The Impact of Sleep on Academic Performance in College Students

In college, students often struggle to balance homework, activities, and social life, which can
lead to not getting enough sleep. Many wonder if sleep affects how well they do in school, such
as in assignments or exams. This study aims to find out if sleep has an impact on academic
performance in college students.
The idea behind this study is that students who sleep 7 hours or more a night will do better on
their schoolwork and get higher grades compared to students who sleep 6 hours or less. The
independent variable (IV) is the amount of sleep, with two groups: one group that sleeps 7 or
more hours, and another that sleeps 6 hours or less. The dependent variable (DV) is academic
performance, measured by task completion and grades.
This study will use a quantitative method, focusing on collecting numbers, and a deductive
approach, meaning it will test the hypothesis based on what we already know about sleep and
performance. An experimental design will be used, where students will be randomly assigned to
one of two groups: one group will aim for 7 or more hours of sleep, and the other group will
sleep 6 or fewer hours for two weeks. The study will involve 150 college students aged 18-22,
recruited through flyers and emails. Random assignment ensures the groups are similar at the
start of the study.
Data will be collected in two ways: first, students will keep sleep diaries to track how many
hours they sleep each night. Second, students will complete a weekly academic task, which
includes reading comprehension questions, problem-solving exercises, and a short essay. The
number of correct answers and the quality of the essay will be used to measure academic
performance.
Basic statistics will be used to summarize the sleep hours and academic scores. A test will
compare the performance of the two groups to see if the group that sleeps 7 or more hours does
better than the group that sleeps 6 or fewer hours. The study will also look at how sleep affects
task performance.
It’s expected that students who sleep 7 or more hours will perform better on their academic tasks,
like answering more questions correctly and completing more tasks. If the results show this, it
will suggest that sleep is important for doing well in school. This study could help students
understand the importance of sleep for academic success and offer helpful information for
university staff to support students' health and performance.
