Statement of the Research Gap:

According to the researchers, the majority of the related studies’ results show that first language is much more effective
in solving mathematical word problems. On the other hand, a comprehensive review of related studies reveals that the
English language (second language) is not preferably used by students as a medium of instruction in solving
mathematical word problem at that time. Thus, knowing that we are in the 21 st century, where students are highly
exposed to technology, it influences their second language acquisition development. Hence, in order to fill this gap, the
main purpose of the study is to examine if students still prefer first language acquisition for understanding mathematical
context at present.
