1.0 GENERAL
Bullets are high pressure horizontal storage vessel with ellipsoidal or torispherical heads.
The shape of these vessels are like bullets and these vessels are generally shop fabricated.
Bullets are normally used for storage of chemicals such as chlorine, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
etc.

2.0 STATUTORY RULES

The bullets come under SMPV (Static and Mobile Pressure Vessel) Rules and the installations have
to be approved by CCE (Chief Controller of Explosives).
However, recommendations of OISD std.-118 (Oil Industry Safety Directorate) should be
considered as a good engineering practice.

3.0 LOCATION
3.1 When bullets are located near the process unit, a protection berm should be considered. The
length and height of the protection berm shall be decided to provide adequate safety against
explosion. The length of berm shall be atleast 3m on both side of the centre line of the bullet and the
height of berm shall be at least equal to the height of the bullet.
3.2 The bullets shall be arranged in a single row and shall not be stacked one above the other.
3.3 Bullets coming under statutory regulations shall be enclosed in a protected area by fencing with
security gates. The distance from the edge of the bullets to fencing shall be minimum 30 metre.
3.4 The paved area around the bullet shall be provided with adequate drainage facility during normal
operation.
The paved area shall have curbing with minimum 300mm height. The area shall be sloped towards a
sump inside the curb and shall have connection with a valve to effluent treatment plant for treating
the contamination due to any leakage.
3.5 A typical bullet plot plan is shown in Fig.BP2.
3.6 The longitudinal axes of bullets should not point towards other vital process equipment and control
room. The bullets shall be laid perpendicular to piperack and the dished end shall be minimum 4m
from the piperack.

4.0 TANK DETAILS

4.1 A Typical bullet tank is illustrated in Fig.BP1
4.2 Usually, in a bullet tank, the small instrument connections are located on a manhole to avoid
scattered shell openings, and subsequent radiography.
4.3 All safety connections are clubbed in one big nozzle, normally having the size of a manhole.
4.4 The bullet tank is usually supported on two saddles resting on concrete foundation blocks.
4.5 If roof / shed is provided on the top nozzles of the bullets, there will be provision of an opening on
roof directly above the manhole connections.
4.6 One common platform connecting all the main nozzles on the bullet tanks shall be planned with
approach from both the ends by normal staircase and clear escape route to security gate.
4.7 A typical arrangement when more than one bullet is to be arranged is illustrated in Fig. BP4.

5.0 PIPING ARRANGEMENTS

5.1 A typical piping arrangement over the bullet tank is illustrated in Fig.BP3. Sufficient access to
operating valves and instruments are to be provided.
5.2 A typical protection berm, piperack and pumps are shown in Fig.BP5 as commonly planned in a
bullet tank area.
5.3 A typical fire water spray protection system for bullets is illustrated in Fig.BP6.
5.4 A clear aisle of min 900mm shall be maintained between the bullets.
5.5 A typical chlorine storage area and chlorine storage shed is illustrated in Fig.BP7 and Fig.BP8.
