2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Every program of instruction, course or training activity begins with a goal. This goal can
be broken down into specific goals, or learning objectives, which are concise statements
about what we will be able to do when the instruction is completed. By getting an
opportunity to complete my internship in this organization, it helped me learn a lot of
new things. Before joining the company, I set some clear goals for myself. Following
were my learning objectives:
1. Gain Insight into Working Environment:
Internship at Leifii was my first real working experience, hence it was one of my
goals to get familiar with the working environment and corporate culture in
companies.
2. To Apply Business Concepts and Theories to Real World Decision-Making:
Being a Business Management student, I had learned a lot of concepts and various
theories as to how business functions, but never really had a first-hand experience.
Before beginning with this internship, I had this clear objective in mind that I
want to understand how a business runs and obtains profits.
3. Develop and Improve Finance and Accounting Skills:
I am a Finance Major; I wanted to learn and use basic accounting skills in my
day-to-day life.
4. Learn Financial Analysis:
Another one of my major motives for this internship was to learn how to read and
understand and also prepare financial statements.
5. Perfecting Interpersonal Skills:
I wanted to work on myself, not just through the professional aspect, but also an
interpersonal aspect. I wanted to develop my communication skills, teamworking
skills. I also wished to work on becoming more punctual and disciplined.
6. Determine if Financial Operations is the appropriate Career Goal for me:
I also wanted to know if I enjoy working in this field, to decide whether I can
make a career out of this field or not.
3. DETAILS OF INTERNSHIP
DESIGNATION
• I worked at Leifii for 2 months as a Finance Intern.
• The duration of the internship was from 2nd of May to 2nd of July, 2024.
• I worked in the Finance department.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Bookkeeping –
This is the most basic function of the finance department. It involves the day-to-
day recording, analysis and interpretation of a company’s financial transactions.
This will include the tracking of all expenses (purchases, payments etc.) and sales
of finished products. In some startup companies, this role is often carried out by a
bookkeeper who might be replaced by more specialized payables and receivables
clerks as the company grows or expands its operations.
b. Management of Company’s Cash Flow-
It is the duty of the finance department to manage all cash flows into and out of a
company and ensure that there are enough funds available to meet the day-to-day
running of the company. This area also encompasses the credit and collections
policies for the company’s customers, to ensure that vendors and creditors are
paid correctly and on time; and that the company is also paid correctly and as
when due.
c. Budgets and forecasting-
In this function, the finance department works with managers to prepare the
company’s budgets and forecasts and also give feedback with regards to the
financial standing of the company. This information can be used to fulfil the cash
needs of each department, plan company staffing levels, plan asset purchase and
expansions at minimum cost before they become necessary. The finance
department can also use past records from respective departments to make better
budget and forecast over long-term and short-term time horizons.
d. Management of Taxes-
Running a company involves paying tax, and it is the duty of the finance
department to handle tax issues. This includes creating good corporate
relationships with government by remitting PAYE (Pay As You Earn) to the
relevant authority, and ensuring that implementation of tax matters is done within
the framed policies.
e. Advising and sourcing longer-term financing-
It is the duty of the finance department to advise companies on the best financing
mix that could yield the company the best profit and also help them source longer-
term financing at the lowest cost such that there is a profit level of liquidity.
f. Management of Company’s Investments-
Apart from analyzing and selecting new investments, it is also the duty of the
finance department to manage company’s existing assets. The finance department
should be concerned with current assets apart from fixed assets. The company’s
working capital needs to be managed efficiently in such a way as to maximize
profitability relative to the amount of funds tied up since it has more implication
on the firm liquidity than its fixed asset.
g. Financial Reporting and analysis-
Financial reporting and analysis is the function that takes raw accounting entries
and transforms them into meaningful, usable and comparable financial statements.
The finance department contributes to organizational growth by measuring and
reporting on regular bases, key numbers that are vital to the success of the
company. This will likely include a summary of all funding sources, expenditures
and reserves available for future use (excluding those already committed and
budgeted for current period) some non-financial information. And are usually
communicated to managers in a logical and understandable format.
WORK I DID IN THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT –
a. Assisted the Finance team in day-to-day routine accounting tasks.
b. Followed up all the pending tasks related to finance.
c. Studied variances, prepared budgets and developed forecasts.
d. Prepared monthly statements by collecting data, analyzed and investigated
variances, summarized data, information and trends.
e. Prepared quarterly reports.
f. Balance Sheet analysis including account reconciliations.
g. Data Entry – Accounts Payable, Journal Filling, Bank Reconciliation, Monthly
Reporting.

SHORTCOMINGS
• Lack of interning experience-
I was one of the very few interns the firm has ever had, and the last intern they had was
months ago. There was a lack of experience when it came to handling an intern, and it
was quite nagging for the initial few days.
• Monotonous Job-
The work assigned was very monotonous in nature. For days, the job structure included
work like data entries, scanning documents, filing, etc. The job profile was not creative in
nature, leaving you bored at times.
• Motivation factor-
The success rate of the performance delivered was not measurable. The quality of my
performance was judged by negligible factors like how accurate and quick my data
entries were. So, the efforts put in during the internship could sometimes go undervalue,
and hence left me demotivated at times.
• Lack of confidence-
Despite my qualifications, there was a certain level of skepticism around my ability to get
the work done. Since the stakes were very high, and a mistake here and there could lead
to huge losses, I was never trusted completely to carry out work of higher denominations.
• Day constraints-
Since it was only a two-month internship, I was not able to learn as much as I would have
liked to. I was only able to be proficient with the basics, and never really got a hang of
advanced work.
PROBLEMS FACED
a. Not being familiar with the work culture.
b. The job profile being completely new, to understand what was exactly expected
of me during this tenure of internship was strenuous.
c. It was a multi-tasking job where in, I was expected to do all the basic work of the
people from the department, and yet do enough complex work to fulfil my motive
of learning enough. The complex nature of job difficult to adapt with.
d. To work with the same pace as that of the permanent employees was not easy.
e. Not having an experience to work in a proper corporate culture made it tough to
keep up with all the tasks.
f. Maintaining cordial relationships with all the fellow employees was another
important and challenging task.
g. It was difficult to jell up with all the employees of the firm as all of them were
from different background.
h. It was quite difficult to understand the nature of the job in the beginning.
i. No professional knowledge before joining this company, hence it resulted in
failure sometimes.
j. Totally new for the corporate life and was unknown about the culture of the
organization, also the age gap of me and my fellow colleagues did not help.
k. The practical aspects of the internship were difficult to understand as it was
something different from what we learned in college.
l. Mentors were not responsive sometimes which led to frustration and hence
failure in work.
m. Not achieving the target led to frustration and demotivation.
4. OTHER DEPARTMENTS
For every organization to achieve its objective, the cohesion, harmony and coordination
between every department is very important. It is vital from the stage of planning to the
stage of execution. Every department contributes to the success and revenue of the
organization. Thus, working of every individual department affects the working of the
organization at large. And hence, managers keep a keen eye on the working of the
organization.

5. STUDENT’S LEARNING
My internship at Leifii was amazing. It taught me a lot more than I had imagined. It was
my first ever corporate experience and I worked there for two months. As a Finance
intern, my duties were diverse and dynamic. I have taken million little and big
experiences in these two months. This internship provided me with rewarding
experiences that has helped build me. As it was a startup firm, I got to learn insights of all
departments including marketing, sales, management, etc.
Before my internship, I was aware of many financial and operations concepts, but never
got the opportunity to apply them practically. The past months of my internship have
been very instructive for me. The company offered me opportunities to learn and develop
myself in many areas. A lot of the tasks and activities that I have worked on during my
internship are familiar with what I’m studying at the moment. This gave me the chance to
find out which areas I want work in after my education. Before my internship started my
ideas did not match the experiences that I have gained during my internship.
There is a big difference in the school projects and the tasks and activities done during
the actual work. In school we learn how to describe the work in projects, where as in
work you learn how to implement them in reality. I have learned to work in a business
organization and apply my knowledge into practice.
One main thing that I have learned through this internship is time management skills as
well as self-motivation. Once I realized what I had to do I organized my day and work so
that I was not wasting my hours. I learned that I needed to be organized and have
questions ready for when it was the correct time to get feedback.
A list of things that I learned during my internship:
• This internship has taught me how to communicate with the people in a gentle and
professional manner.
• To survive in the corporate sector, we have to act patiently. Because there will be
lot of stress and deadlines about the work, so we should act patiently to achieve
our targets.
• How to behave in the office: This being my first position in an office atmosphere,
I didn’t know exactly what to expect. Simply working in the office and getting
used to everything here has definitely prepared me for whatever my next position
may be. Just observing the everyday events has taught me more about teamwork,
and how people can come together to get things done.
• How to build my resume: Like I said, this internship has improved my skills to
another level, both off paper and on paper. I didn’t realize it all of this time, but
this position served not only as a positive learning experience, but a resume
builder as well. I came into this with a resume that was basically naked, now I am
leaving and I have lots of updating to do. My resume doesn’t need a makeover, it
needs to be restarted from scratch, and that’s a good thing! I underestimated how
much work I did that actually translates to my resume.
• This internship was definitely beneficial for me and I’m grateful and thankful that
I got to experience and learn many things.
LEARNINGS
Along with adding value to myself, I also learnt a sea of different things. It opened doors
for learning and absorbing more and more things in the field. An internship is an
opportunity to test out all the skills that you developed in your college and see how they
work in the real world.
Some of my key learnings are:
1. Basic principles of Accounting: Before my internship, I knew of accounting
principles and concepts only in theory. After I started working on my internship, I
got to put those in practical use.
2. Finance of a Company: Through this Internship, I understood that how a
company procures, manages and reinvests its finance. I also came to the
realization that if a company is able to manage its finances efficiently, it is more
likely to be profitable in the future.
3. Professional Communication: During the time of my internship, a key skill
that is note-worthy is my acquired skill in professional communication. I have
learnt that how so ever the culture of the company is casual, friendly, and
approachable, there still exists a thin line of demarcation where there arises a
difference between communication with a colleague and your friends back at
college.
4. Importance of networking: Our professors, before the internship began told
us to build a network and I realized its importance after I came back after
interning. I realized that a good network of contacts can pull you out through your
rough phase, personally and professionally.
5. Understanding the importance of constructive criticism: Before joining here
as an intern, I won’t lie and be very straightforward in saying that I was quite a bit
rigid in my opinions. But after I worked here for several months, I understood that
whenever I would consider other people’s opinions about things, they turned out
well. There exists a phenomenon called constructive criticism which helps us to
accomplish better results.
6. Accountability: As college students we are allowed to make a few impulsive
decisions, the repercussions of which are not very severe. But, when we enter the
corporate space, we have to be accountable for the decisions we make and stand
by it.
7. Decision Making: It’s such an area where quick and correct decisions are to be
made after evaluating all the available options. Decision making is not skill that
can acquired overnight. It requires practice and situations.
8. Patience: I was not at all patient before joining the office. I learnt to be patient
and learn new things that would help me to grow as an individual in the life and
get me to the path of success.
9. Independence: Independence always fuels the passion to work more. Being able
to work independently with little guidance is very important in the corporate
situation.
10. Leadership: To volunteer for extra work assigned and to introduce new concepts
were the areas where I got to showcase my leadership skills.
6. SUGGESTIONS
• Proper training should be given to interns as I was the only intern during my time.
• Proper co-ordination is very necessary between the interns and the heads of all the
departments. Regular checking of work assigned to employees as well as interns
should be checked accordingly.
• The social media pages should be handled carefully. Daily uploads should be
done on social accounts from companies account in order to attract and maintain
the existing customers and to get new customers.
• Need to find more ways to have effective communication so that no
misunderstanding is created. Good coordination is to be maintained by all the
members of the company be it the head, manager or the subordinates.
• Communication should be performed on daily basis with each and every member
of the company so that if there are any queries or if someone is unaware of
important events they are resolved.
• The company should build a good infrastructure including the electronic devices.
7. CONCLUSION
• This internship has taught practical knowledge in corporate field and had brought
a sort of progress, growth in my personal life.
• The environment which I have experienced, the people I met through my
internship, the relation which I built with them, all of these are precious to me.
• I got to work in all the departments getting the insights of all different
departments that are necessary for a business to run smoothly.
• As it is a start-up company the number of employees are less but the experience
that I got there was indeed worth the time and energy that I invested in the work.
• It was my first step towards the corporate world and I learnt many new terms and
jargons related to the corporate business.
• Few of my myths related to the job and internships got cleared.
• I was allowed to give ideas and speak about the facts that were known to me. The
employees had freedom to share their views regarding the business and even the
employees were motivated.
• I learnt that practical knowledge and theory knowledge are quite different.
Though my theory knowledge helped me a lot to understand the profile and the
work easily, it is quite different from the practical aspect.
• I learnt time management as my internship was in shifts, I learnt to manage the
schedule and work efficiently within the time period assigned to me.
