apart

we should be in a very clear position to push the frontline of
reading culture forward.

PRESS CONFERENCE
EDUCATION
BY MUSA “MY LAST”
Welcome to press conference education
This is where we bring indept interview with
educationists across the nation.
Our topic in this issue is, for us to overrun
Breakdown of reading culture government have
to build up.
Education is not working largely as it should be
because of poor academic quality which stem from
breakdown of reading culture majorly. Poor reading
culture is a default instrument, there should be
indivisibility unity in the fight against it. Quality
education is what humanity depend, is essential to
whom we are as human.
We are doing a disservice for allowing it to
continue. It seems we don’t understand the future
consequences of this addictive. We need to look at the
effect on our eyes and find the right environment for
reading culture in our schools.
Crossing the finishing line is for all the students.
Academic is an event that keeps you (student) reading
- very preparation in reward. – Breakdown of reading
culture torpedo attack on our education.
Joining me to discuss the issue is Mrs. Agnes
zamehie Gwatana, the principal of Community
Secondary School Agodo Bassa L.G.A. Kogi State.
Born on 16th November, 1970 in Agodo, Bassa
L.G.A kogi State. She attended L.G.E.A Primary School
Agodo, between 1995 and 1998. She then went to
Government Girls Secondary School Aliade, Gwer L.G.A
Benue State. She letter attended C.O.E Ankpa for her
N.C.E programme between 1991 and 1994. She then
went to Ekiti State University Ado Ekiti where she read
Educational Management between 2002 and 2005.
She started teaching in 1995 at L.G.E.A Primary
School Shemeje in Bassa L.G.A and rose to her present
position.
The headline news in our education today is
poor attitude to studies, how do we pick up for
this?
We can’t escape breakdown of reading culture
(poor attitude to studies). We are tired of been kept in
the dark of government position on it.
So far it seems we have put our heads in the sand,
we cannot continue like this, we have to find solution to
it because is not a good look for our education.
The world of academia and academic life should be
in search of safety – this is reversing into the future.
We have to encourage students (motivate) those
who perform well (in cash and kind).
Parent should be encouraged in the future of their
children - They should also note that without education
no development can take place in any community.
Government should employ more teachers and pay
them at the right time.
What do you conclude from the evidence that
academic quality is poor?
Really academic quality is poor because
government is not taking care of education as it
suppose to be. Go to educational offices many things
are lacking welfare of teachers have been ignored,
most especially at primary school level. Teachers at
this level are working hard because they care for the
future of these children.
Another serious issues is that before if a child fails,
he or she is made to repeat, but today the reverse is
the case because if the prevailing condition. If you ask
a child to repeat, you will be losing student because
they will go to other schools and will be admitted.
Government attention is seriously needed here.
Due to scarcity of teachers, one teacher’s take
care of many subject. What do you expect in such
situation?
In conclusion, today our education has fallen on
hard time. The story is very widely told, we got our
feet on unstable ground. Mobile phone is a
psychological catchment, it has change everything in
our education. Children value their phone more than
reading their books. Reminder, the massages on
phones are abbreviation, not with correct spelling, so
they are not getting things right.
How do you bring it under control - a case in
your school?
Breakdown reading culture is an alarm bell to our
education. So we should note stay out of the effort to
eradicate it - we should get involve and be product of
our time.
In my school, student are bound from using or
carrying it to our premises. We encourage parent to
look at the age of their ward before allowing them to
have one.
To encourage reading culture, we involve student
vai passage reading and assignment in different
subjects.
From what we are saying and what we know,
how close are we to keep academic quality
flowing?
If the factors we have maintained at, are put in
place and stake holders in education come together,
academic quality will get to desired level.
Again, teachers are the principle force of
academic quality. What is going in your school?
Despite the odds I highlighted earlier, my teachers are
working hard – so, we are keeping our heads above
water in term of quality. They take the school like their
property, I am proud and glad about the output - our
student’s in higher institutions before and now have
never disappointed us - so, that is great!
Thank you, great to get your reflection
