High style is always in fashion.

The Bal Harbour Shops was forward-thinking enough to open

in 1965, a time when innovative, open-air luxury malls in Miami
had to think—and act—like pioneers. Built on the site of a
former WWII army barracks, the one-story Bal Harbour Shops
opened with
30 upscale retail stores, including a Martha Phillips boutique,
FAO Schwarz, Abercrombie & Fitch and Schrafft’s. In that
era, enormous air-conditioned malls were the
norm; the intimate Bal Harbour Shops was
open-air and lushly landscaped, a green-
conscious mall that is still ahead of its time.
The seminal fountainhead of this
particular vision has always been Stanley
Whitman, who bucked the prevailing trends
of the era and created an enduring retail
miracle. “When you dance with the crowd,
you only get what’s left behind at the table,”
Whitman once said.
The Shops’ success was ensured when
another legend of retail, Neiman Marcus,
opened its first specialty department store
outside of Dallas. Drawn to that store’s success,
Saks Fifth Avenue joined the Bal Harbour Shops
in 1976. In 1982, a second floor was added, and
steadily, a slew of chic retailers from Europe
opened up there, including Gucci, which
selected Bal Harbour for its first mall
location.

Dolce & Gabbana, Roger Vivier, Cartier, Bulgari, Louis Vuitton and Prada all
picked Bal Harbour for their first outposts outside of New York, and in 2009,
Lanvin opened its first United States operation at the Shops. Over time, Van
Cleef & Arpels, Chanel, Valentino, Fendi, Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Breguet, CH
Carolina Herrera, La Perla and Stella McCartney joined the mix. Moncler,
Canali and Alexander McQueen are on the horizon. Now home to more than 100
fashion and jewelry shops, the forever elegant Bal Harbour Shops boasts
the highest concentration of luxury jewelry and watch boutiques in the
country. (Officine Panerai just opened during Art Basel Miami Beach in
December.)
According to Women’s Wear Daily, the Bal Harbour Shops is the most
productive shopping complex in the United States, based on average sales per
square foot. In 2011, it had its best year, with annual average sales of $2,326 per
square foot, the highest in the nation. Bal

latter says he likes the “open communication” of being in a family business and is
working on plans for a 200,000-square-foot addition
to the Bal Harbour Shops that will boast an upscale
movie theater and an array of smaller, younger,
more forward-thinking boutiques from Europe.
“We’re running out of elbow room, and we
need more space. The Bal Harbour Shops is what
the market wants. And the shops in the expansion
area give us a chance to appeal to the next
generation of Neiman Marcus
customers—not only their
daughters, but their granddaughters too.”
For Stanley Whitman, who still reports to work
every day, it’s just a simple matter of staying
the course. “For us, it’s never been today or
tomorrow. It’s about 10 years from tomorrow, the
future.”

cultured A Cultural Renaissance in Bal Harbour

Spearheading Bal Harbour’s cultural initiative is Bal Harbour Art Nights, held regularly at the Bal Harbour Shops, which
is dedicated to celebrating the arts—from the convergence of fashion and art to the burgeoning local scene. Each Art
Night, the Bal Harbour Shops are transformed into a cultural hotbed of activity with salon-style talks, performance
pieces, guest appearances and site-specific art installations. Art Chats—another regular Bal Harbour series—was
created to provide visionaries a platform to deliver their insights about the art world. It launched last year with guest

of many local talents, including Teresita Fernandez

Books & Books

Founded by Mitchell Kaplan in Coral Gables, Books & Books is a beloved, locally owned,
independent bookstore chain. Kaplan, who is also the co-founder of the Miami Book Fair
International, opened the 2,000-square-foot shop at Bal Harbour in 2005, and since then, the store
has hosted countless readings and author appearances. In Bal Harbour, all worlds intersect, and
nothing speaks to that notion more clearly than the variety of authors who have held book signings
at Books & Books. Among them are Hillary Duff, Tori Spelling, Bethenny Frankel, Jackie Collins,
Tyra Banks, Perez Hilton, Dave Barry, Padma Lakshmi and Michael Wex. Other Books & Books
locations include Lincoln Road in South Beach, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Miami
International Airport, Westhampton Beach, New York and Grand Cayman Island.

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort

CheCking in
Bal Harbour enters a new era of luxurious
accommodations.

Just as Bal Harbour’s fashion scene has reached unparalleled heights, so too have the hotel offerings within this
tiny slice of paradise.
Consider it the rebirth of a destination long famous for its luxuries—both natural and manmade. Bal Harbour has
always been home to the glitterati and was once the stomping ground for Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, as well as
Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. And in the current era, Bal Harbour hotels—from the St. Regis Bal Harbour
Resort to ONE Bal Harbour Resort & Spa—continue to attract the illustrious.
This year the St. Regis, designed by Yabu Pushelberg, debuted with 243 plush rooms, the exclusive Remède Spa,
J&G Grill and white-glove service from the iconic St. Regis Butlers. Occupying the site of the former Americana Hotel,

Grande Dame of Bal Harbour.
Last year, Quarzo, a new chic boutique hotel, opened its doors to offer personalized services, 29 apartment-size
suites and its trademark meditation garden. Plans for expansion over the next two years are in the works, with nearly
60 new rooms slated to open in 2012 and an additional 40-plus rooms in 2013.
For those who like their accommodations with a touch of nostalgia, the Sea View hotel is there to meet that
demand. While the hotel completely renovated its rooms last year, there’s still plenty of Florida charm. A favorite
amongst multi-generational families, the Sea View’s expansive pool deck boasts Key West-style cabanas, while the
poolside coffee shop continues to serve the hotel’s legendary chocolate milkshakes and tuna melts.
ONE Bal Harbour Resort & Spa opened in 2009 on a stretch of beachfront property nestled between the ocean
and bay. Each one of the hotel’s 124 rooms has an ocean view, spacious balconies and access to the hotel’s lavish
10,000-square-foot spa. And speaking of space, guests will be delighted to find that they share a floor with only one
other neighbor. ONE Bal Harbour also boasts a $4 million art collection, a top-notch restaurant, Mister Collins, and a
Pawcierge service for pets.
