MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Forum
1. Introduction
A good IT architecture will:
● Directly address the needs of the enterprise
● React to change at the rate dictated by the enterprise’s markets
● Be understood and supported by senior management
● Clearly define the structure of the existing system
● Provide a roadmap and migration strategy for future purchases /
developments
● Reduce the number and complexity of the interfaces between components,
improving the ease of:
○ Application portability
○ Component upgrade
○ Component exchange
○ Component development and maintenance
MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
Can a business succeed without
a documented business plan?
Can I.T. succeed without a documented architecture?
● Greater ability to respond to new demands
● Greater business value from IT operations
● Greater ability to introduce new technology
● Faster, simpler and cheaper procurement
● Faster time-to-market

MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
But where do you start?
● There are many successful IT architectures in use
● Can you benefit from that accumulation of knowledge?
● Can you examine in detail the IT architecture of another
organization?
● Do you have to reinvent the wheel?
● What reference material is available?
This is why TOGAF exists and is freely available.
MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
The Open Group Architecture Forum
● The forum in which TOGAF is evolved
● A worldwide forum for: customers, tool vendors, solution vendors,
integrators, academic & research organizations involved with
architecture
● Exchanging information, experience, and requirements
● Access to current work in progress
● Shaping the market for architecture methods, tools and services

TOGAF Content Overview
Architecture Capability Framework
Architecture Development Method (ADM)
ADM Guidelines and Techniques
Architecture Content Framework
The Enterprise Continuum
TOGAF Reference Models
MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
ADM Guidelines and
Techniques
ADM Guidelines and Techniques provides a
number of guidelines and techniques to support the
application of the ADM.
The guidelines address adapting the ADM to deal
with a number of usage scenarios, including
different process styles (e.g., the use of iteration)
and also specific specialty architectures (such as
security).
The techniques support specific tasks within the
ADM (such as defining principles, business
scenarios, business goals, gap analysis, migration
planning, risk management, etc)

MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
Architecture Content
Framework
The Architecture Content Framework
provides a detailed model of architectural
work products, including deliverables,
artifacts within deliverables, and the
Architecture Building Blocks (ABBs) that
deliverables represent.
MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
Enterprise Continuum
The Enterprise Continuum provides a model for
structuring a virtual repository and provides
methods for classifying architecture and solution
artifacts, showing how the different types of
artifacts evolve, and how they can be leveraged
and re-used.
This is based on architectures and solutions
(models, patterns, architecture descriptions, etc.)
that exist within the enterprise and in the industry
at large, and which the enterprise has collected
for use in the development of its architectures.

MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
TOGAF Reference Models
Technical Reference Model (TRM) Integrated Information Infrastructure Model (III-RM)
TOGAF provides two reference models for possible inclusion in an enterprise's own Enterprise Continuum, namely the
TOGAF Technical Reference Model (TRM) and the Integrated Information Infrastructure Model (III-RM).
MODULE 6: The Open Group Architecture Framework
1. Introduction
Architecture Capability Framework
The Architecture Capability Framework is a set of resources,
guidelines, templates, background information, etc. provided to
help the architect establish an architecture practice within an
organization
