Eric Kei got a bronze medal in high jump

16-year-old Eric Kei Cheuk Yin won a bronze medal in high jump in the aspirational 22nd Athletics
meet held last Thursday and Friday. This is the second medal he had won in his secondary school
life.

As a volleyball player, it’s not easy for him to win a medal in the Athletic’s meet
which is a competition where experts gathered since this is not his expertisement
and he had not been practicing for this sport. “It is not easy for me to try to join a
track and field’s competition, however, my dad inspired me to do that, he fostered
my confidence and gave me motivation. He also provided emotional support to me.”
“I want to thank him for being there for me in both my highs and lows, what I learnt
from him is that not only outcome matters, on the contrary, the experiences are
more important,” he added. Honestly, it’s crucial to get encouragement from family
and friends as an athlete.

Eric’s biggest motivation for this competition is personal development. He is not driven by the
aspirations to attain personal success, but the deep passion for sports. He wanted to transcend his
limitations and achieve his goals. “Winning is not of paramount importance for me. I think the most
significant thing is to enjoy the process of the tournament. Also, trying to surpass my previous
performance is what really matters. Last but not least, fostering camaraderie by engaging with
friends.” “Therefore, I think my biggest motivation for competition is not my personal success, what I
really care about are my personal development
and friendship.”

As an athlete, Eric faced different struggles, such as lack of experiences and failures. When Eric
cope with his failures, he reflects on his performance and identifies areas for enhancement.
Furthermore, he established new for his future competitions. ‘Reflections and goals help me to
pinpoint skills that need improvement’ says Eric. “Most importantly, these make sure that each
experience is marked by growth and processes towards the aspiration in my sports career.”

As this is his first match in A grade, it is a big success for Eric to get a medal in Athletics meet. “I
am satisfied with my performance today, as my
level changed from B grade to A grade this year,
winning is inspirational to me. Moreover, I
surpassed my previous performance and broke my
personal best. Therefore, I think that I’ve already
accomplished my goals.

Since the Athletic’s meet next year is his last one in secondary school life, he wanted to enjoy it
and participate in more activities in order to foster camaraderie and personal growth. ‘I want to break
my personal record in both high jump and running and even win a silver medal or gold medal. I want
to enjoy the last Athletics Meet in secondary school.
“After the competition, I want to celebrate not only the victory but also the journey. Gathering with
friends and family, sharing stories of perseverance and relish the joy of competition. No matter it is
just a simple meal or a party, laughter and camaraderie will fill the air. Every race and jump honor the
spirit of sports and the bonds forged along the way.”

Eric Kei believes that his strength should be used for God’s glory. His strength and achievements
not only inspired people and show them where he found his happiness with what god has gave him,
but also motivated and encouraged others to embrace the fun of sports and responses to the theme
of the Olympic Day — ‘Let’s move and celebrate’.
