhu – monk, tassā guṇakathaṃ – speech about her qualities, sutvā –
having heard,
A certain monk having heard the speech about her qualities,
tattha gantukāmo hutvā satthu santike kammaṭṭhānaṃ gahetvā,
tattha – there, gantukāmo – wishing to go, hutvā – having become, satthu – of the Teacher,
santike – in the vicinity, kammaṭṭhānaṃ – meditation subject, gahetvā – having taken,
Having become one who is wishing to go there, having taken meditation subject in the vicinity
of the Teacher
“Bhante, taṃ gāmaṃ gamissāmī”ti satthāraṃ āpucchitvā
"Bhante – "Venerable Sir, taṃ gāmaṃ – to that village, gamissāmi – I will go," iti – thus,
satthāraṃ – the Teacher, āpucchitvā – having asked permission,
"Venerable Sir, I will go to that village," thus, having asked permission from the Teacher,
jetavanato nikkhamitvā anupubbena taṃ gāmaṃ patvā
Jetavanato – from Jetavana, nikkhamitvā – having departed, anupubbena – gradually, taṃ
gāmaṃ – to that village, patvā – having arrived,
having departed from Jetavana, gradually having arrived at that village,
vihāraṃ pavisanadivaseyeva cintesi
vihāraṃ – the monastery, pavisana-divasayeva – on the day of entering, cintesi – he thought,
he thought on the day of entering the monastery,
“Ayaṃ kira upāsikā cintitacintitaṃ jānāti,
(kiṃ – what did he think?) "Ayaṃ upāsikā – "This female lay disciple, cintita-cintitaṃ –
whatever is thought, jānāti kira – it is said that she knows,
(what did he think?) "it is said that this female lay disciple knows whatever is thought,
ahañca maggakilanto vihāraṃ paṭijaggituṃ na sakkhissāmi
ahañca – and I, magga-kilanto – weary from the journey, vihāraṃ – the monastery,
paṭijaggituṃ – to clean and arrange, na sakkhissāmi – will not be able,
And I, being weary from the journey, will not be able to arrange the monastery.
aho vata me vihārapaṭijaggakaṃ manussaṃ peseyyā”ti.
Me – to me, vihāra-paṭijaggakaṃ – a monastery caretaker, manussaṃ – a person, peseyya – if
she send, aho vata – oh, that would be wonderful," iti – thus, he thought.
oh, that would be wonderful if she send a man who is a monastery caretaker to me” thus, he
thought.
