How to create a table using Microsoft Word 2016
Tables are often used to organise and present information, and can be used to create interesting
page layouts. Cell
A table is made up of rows and columns of cells that you
can fill with text and graphics.

Click on Start, Microsoft Office 2016, Word 2016
If you need a heading for the table do this first, as this is often the easiest way
Next click on the Insert tab and choose Table
Select the number of rows and columns you require by dragging your mouse over the table
grid. An empty table will appear on your screen ready for you to enter information.
To change the size of columns
First click in the column
On the ruler line at the top you will see a grey square (as shown)
With the double arrow drag with the mouse button, to make the column wider or narrower
An alternative way to change the column width is by moving your mouse over the line to
the right of the column. With the double arrow drag the line with the left-hand mouse button
To merge cells
In the table shown overleaf the top row has been merged to create a heading
Highlight the cells you want to merge
Click on the Layout tab and choose Merge Cells

To insert a row or column
Select the area where you want to insert a row or column
Click on the Layout tab
Rows – Click on either Insert Above or Insert Below
Columns – Click on either Insert Left or Insert Right

To split cells
In the table shown below the English column has been split into 2 parts
Select the cell you want to split
Click on the Layout tab and choose Split Cells

To add shading or colour
Select the area that you want to shade
Click on the Design tab and choose Shading
Choose from the Theme Colors or Standard Colors
