Questions 11 – 15

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Selina, the cave explorer

My name's Selina, I'm 16 and I belong to a club that explores caves. Although I've been involved in a
range of sports, at first the idea of going caving, which is the name for what I do, didn't appeal to me. My
friends had to persuade me to try it. They insisted I'd have a great time. I could have an adventure but still
be safe. Later I realised that it's a fascinating way to discover the mysterious world beneath our feet and
it's given me a detailed knowledge of science and geography.

My first experience underground was going on a guided tour of a cave. Initially, I was nervous, but not for
long because the guide encouraged me every step of the way. It was a huge cave and we stayed
underground for slightly longer than I expected, but the level of challenge was right for beginners.
Sometimes you have to lie down on your stomach and move through narrow spaces, but fortunately it
wasn't necessary to do that this time.

Soon after, I joined my local caving club. The members were older than me but friendly and positive.
Despite being a beginner, I thought I'd learn fast and get a qualification. In fact, the opposite was true.
There are no official qualifications and you just have to slowly gain experience of different types of cave. I
remember in one there were wet rocks and we had to climb over them. It was difficult not to slip. But
managing to avoid trouble made me believe I could handle almost anything.

Caving can be expensive because you require suitable kit. At some clubs you can buy things you need at
a discount, though not at mine. But I was pleased the club suggested high-quality helmets, jackets and
torches that would last me a long time. Preparation is important. I try not to take too much underground,
but I always pack something to eat in case I get hungry.

In most caves, it's easy to get lost if you don't pay attention, so club members go in groups rather than
explore by themselves. One day I'm going to visit other countries and study the caves there.

There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Humpback Whale song

The males of a species of whale called a humpback are known for the beautiful sounds they make. These
are not just noises, but are carefully-made songs, which repeat and develop for up to 30 minutes.
Scientists are not sure what the purpose of the whales' songs is. 16 Others think the songs are to
warn males from other groups in the area to keep away. The humpback whales do, however, appear to get
tired of singing the same song. 17 But actually it's possible to hear parts of the previous years'
songs within them.

One study found a song that was not just sung by whales in one family group or 'pod' but also by
neighbouring pods, presumably when they heard other whale songs close by. In one example, researchers
followed a song that started in a pod living on Australia's eastern coast. 18 This was an important
discovery because it shows that whales, like humans, have a culture that they can share over great
distances.

The researchers had one question, though, concerning how the humpbacks learn new songs. 19
The recordings suggested whales divide songs into shorter, manageable parts to learn them. One
explanation is that, just like humans, whales find shorter bits of information easier to remember.

The research also discovered that whales create their songs in one of two ways. They might mix a number
of short pieces of new tunes with various parts they already know. 20 Something the scientists
find amazing is how the whales choose where to add this new tune. With great skill, they choose the point
where the tunes sound similar, so the parts fit perfectly.

8
A It then moved from group to group to French Polynesia - 4,000 miles away.

B But the style of song varies between species.

C Or they put part of a new song into the middle of an older one.

D They create songs every year, which, at first, might seem to be brand new.

E The whale swam many thousands of kilometres during its life.

F Some experts have suggested they are used to attract a partner.

G Singing a song helps whales form stronger relationships.

H To answer this, they listened to 9,000 whale songs.
