Assignment-1
Semiconductor Physics & Optics
Date: 27/02/2025
1. What is the basis for classifying a material as a conductor, semiconductor, or a dielectric?
What is the conductivity of perfect dielectric?
2. Differentiate semiconductors, conductors and insulators on the basis of band gap.
3. Define (i) hole in a semiconductor (ii) Recombination (iii) Doping
4. Why does a pure semiconductor behave like an insulator at absolute zero temperature?
5. Why silicon is preferred over Ge as a semiconductor material?
6. Discuss the effect of temperature in pure semiconductor with the help of energy band diagram.
7. Differentiate between intrinsic semiconductors and Extrinsic semiconductors.
8. What are intrinsic semiconductors? Explain the formation of a hole in an intrinsic semiconductor. Draw
the energy level diagram.
9. What is extrinsic semiconductor? Distinguish between n-type and p-type semiconductors. Draw
relevant energy level diagrams
10. What is n-type semiconductor? How is an n-type semiconductor formed? Name the majority charge
carriers in it. Draw the energy band diagram of an n-type semiconductor.
11. What is p-type semiconductor? How is an p-type semiconductor formed? Name the majority charge
carriers in it. Draw the energy band diagram of an p-type semiconductor.
12. Pure Silicon semiconductor at 500K has equal electrons and holes (1.5 × 1016 m-3). Doping by
Indium increases nh to 4.5 × 1022 m-3. Calculate the type and electron concentration of doped
semiconductor.
13. In an intrinsic semiconductor, the number of conduction electrons is 7 × 1019 m3. Find the total
number of current carriers in the same semiconductor of size 1 cm × 1 cm × 1 mm.
14. The energy gap of silicon is 1.14 eV. What is the maximum wavelength at which silicon will
begin absorbing energy?
15. The intrinsic carrier density is 1.5 × 1016 m–3. If the mobility of electron and hole are 0.13 and
0.05 m2 V–1 s–1, calculate the conductivity
16. The Intrinsic carrier density at room temperature in Ge is 2.37 × 1019 m3 if the electron and
hole mobility are 0.38 and 0.18 m2 V–1 s–1 respectively, calculate the resistivity.
17. The Hall Coefficient of Certain silicon specimen was found to be – 7.35 ×10-5 m3 C-1 from
100 to 400K. If conductivity was found to be 200 Ω-1 m-1 Calculate the density and mobility
