Week 1: From [13 January 2025] to [ 20 January 2025]

1 Summary of activities.

Activity 1: Orientation

Throughout the orientation, the student underwent comprehensive education on the distinct
needs of psychiatric patients, as well as the standardized procedures governing their
treatment. Furthermore, she gained insight into her multifaceted role as a social worker
within the institution, whose primary responsibilities encompass facilitating patient’s
admissions, implementing therapeutic interventions, and coordinating discharges, thereby
ensuring a seamless continuum of care. The orientation experience was significant as it
empowered the student to develop a nuanced understanding of psychiatric patient care,
enabling her to provide holistic, patient centred care and navigate complex treatment
protocols effectively.

Activity 2: Induction counselling

The student conducted induction counselling sessions with new patients, facilitating a smooth
transition into the psychiatric setting. This experience was significant as it allowed the
student to establish therapeutic relationships, assess patient needs, foster trust and rapport and
promote patient engagement and adherence to treatment. ( Katz et al., 2004)

Activity 3: Social affidavit

The student learned how to draft a social affidavit for civil patients which is a crucial
document providing the patients collateral history. Its significance lies in informing treatment
plans and discharge planning ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.

2 Lessons learned

Lesson 1: The student learned role induction techniques, drafting social affidavits and
gathering collateral history. These skills can be applied to enhance patient-centered care,
inform treatment plans, and foster strong therapeutic relationships.
Lesson 2: The student learnt about multidisciplinary team collaboration. Going forward, this
skill can be applied to enhance communication among healthcare professionals and to
improve treatment outcomes through collaborative decision making.
