Reflection

Description of the Event

As a recent graduate of Doctor of Physical Therapy program and working as a Teaching

Assistant at Rehman College of Rehabilitation Sciences I had a privilege of joining

CHPE course offered by the Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. On December 2,

2024, I attended a session conducted by Dr. Saiqa Saleem, focusing on Gibb’s

Reflective Cycle and Bloom’s Taxonomy. The session aimed to enhance our

understanding of reflective practice in health professions education. Dr. Saiqa initiated

the class at 2 PM, creating an engaging environment that encouraged active

participation. Throughout the session, we explored how Gibb’s Cycle can be used to

structure our reflections effectively and how Bloom's Taxonomy can guide our learning

objectives.

Dr. Saiqa began by introducing Gibb’s Cycle, which consists of six stages:

Description, Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusion, and Action Plan. We then

delved into Bloom’s Taxonomy, which categorizes cognitive skills and learning

objectives into different levels: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing,

Evaluating, and Creating. The session was interactive, with group discussions and

activities that allowed us to apply these frameworks to real-life scenarios in our

education and practice.

Evaluation and Analysis

The session was highly beneficial for several reasons. Firstly, Dr. Saiqa's

teaching style was effective; she encouraged open dialogue and made complex

concepts accessible. Her use of real-world examples helped to illustrate how Gibb’s

Cycle can be practically applied in our reflections. I found the interactive elements

particularly engaging, as they fostered collaboration among peers and enhanced our

understanding of reflective practices.

However, there were also challenges during the session. Some concepts,

particularly Bloom’s higher-order thinking skills, were difficult to grasp initially. For

instance, distinguishing between the levels of Analysis, Evaluation, and Creating

required deeper contemplation. I realized that while I had a basic understanding of

these terms, applying them to educational contexts was more complex.

From this experience, I gained valuable insights into the significance of

structured reflection. Both Gibb’s Cycle and Bloom’s Taxonomy provide frameworks that

can enhance our learning and professional development. Gibb’s Cycle encourages us

to think critically about our experiences, while Bloom’s Taxonomy helps us articulate our

learning objectives and assess our cognitive processes.

Conclusion and Action Plan

Reflecting on this session, I recognize several areas for improvement in my own

practice. Firstly, I plan to incorporate Gibb’s Cycle into my regular reflections. By

systematically addressing each stage, I can gain a deeper understanding of my

experiences and identify specific areas for growth. Additionally, I intend to utilize

Bloom’s Taxonomy when setting learning objectives for my studies and professional

development. This approach will ensure that I engage with material at various cognitive

levels, promoting a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

If I encounter similar challenges in the future, such as difficulty in applying higher-

order thinking skills, I will seek additional resources. This may include engaging with

literature on Bloom's Taxonomy or participating in workshops that focus on developing

critical thinking skills. I believe that continuous learning and adaptation are essential for

growth in the health professions.

Furthermore, I aim to collaborate with peers to facilitate discussions that reinforce

our understanding of these frameworks. Sharing experiences and insights can enhance

our learning process and enable us to support one another in our professional journeys.

In conclusion, the session on Gibb’s Cycle and Bloom’s Taxonomy was

enlightening and transformative. It equipped me with tools to reflect more effectively on

my experiences and to structure my learning objectives in a meaningful way. I am

committed to integrating these frameworks into my practice, which will ultimately
