WP-001 Exposed Steel

This document outlines the work procedure for extending re-bars in piles by welding for exposed steel at Bahrain Marina Development Phase 1. It includes calculations for the weld length required for different sizes of re-bars, specifically T-16, T-20, and T-25, along with references to relevant standards. Additionally, it notes that a 500mm extension requirement for 20mm diameter reinforcement is not applicable due to the capping beam depth.

Extension of Steel Re-bars in piles - Calculation

The steel bars are less than fifty times the diameter of bar around the pile cut-off level.
The re-bars of the piles will be welded using ordinary welding electrodes.
The length of the weld to be calculated as follows;
𝜋 0.87 𝑓𝑦 d
L
4 T fw

Where fy = specified characteristic strength of the bar = 460 N/mm2

fw = weld metal shear stress = 160 N/mm2

T = Effective Throat thickness = w/2 where 'w' is the size of weld (in 'mm')

(conservative sides as per BS code)

T = 8/2 = 4 mm (w= weld size = 8.0mm)

1. For rebar of T-16

𝜋 0.87 460 16 16
L
4 160 4.00

= 125.7mm Say = 130 mm

2. For rebar of T-20

𝜋 0.87 460 20 20
L
4 160 4.00

= 196.4mm Say = 200 mm

3. For rebar of T-25

𝜋 0.87 460 25 25
L
4 160 5.00

= 245.5mm Say = 250 mm

A sketch showing the above is enclosed here with.

PILING WORKS FOR BAHRAIN MARINA (PHASE 1)

The 500mm extension requirement for welding

connection for 20mm diameter reinforcement is not
applicable at site since the capping beam depth is
only 500mm in size. All rectification works for rebar
extension shall be made with HILTI RE 500 as
internally agreed between NASS QC and MSCEB.
