Module 7 Edited

This module focuses on preparing and interpreting technical drawings relevant to animation, covering basic symbols and elements such as schematic diagrams, flowcharts, and layout plans. Students are expected to identify these symbols and select appropriate technical drawings for their projects. Understanding these concepts is essential for effective communication and organization in the animation production process.

Quarter 1 – Module 7:
Prepare and Interpret
Technical Drawing
(Week 7)
1

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
understand Animation. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course.

The module will cover:

● Lesson 1 – Basic Symbols

● Lesson 2 – Basic Elements o Schematic diagram o
Charts o Block diagrams o Layout plans o Loop
diagram

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify basic symbols used in technical drawing; and

2. select technical drawing in accordance with the job requirement.

What’s New

Drawing is considered to be a universal language. It provides the foundation,

structure, and context of any great work of art using symbols. Symbols provide a
common language for people all over the world. They are all around and people see
them every day.

1
A symbol is something that represents something else by association, resemblance,
or convention. However, symbols are meaningful only if they are drawn according to
relevant standards or convention. A heart, for example, can be a symbol for love, and
a candle can be a symbol for light.

Technical drawing used in animation helps communicate ideas. Symbols also help
to provide structure and routine such as diagrams and flowchart. Animated film
production used a flow chart to show the details of the relationships among hundreds
of people involved in a film production. In some other cases, a flowchart is also used
in the pre-production in animation to show the steps of the whole process of
storyboarding.

This module covers the basic symbols and elements of technical drawing, the
different kinds of technical drawings and symbols used in flowcharting, and how to
interpret and create flowchart.

Animation requires good graphic design and an understanding of pacing,

sequencing, structure, and rhythm. It is for this reason that symbols and elements
in technical drawing are essential to the animation industry.

What is It

TECHNICAL TERMS

• drawing - act or the art of representing any object

by means of lines and shades
• diagram - a simplified drawing showing the
appearance, structure, or work of
something
• flowchart - a diagram that uses graphic symbols to
depict the nature and flow of the steps
in a process
• storyboarding - a rough, pictorial outline of the different
scenes, camera angles, or perspectives
in a movie or interactive sequence
• process - a series of actions, changes, or
functions bringing about a result
• symbols - a sign, shape, or object that is used to
represent something else

2
Technical drawing is also known as drafting. A drawing or a plan that is used to
communicate directions and specifics to a group of people.

Making short animations serves as a tool and a medium for explaining an idea and
creating engaging explanations. By understanding the when, why, and how of
making a short animation, different symbols and diagrams are used. Symbols used
in technical drawings are essential in animation because they help convey an idea
and to communicate each and every piece of information necessary in creating a
design and in the whole process of the production.

Basic Symbols Used in Technical Drawing

1. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) symbols are used to

define the relationships between part features and measurement
references.

Examples:

Straightness flatness

Circulatory cylindricity

profile of a line profile of a surface

Position concentricity

Symmetry Parallelism

perpendicularity Angularity

circular runout or total runout

2. Architectural symbols are used to indicate commonly used materials and

features that have been developed over the years.

Examples:

3
exterior door interior door shower tub

range washer/dyer toilet kitchen sink

fluorescent light
urinal lighting outlet conduit
fixture

3. Piping symbols are used to represent devices and equipment installed in

the piping system.

Examples:
tree, front
90 elbow, left
side

cross, right side

concentric
reducer

4. Electronic Symbols are used to represent various electrical and electronic

devices in a schematic diagram of an electrical or electronic circuit.
Examples:

amplifier multicell battery capacitor, circuit breaker

polarized

transformer,
voltage regulator microphone resistor, general
general

4
twin triode using

elongated ground chassis ground
connectors
envelope

What’s New

Symbols provide a visual representation of a diagram. They are used in

communicating the structure of the work while elements are the structure of the
work. Elements are instructions and decisions that carry a wide form of messages.
In creating a short animation movie, an animator's mapping his or her project is a
great way to showcase how he or she thinks, organizes thoughts, and plans. The
elements of technical drawing will help each animator to define the scope of the
project and the specifics of the production.

What is It

TECHNICAL TERMS
● circuit - a path between two or more points along which an
electrical current can be carried

● elements - components or parts that can be isolated and defined in any visual
design or work of art

● layout - an arrangement or plan, especially the schematic

arrangement of parts or areas

● loop - a structure, series, or process at the end of which is connected to the

beginning

● structure - the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of

something complex

5
Basic Elements of Technical Drawing

1. Schematic diagram is a drawing that shows all of the significant components

of a circuit, flow, process, or device.
Example:

2. Charts are sheets of information in the form of a table, graph, or diagram.

Example:

3. Block diagram is a chart or diagram that uses labeled blocks connected by

straight lines to represent the relationship of parts or phases, as the steps in
a data-processing application. Example:

6
4. Layout plan is a construction plan prepared by the contractor as part of their
mobilization activities before work on site commences. Example:

5. Loop diagram represents a detailed drawing showing a connection from one

point to the control system. Example:
