CVCSA - M08.2 - FileSystem

The document outlines the settings and options for the file system agent, using a traffic light system to indicate the impact of each setting. It discusses the implications of enabling certain features, such as VSS snapshots and archiving options, and emphasizes the importance of proper configuration to avoid adverse effects on performance and data retention. Additionally, it addresses considerations for backup methods, including the use of block filter drivers and data readers, to optimize backup processes.

The following slides will go through all the options for the file system agent.

It will show
the default settings for each section. It will display the effects of using the setting be
using a “traffic light” system. Meaning, settings that can be enabled or used without
causing any adverse affects, or to increase performance will be highlights as green.
Settings the can be enabled which are ok to use, however could cause an adverse
effect, will be highlighted yellow. Settings which will cause an effect in the software,
especially if it can cause a potential issue will be highlighted in red.
These are the default settings for the FS properties page. Each one will be explained
and will describe the effect of using the option.
Note that once the file system is Enabled for Arching. The option to Enable Office
Communications backup is no longer available.
For the subclient name, it Can be changed at anytime and it will not affect anything
within the software…including restores.
When choosing the “Enable OnePass

VSS: if switching to “For all Files”, be aware that the way VSS works for all files is it will
try and wait until the client has a “quiet” period to try to take a VSS snapshot. This
means that the backup could take longer as the system is going to wait for a quiet
period to take the snapshot, so it could wait for a while, or eventually fail if it could not
get a quiet period to take the snapshot. Also for the VSS snapshot of all the files, it will
require enough free cache space for the snapshot itself on the volume where VSS is
configured.
The option to “Only backup files that qualify for archiving” is highlighted as yellow, as
there are certain conditions where not all data could be backed up. If only using this
option, without running backups without this option selected, only the files that meet
the archiving rules will get backed up. No other files will be protected.
When using this option, it is recommended to use a Second BackupSet. The first backup
set would be used for regular backups, the Second BackupSet would be used for
Archived data.
Note: With Exchange MB backup, you will NOT see this behavior and the option is not
even there. The reason for this is that the data for exchange is not recalled back to the
mailbox or the exchange server, it is recalled from the Webserver, and presented to the
user, but not recalled back.
Be aware that since CV creates its dedup hash signature after the data is
compressed, turning compression on and off will affect the Hash signature. This
in turn will make the subclient write a new baseline for deduplication. So it is
very important to select the proper compression option as to not cause a re-
baseline of data. It may be necessary to compression settings to test for
performance, however this should be done close to when the agent is installed
for testing, then left at the best setting and not change later.

***Question for Dev: Resource tuning. For Windows it can be from 1-4, the default is
2. the note says performance is not affected if the MA is optimized for concurrent LAN
backups. On the MA, this is the default setting, so does this mean if the setting is
increased from 2 to 4, there is absolutely no effect? If change to 4, will it still use 4
network agents, but just not affect performance. Also this setting directly affects the
“Throttle Network Bandwidth” option below. Does the Throttle option still follow the
number of agents set regardless of the optimized for LAN setting on the MA?

***Question for DEV: Application read Size: Since this can increase performance, do
we have any recommendations on what to set it to based on agent type (ie Windows
file system). Does changing this affect anything else? (ie restores, disklibrary block
size…etc)
The default settings on the SubClient retention tab forces the Synthetic Full backups to
run as they always have. Changing the settings change the behavior of how long data is
kept in the Synthetic full backups. If OnePass is Enabled, a new section appears called
“For Stubs deleted by a user” with the same options as “For files deleted by a user” will
appear.

Class Question: What is the retention of a file on a server, ie a word doc, that never gets
changed and never gets deleted…….Infinite…regardless of SP or subclient retention
settings.
The animation on this slide demonstrates how a traditional Synthetic Full backup works
and what files will be available after the synthetic full runs.

25
Notice here that with file deletion set for SP retention, nothing gets carried forward
into the synthetic full.

27
28
Note: When the files are deleted, they will be carried forward into the following
synthetic fulls for the number of days specified, then follow the SP retention.

Explain using IntelliSnap when using with a FileSystem.
BLB NOTE:
When using BLB, the backed up contents cannot be Content indexed. Also the 2
“catalog” options below cannot be used. Most important, Windows BLB in not Dedup
aware until SP4.
When enabling BLB there is an option to install a block filter driver. If the driver is not
installed, only Full backups can be done. If the block filter is installed, Fulls,
Incrementals and Synthetic Fulls can be performed. It is recommended to install the
driver. Also note, to install or update the driver, the server must be rebooted.
There is an option to create a file index. If not selected, an index of the backup will not
be done, this means that the backup will complete quicker, but a “find” cannot be done
on the browse operation. During a browse operation, a pseudo drive will be mounted
to the File system and files will be indexed on the fly or can be retrieved directly from
the mounted drive.
If the files are indexed, then the backup window will be increased, however “Find”
operations can be done on the data.
Number of Data readers, while this can increase performance, be careful when
increasing on multiple subclients that are protecting the same volume as to not
overload the backend disks.
If using only a single subclient, regardless of readers set, only 1 stream will be used as
the multiple readers option is not selected.
