Language?

Language is a system of communication that consists of structured sounds, words, and symbols
used by humans to express thoughts, emotions, and ideas. It is a fundamental tool for interaction,
social connection, and knowledge transmission.

Functions of Language

1. Communicative Function – we use language to share information or ideas by


expressing/showing your emotions and thoughts -to build relationship
2. Expressive Function: Language helps us express our thoughts and feelings.
3. Phatic Function: Language is used for social interaction, like
greetings and small talk.
4. Directive Function: We use language to give instructions,
commands, or requests.
5. Referential Function: Language conveys factual information or
references to things. Providing details and facts
6. Metalinguistic Function: We use language to talk about language
itself (e.g., grammar rules)." Language to language

 Characteristics of Language: -
1. Arbitrary: The relationship between words and their meanings is
arbitrary (e.g., the word 'dog' has no inherent connection to the
animal).
2. Dynamic: Language is constantly evolving and changing.
3. Cultural: Language reflects the culture in which it is used.
4. Systematic: Language follows specific rules and structures (grammar,
syntax).
5. Creative: Language allows us to create an infinite number of sentences
using a finite set of rules."
 COMPONENTS OF LANGUAGE

3. Syntax: The arrangement of words and phrases to create sentences. –
